Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables. Unappr oved chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the device.
Getting star ted 11 Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty . • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery .
Getting star ted 12 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 13 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Close the cov er of the memor y card slot. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 14 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → General → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 15 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
16 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 17 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 18 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options. Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position.
Basics 19 Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part. Double -tap again to return. F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts.
Basics 20 Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Pinch to zoom out . C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device.
Basics 21 T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion . • Some applications do not allow screen r otation. • Some applications display a diff erent scr een depending on the or ientation.
Basics 22 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 23 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . Samsung Smar t P ause Use this f eature t o pause videos when you look aw ay from the scr een. On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Smar t screen , and then tick Smar t pause .
Basics 24 U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w tray can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 25 Launching applications in a split scr een Multi W indow 1 Drag your finger fr om the r ight edge of the scr een towar ds the middle of the screen. Alternativ ely , tap and hold . The Multi Windo w tray appears at the right side of the screen.
Basics 26 3 T ap and hold another application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to a new location. Y ou can launch the same application in a split screen at the same time. Only applications with next to its icon suppor t this fea ture .

Basics 30 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. The Home screen has tw o differ ent kinds of panels. The Classic home screen panel displa ys shor tcuts to applications and widgets , and the Content home scr een panel displays Cont ent widgets.

Basics 35 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap to open the Applications scr een. T o view other panels , scroll left or right. Rearranging applica tions This f eature is a vailable only in the customisable grid view .
Basics 36 Disabling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to disable it. T o enable the application, on the Applica tions screen, tap Settings → General → Application manager , scroll to DISABLED , select the application, and then tap Enable .
Basics 37 Help Ac cess help information t o lear n how to use the devic e and applications or configure impor tant settings. T ap Help on the Applications screen. Select a category to view tips. T o sort categories by an alphabetical order , tap . T o sear ch for keywor ds, tap .
Basics 38 Entering upper case T ap Shift befor e entering a charac ter . F or all caps, tap Caps lock . Changing the ke yboard type T ap and hold , and then tap to change the keyboard type . On the floating keyboard , tap and hold and move the floa ting keyboard to another location.
Basics 39 Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone . The device display s what you speak. If the device does not recog nise your wor ds correctly , tap the underlined tex t and select an alternative w ord or phrase from the dr opdown list.
Basics 40 Joining Wi - Fi net works On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Wi - Fi , and then drag the Wi - Fi switch to the right. Selec t a network from the list of det ected Wi-F i net works , enter a password if nec essar y , and then tap Connect .
Basics 41 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play St ore , requir e a Google account, and Samsung Apps requir es a Samsung account. C reate Google and Samsung acc ounts to ha ve the best experience with the device .
Basics 42 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 43 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 44 Setting a PIN On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → PIN . Enter at least f our numbers, and then enter the passw ord again to v er ify it. 46 C ommunication C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information.
Communication 47 Searching f or con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the left side of the contacts list for quick scr olling, by dragging a finger along it.
Communication 48 Impor ting and expor ting contacts T ap Con tacts . Impor ting contacts T ap → Settings → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an impor t option. Expor ting contacts T ap → Settings → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an expor t option.

Communication 50 Business card T ap Con tacts . Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap S ave . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card, and then tap to edit.
Communication 51 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 52 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 53 Reading messages Delete the message. Mark the message as a reminder . Acc ess additional options. Keep the message for long-term storage . Reply to the message. F or ward the message to others. Reply to all recipients or print the message.
Communication 54 Hangouts Use this application to cha t with others. T ap Hangouts on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . Selec t a friend from the friends list or enter da ta to search and select a friend from the r esults to star t chatting .
Communication 55 Photos Use this application to view and shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vices. T ap Photos on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
56 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 57 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .
W eb & network 58 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , tap → S ave . T o open a bookmarked webpage, tap → Book marks , and then select one. Searching the w eb by voic e T ap , speak a key wor d, and then select one of the suggested keywords that appear .
W eb & network 59 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
W eb & network 60 e -Meeting Use this application to host or a ttend an e -meeting. Y ou can share files with attendees during a meeting. T o use this application, all devic es to be used in the meeting must be connected to the same access point .
W eb & network 61 3 Check the network information to shar e with others, set details for the meeting , and then tap Done . T o add files to the meeting , tap . Use a passwor d. Check the network information to shar e with others. Meeting information Set a password and the security level f or the meeting.
W eb & network 62 4 A meeting session is creat ed. The file added when the meeting session is crea ted appears on the screen, or if no file is added, the whiteboar d appears on the screen.

Media 87 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Play er → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 88 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. ( p. 95 ) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 89 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 90 • Rich tone (HDR) : Use this to take a phot o with an improv ed contrast ratio . • Eraser : Use this to erase the mo vements of moving objects in the background . T ap to take a series of photos . The device er ases traces of mov ement from a moving object.
Media 91 Applying filter eff ec ts Use the filter eff ec ts to take unique photos or videos . T ap and select a filter effect. The available options v ar y by mode . T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap t o take a video . T o pause r ecording, tap . T o stop r ecording , tap .
Media 92 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 93 Share shot T ap → , and then select one of the following: • Share shot : Send a photo directly to another device via Wi-F i Direct. • Buddy photo share : Set the device to rec ognise a person ’ s face that you ha ve tagged in a photo and send it to that person.
Media 94 • V ideo stabilisation : Activate or deactivate an ti-shake. Anti-shake helps f ocus when the camera is moving . • Location tag : Attach a GPS location tag t o the photo .

Media 96 Pla ying videos Video files sho w the icon on the preview . S elect a video to watch it and tap . T rimming segmen ts of a video Selec t a video and tap . Move the start bracket to the desired starting point, move the end bracket to the desir ed ending point, and then sav e the video.
Media 97 Modifying images When viewing an image, tap and use the following functions: • Rot ate : Rotate the image . • Crop : Crop the image . • Colour : Adjust the satur ation or brightness of the image. • Effect : Apply effects to the image .
Media 98 Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images, and then tap to send them to others or share them via social network ser vices . • When viewing an image, tap to send it to others or share it via social network ser vices .

Utilities 107 Syncing with Google C alendar On the Applications screen, tap Settings → General → Ac counts → Google under My acc ounts , select the G oogle acc ount, and then tick Sync C alendar . T o manually sync f or updating, on the Applications scr een, tap S Planner → → Sync .
