Getting star ted 9 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 11 Charg ing with the charger Connect the USB cable to the USB pow er adaptor and then plug the end of the USB cable into the multipurpose jack . Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty .
Getting star ted 12 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket.
Getting star ted 13 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 14 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 15 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 16 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
17 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 18 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 19 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 20 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 21 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motion , and then drag the switch at the t op right of the screen to the right.
Basics 22 Sw eeping Sw eep your hand across the scr een to capture a screenshot. The image is sav ed in Galler y → Screenshots . It is not possible to capture a screenshot while using some applications . C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback .
Basics 23 U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w tray can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 24 2 T ap and hold an application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to the scr een. Release the application icon when the screen turns blue . 3 T ap and hold another application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 25 Sharing con tent betw een applications Y ou can easily share content between applica tions, such as Email and Internet , by dragg ing and dropping them. Some applications may not suppor t this f eature . 1 Launch Email and Internet in a split screen Multi W indow .
Basics 26 3 T ap and hold an item in the Internet window and drag it t o a location in the Email window . Crea ting a Multi Windo w combination Use this f eature t o save curr ently-running Multi W indow applications as a combina tion. 1 Launch multiple applications in a split screen Multi Window .
Basics 27 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report new messages, calendar events , device status, and more . Drag down from the status bar t o open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 28 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 29 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen.
Basics 30 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 31 Rearranging panels Moving a panel Scroll left or right on the widgets panel area, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Basics 33 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it . Some applications are gr ouped into folders .
Basics 34 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 35 Handwriting T ap and hold → , and then write a wor d with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered. Select a suggested wor d. Use handwriting gestures t o per form actions, such as editing or deleting characters and inser ting spaces.
Basics 36 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 99) Ensure that the Wi-F i connection is ac tive bef ore using Internet applications . T urning W i-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap Wi - Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 37 F orgetting W i-Fi net w orks Any network that has ev er been used, including the current network, can be forgott en so the device will not automatically c onnec t to it.
Basics 38 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices .
Basics 39 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 40 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 41 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
42 C ommunication C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter con tact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 43 Searching f or con tac ts Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the left side of the contacts list for quick scr olling, by dragging a finger along it. • T ap the search field at the t op of the contac ts list and enter sear ch cr iteria.
Communication 44 Impor ting and expor ting contacts Impor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an impor t option. Expor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an expor t option. Sharing con tac ts T ap → Share namecar d via → Multiple contacts , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.
Communication 45 Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Edit group : Change the group settings . • Create : Make a new group . • Remov e from gr oup : Remove members fr om the group .
Communication 46 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 47 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 48 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap SEND . T ap +C C/BCC to add more r ecipients. T ap → Attach file to attach images , videos, music , and others. T ap → Discard to star t ov er .
Communication 49 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. Selec t a label in ALL LABELS to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap → Change labels , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 50 Photos Use this application to view and shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vices. T ap Photos on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
51 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 52 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 53 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 54 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
W eb & network 55 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y content sav ed on remotely-located devic es or web stor age ser vices ov er the I nternet. Y ou can play and send multimedia files on y our device to another device or web st orage ser vice.
W eb & network 56 Managing con tents on a w eb storage service Selec t a web st orage ser vice , and then view and manage your files. T o transf er files bet ween y our device and a web storage service, tap , select files, and then tap .
W eb & network 57 Crea ting a group f or Group Pla y When you cr eate a Group Pla y session, other devices can join the session and share the content . When you use a passw ord for a Gr oup Play session, other devices must en ter the passwor d to join the session.
W eb & network 58 W a tchON Use this application to c onnec t to a T V to watch your fa vourite shows and movies . T ap W atchON on the Applications screen.
59 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. Pla ying music Selec t a music category , and then selec t a song to play . T ap the album image at the bottom of the scr een to open the music player scr een.
Media 60 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Adv anced → Smar t volume . When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 61 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 66) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 62 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 63 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap to take a video . T o pause recor ding, tap . T o stop r ecording, tap . Recor ding mode T ap → to change the rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for email : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via email .
Media 64 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 65 C onfiguring settings for Camer a T ap → to c onfigure settings f or Camera. Not all of the f ollowing options are available in both still camera and video camera modes . The av ailable options var y depending on the mode used. • Photo size / V ideo size : Selec t a resolution.
Media 66 • Exposure value : Change the exposure value . This determines how much light the camera ’ s sensor r eceives . F or low-light situations , use a higher exposure. • Guidelines : Display viewfinder guides to help c omposition when selecting subjec ts.
Media 67 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods to z oom in an image: • Double -tap anywhere to zoom in. • Spread two fingers apart on any place to z oom in. Pinch t o zoom out, or double -tap to return. Pla ying videos Video files sho w the icon on the preview .
Media 68 • Rotate right : Rotate clockwise. • Crop : Resize the blue frame to cr op and save the image in it. • Set as : Set the image as a wallpaper or a contact image. • Details : View image details . • Settings : Change the Galler y settings.
Media 69 Setting as wallpaper When viewing an image, tap → Set as to set the image as wallpaper or to assig n it to a contact. T agging fac es T ap → Settings → T ags , and then tick F ace tag . A yellow fr ame appears around the recog nised face on an image.
Media 70 St or y Album Use this application to cr eate your own dig ital album to keep your st ories by organising the images neatly and automatically . T ap Story Album on the Applications screen. Crea ting stor y albums Creat e stor y albums by selecting images from Galler y or images sor ted by tag inf ormation.
Media 71 Crea ting albums by tag information Creat e albums by sor ting photos by tag information, such as the loca tion where an image was taken, subjects, or time. T ap By tag information , and then set the follo wing tag options: • Location : Specify a location.
Media 72 • Share via : Send the album to others. • Print : Print the album b y connec ting the device to a print er . Some pr inters ma y not be compatible with the device . • Order photo book : Place an or der for a print ed album. • Expor t Album : Expor t the album to other storage loca tions.
Media 73 Crea ting albums with recommended phot os When you take multiple phot os in a location, the device suggests cr eating a new album based on the location. This featur e helps you crea te photo albums c onv eniently when you hav e daily events or tra vel.
Media 74 P aper Ar tist Use this application to make images look like illustr ations with fun effects or frames . T ap P aper Ar tist on the Applications screen. Use ar tistic tools t o edit an image. The edited image is sav ed in the Galler y → P aper Pictures folder .
Media 75 V ideo Use this application to pla y video files. T ap V ideo on the Applications screen. A void locking the device ’ s screen while playing a DivX Video- On-Demand. Each time you lock the scr een while playing a DivX V ideo- On-Demand, one of your a vailable rental c ounts is lost.
Media 76 Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select a sharing method, selec t videos, and then tap Done . Using P opup V ideo play er Use this f eature t o use other applications without closing the video play er . While watching videos, tap to use the pop-up player .
Media 77 F lipboard Use this application to ac cess your personalised magazines. T ap Flipboar d on the Applications screen. T o start your Flipboar d, flick left on the greeting page, select news topics , and then tap Build Y our Flipboar d .

83 Utilities Memo Use this application to r ecord impor tant inf ormation to sav e and view at a later date . T ap Memo on the Applications screen. C omposing memos T ap , enter a memo , and then tap S ave . T o change the backgr ound colour , tap → Colour .
Utilities 84 T o import memos from Google Docs, tap → Impor t . T o export memos to other storage locations , tap → Expor t . T o change the memo settings , tap → Settings . V iewing a memo T ap the memo thumbnail to open it. Scroll left or right to see mor e memos.
Utilities 85 T o add an ev ent or task more briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.
Utilities 86 A ttaching memos to a date T ap and hold a date t o select it and the memo pad appears. Syncing with Google C alendar On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Google under Ac counts , select the G oogle account , and then tick Sync C alendar .

Utilities 92 Setting alarms T ap , set a time for the alarm t o go off , selec t days f or the alarm to repeat, and then tap S ave . • Location alarm : Set a location. The alarm goes off only when you ar e in the location. • Snooze : Set an inter val and the number of times f or the alarm to repeat after the pr eset time.
Utilities 93 Calcula tor Use this application f or simple or complex calculations. T ap Calculat or on the Applications screen. Rotate the device t o landscape orientation to display the scien tific calculator . If Screen rotation is disabled, tap → Scientific calculator .

99 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 100 W i-F i D irect Wi-F i Direct connects two devices directly via a Wi-F i network without requiring an access point. On the Settings screen, tap Wi - Fi → W i-Fi Direct . Bluetooth Activate the Bluet ooth featur e to exchange inf or mation ov er shor t distances.
Settings 101 More settings Cust omise settings to contr ol connec tions with other devices or networks. F light mode This disables all wireless functions on your devic e. Y ou can use only non-network services. Prin ting Configur e settings for print er plug-ins installed on the device.
Settings 102 Block ing mode Selec t which notifications will be blocked and how long t o block them. Hands-free mode Set the device to read c ontents aloud and specify applications to use in hands-free mode . Sound Change settings for various sounds on the devic e.

Settings 105 Bat ter y View the amoun t of battery power consumed by y our device. Applica tion manager View and manage the applica tions on your device . Default applications Selec t a default setting f or using applications. • Home : Selec t a default Home screen mode .
Settings 106 L ock screen Change settings for the locked scr een. • Screen lock : Activate the scr een lock feature . The following options ma y var y depending on the screen lock f eature selected. • Multiple widgets : Set the device to allow use of widgets on the locked scr een.
Settings 107 Securit y Change settings for securing the device . • Encr ypt device : Set a password t o encr ypt data sav ed on the device. Y ou must enter the passwor d each time you turn on the device . Charge the batt er y befor e enabling this setting because it may take more than an hour to encr ypt your da ta.
Settings 108 Language and input Change the settings for t ext input. Some options may not be available depending on the selected language. Language Selec t a display language f or all menus and applications. Default Selec t a default keyboard type f or text input.
