Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables. Unappr oved chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the device.
Getting star ted 11 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket.
Getting star ted 12 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 32 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 13 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 14 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 15 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
16 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 17 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion. • Do not allow the touch scr een to contact water .
Basics 18 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 19 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 20 Rotating the scr een Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation. Rotating the device causes the display t o automatically adjust to fit the new scr een or ientation. T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion .
Basics 21 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report new messages, calendar events , device status, and more . Drag down from the status bar t o open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 22 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 23 Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen. When the rubbish bin turns red, release the it em. Basics 24 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 25 Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance . Pr ess and hold the Home button, tap , and then tap End next to an application to close it. T o close all running applications , tap End all .
Basics 26 Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall , and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled . Sharing applications Share downloaded applica tions with other users via email, Bluetooth, or other methods .
Basics 27 Using the Samsung ke yboard Break to the next line. Delete a preceding char acter . Enter numerals and punctuation marks. Enter uppercase . Set options for the Samsung keyboard. Enter a space . Enter uppercase . Add an item fr om the clipboard.

Basics 32 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.

Communication 35 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • : Compose an email . Communication 37 Business card Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card in ME , and then tap to edit.
Communication 38 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done . The device will send the message a t the specified time and date .
Communication 39 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. Communication 40 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 41 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete the chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.
Communication 42 ChatON Use this application to cha t with any devic e. T o use this application, you must sig n in to your Samsung account. T ap ChatON on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
43 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 44 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 45 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 46 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
W eb & network 47 Pla ying files on a remot e device Selec t a device or w eb storage , selec t a file, tap , and then select a device. • Suppor ted file f ormats may diff er depending on connected devices as a media play er . • Some files may be buffer ed while playing depending on the network connection.

Media 49 Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap → Crea te playlist . Enter a title and tap OK . Selec t songs to include , and then tap Done . T o add the curren tly-playing song to a pla ylist, tap → Add t o playlist . Pla ying music by mood Play music g rouped by mood .
Media 50 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap to take a photo . Indicates which storage is in use . Switch between still and video mode. Open the image viewer to displa y photos. Switch between the front and r ear camera. Change the shooting mode. Use this for delayed-time shots .
