Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Remove the back c over . Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er .
Getting star ted 11 • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card. • Use caution not to lose or let others use the SIM or USIM car d.

Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.

Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → General → Stor age → Unmount SD card .
Getting star ted 17 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → General → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .

Getting star ted 19 S witching to silent mode Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Pr ess and hold the Volume butt on down until it switches to silent mode . • Pr ess and hold the Po wer button, and then tap Mute or Vibrate . • Open the notifications panel at the top of the scr een, and then tap Sound or Vibrate .

Basics 22 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options.
Basics 23 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Con trols → Motions , and then drag the Motions switch to the right.
Basics 26 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call.
Basics 27 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone or pause media playback, or mute the FM r adio (when using the speaker). P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .

A c tiva ting Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w panel can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 29 Drag the circle between the applica tion windows up or do wn to adjust the size of the windows . T ap the panel handle to open or close the panel . When the Multi Window panel is open, tap and hold the panel handle and drag it to the left or right edge of the screen to mo ve the panel.
Basics 30 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 31 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 32 Moving an item T ap and hold an item and drag it t o a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen.
Basics 33 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 34 L ocked scr een The locked screen pr events the device fr om unwan ted operation when not in use and also allows y ou to add conv enient widgets. A dding widgets T o use widgets when the scr een is locked, on the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Device → Lock scr een , and then tick Multiple widgets .
Basics 35 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap Apps to open the Applications scr een. T o view other panels , scroll left or right. Rearranging applica tions This f eature is a vailable only in the customisable grid view .
Basics 36 Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled . Disabling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to disable it.
Basics 37 Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance . Pr ess and hold the Home button, tap , and then tap End next to an application to close it. T o close all running applications , tap End all .
Basics 38 Using the Samsung ke yboard Changing the ke yboard la yout T ap , select a language, and then tap Qwer ty keyboard or 3x4 keyboar d . The keyboard la yout may not be changed in some languages. Break to the next line. Delete a preceding char acter .
Basics 39 Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a word with a finger . Suggested w ords appear as characters are ent ered. Select a suggested wor d. Basics 40 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 109) T urning W i-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap Wi - Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 41 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play St ore , requir e a Google account, and Samsung Apps requir es a Samsung account. C reate Google and Samsung acc ounts to ha ve the best experience with the device .
Basics 42 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 43 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 44 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 45 Setting a passwor d On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P asswor d . Enter at least f our charac ters including numbers and symbols , and then enter the passw ord again to verify it.
Basics 46 Upgr ading ov er the air The device can be dir ec tly upgraded to the lat est sof tware by the firmw are ov er-the -air (FO T A) service. On the Applications screen, tap Settings → General → About device → Sof tware upda te → Update no w .
47 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 48 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 49 • → Manage confer ence call : Hav e a private con versation with one par ty during a multipar ty call or disconnect one par t y form the multipart y call. • → Con tacts : Open the contacts list. • → Memo : Creat e a memo.
Communication 50 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold . Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle.
Communication 51 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap . During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 52 T ap and hold the other par ty ’ s image to access the f ollowing options: • Captur e image : Capture the other party ’ s image . • Record video : T ake a video of the other par ty ’ s images. It is illegal in many countries to r ecord a call without the other part y ’ s prior permission.
Communication 53 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter con tact information.
Communication 54 Searching f or con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the right side of the c ontacts list for quick scrolling , by dragging a finger along it.
Communication 55 Moving con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Moving con tac ts to Google T ap → Merge acc ounts → Merge with Google . Contacts mov ed to Google Contacts appear with in the contacts list. Moving con tac ts to Samsung T ap → Merge acc ounts → Merge with Samsung .
Communication 56 F av ourite con tac ts T ap F av ourites . T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Add t o fav ourites : Add c ontacts to favourites . • Remov e from fav ourites : Remove c ontacts from favourit es.
Communication 57 Business card T ap Con tacts . Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap S ave . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card, and then tap to edit.
Communication 58 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduling . Set a time and date, and then tap Done . The device will send the message at the specified time and da te . • If the device is turned off at the scheduled time, is not connected to the network, or the network is unstable, the message will not be sent.
Communication 59 Sending messages T ap the email accoun t to use, and then tap at the bottom of the scr een. Enter recipients , subject, and message, and then tap . T ap to add a recipien t from the con tacts list. T ap to attach images , videos, con tacts, memos, ev ents, and others .
Communication 60 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 61 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 62 Reading messages Mark the message as unread. Pr eview attachment. Keep the message for long-term storage . Mark the message as a reminder . Delete the message. Reply to the message. Reply to all recipients or f or ward the message to others.
Communication 63 Hangouts Use this application to cha t with others. T ap Hangouts on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . Selec t a friend from the friends list or enter da ta to search and select a friend from the r esults to star t chatting .
Communication 64 Photos Use this application to view and shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vices. T ap Photos on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
65 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to acc ess additional options while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 66 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , tap → Add bookmark . T o open a bookmarked webpage, tap , and then select one. Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history .
W eb & network 67 Chr ome Use this application to sear ch for information and br owse webpages . T ap Chrome on the Applications screen. W eb & network 68 Bluetooth Bluetooth crea tes a direct wireless c onnection bet ween two devices o ver shor t distances. W eb & network 69 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y contents sav ed on remotely-located devic es or web stor age ser vices ov er the I nternet. Y ou can play and send multimedia files on y our device to another device or web st orage ser vice.
W eb & network 70 Managing con tents on a w eb storage service Selec t a web st orage ser vice , and then view and manage your files. T o transf er files bet ween y our device and a web storage service, tap , select files, and then tap .
W eb & network 71 Crea ting a group f or Group Pla y When you cr eate a Group Pla y session, other devices can join the session and share the content . When you use a passw ord for a Gr oup Play session, other devices must en ter the passwor d to join the session.
W eb & network 72 • : Write a not e or draw on the scr een. All par ticipants can see what you crea te. • : View all shar ed images in mosaic layout. This featur e is available when y ou selected more than two images . • / : Selec t more images or documen ts.
W eb & network 73 Sending data via Andr oid Beam Use the Andr oid Beam featur e to send data, such as w ebpages and contacts, to NFC-enabled devices. On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → NFC . Drag the Android Beam switch to the right.

Media 75 T o set a personalised sound while listening t o songs with a headset, tap → Settings → Adapt Sound → On . When you turn the v olume up to level 14 or higher , the adapt sound option is not applied to music playback. If you turn the volume down t o level 13 or low er , the option is reapplied .
Media 76 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 82) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 77 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 78 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap MODE → P anorama . T ap and move the camer a in one direc tion. When two panorama guide frames ar e aligned, the camer a automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 79 Recor ding mode T ap → to change the rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer the r ecording quality for sending via messages . Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .
Media 80 Share shot T ap → , and then selec t one of the follo wing: • Share shot : Send a photo directly to another device via Wi-F i Direct or NFC. • Buddy photo share : Set the device to rec ognise a person ’ s face that you ha ve tagged in a photo and send it to that person.
Media 81 • Location tag : Attach a GPS location tag t o the photo . Activate this fea ture when taking photos to cr eate albums in Story Album . • T o impr ove GPS sig nals, avoid shooting in locations wher e the signal may be obstructed, such as between buildings or in low-lying ar eas, or in poor weather conditions.
Media 82 Galler y Use this application to view images and videos . T ap Galler y on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 83 Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the f ollowing func tions: • F av ourite : Add t o the favourites list . • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow with the images in the curren t folder . • Photo fr ame : Use this to add a frame and a not e to an image.
Media 84 F av ourite images When viewing an image, tap → F av ourite to add the image to the fa vourites list. Deleting images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images, and then tap . • When viewing an image, tap .
Media 85 Using T ag Buddy T ap → Settings → T ag buddy , and then drag the T ag buddy switch to the right t o display a con textual tag (weather , location, date , and person ’ s name) when opening an image . Organising with f olders Creat e a folder to organise images or videos stor ed in the device.

Media 89 Scanning radio stations T ap → Scan , and then select a scan option. The FM r adio scans and saves a vailable stations automatically . Selec t the radio station y ou want from the stations list and tap to return t o the FM r adio screen.

Utilities 94 When jotting down a memo , tap once more to change the pen type, line thickness, or pen colour . When erasing the handwritten memo , tap , and then tap to change the er aser size or tap Clear all to clear the memo . View mor e colours. Change the line thickness.

Utilities 98 Dropbo x Use this application to sa ve and share files with others via the Dropbo x cloud storage. When you sa ve files to Dr opbox, your device aut omatically syncs with the web server and any other computers that ha ve Dropbo x installed.
Utilities 99 Cloud Use this f eature t o sync files or back up application data with your Samsung ac count or Dropbo x. On the Applications screen, tap Settings → General → Cloud . This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Utilities 100 Clock Use this application to set alarms , check the time of many major cities in the world, measur e the duration of an ev ent, set a timer , or use as the desk clock.
Utilities 101 Stopping alarms Drag outside the large cir cle to stop an alarm. Drag outside the lar ge circle to repeat the alarm after a specified length of time. Deleting alarms T ap and hold the alarm, and then tap Delete . W orld clock Crea ting clocks T ap Add city and enter a city name or select a cit y from the cities list.
