Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . 1 Remove the back c over . Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er .
Getting star ted 11 • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card. • Use caution not to lose or let others use the SIM or USIM car d.

Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing upwar ds. 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Close the cov er of the memor y card slot. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 17 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 18 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
Getting star ted 19 S witching bet w een net w orks When you insert t wo SIM or USIM car ds, you can use two diff erent subscriptions on the same network without the need to carr y two devices at the same time . Activate two car ds and switch between them when making calls or sending messages.
20 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.

Basics 22 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures , and then drag the Motions and gestures switch to the right.
Basics 25 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker).
Basics 26 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 27 Rearranging it ems Adding an applica tion icon On the Home screen, tap Apps , tap and hold an application icon, and then drag it in to a panel preview .
Basics 28 Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen. Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen.
Basics 29 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 30 Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience . T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to Crea te folder . Enter a f older name and then tap OK . Put applica tions into the new f older by dragg ing, and then tap S ave to sav e the ar rangement.
Basics 31 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 32 Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone . The device display s what you speak. If the device does not recog nise your wor ds correctly , tap the underlined tex t and select an alternative w ord or phrase from the dr opdown list.
Basics 33 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Basics 34 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 35 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. Basics 36 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 37 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
38 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap or . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 39 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sign appears.
Communication 40 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to con tacts . Sending a message T ap → Send message to send a message to the number on displa y . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls.
Communication 41 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, tap Rejec t call with message . T o create the rejection message, tap → Call settings → Set up call reject messages .
Communication 42 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap . During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 43 T ap and hold your image t o access the f ollowing options: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera. • Outgoing image : Selec t an image to sho w it to the other par ty . Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images .

Communication 48 Messaging Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messaging on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 49 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 50 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduled email . Tick Scheduled email , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 51 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 52 Reading messages Mark the message as unread. Delete this message. Pr eview attachment. Mark the message as a reminder . Keep this message for long-term storage . Reply to this message. Reply to all recipients or f or ward this message to others.
Communication 53 Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice. T ap Google+ on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . T ap All to change the category , and then scroll up or down to view posts fr om your circles.

55 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpage T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 56 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 57 Opening a new page T ap → New tab . T o go to another w ebpage, tap , and then select a webpage. Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keywor d, and then selec t one of the suggested keywords that appear .
W eb & network 58 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
59 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 60 T o set a personalised sound while listening t o songs with a headset, tap → Settings → Adapt Sound → On . When you turn the v olume up to level 14 or higher , the adapt sound option is not applied to music playback. If you turn the volume down t o level 13 or low er , the option is reapplied .
Media 61 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 66) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 62 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 63 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap to take a video . T o pause rec ording , tap . T o stop rec ording , tap . T ap to take photos while taking a video . Recor ding mode T ap → to change the rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality .
Media 64 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 65 • ISO : Selec t an ISO value . This con trols camera light sensitivity . I t is measured in film- camera equivalents . Low values ar e for stationary or brightly-lit objec ts. Higher values ar e for fast -moving or poorly-lit objects. • GPS tag : Attach a GPS location tag t o the photo .
Media 66 Galler y Use this application to view images and videos . T ap Galler y on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 67 Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing func tions: • F av ourite : Add t o the favourites list . • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow with the images in the curren t folder . • Photo fr ame : Use this to add a frame and a not e to an image.
Media 68 Deleting images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images, and then tap . • When viewing an image, tap .
Media 69 Pla ying videos Selec t a video to pla y . Change screen ratio . Move f or wards or backwards by dragging the bar . Scan DLNA- enabled devices. Restar t the current video or skip to the previous video . T ap and hold to mov e backwards quickly .
Media 70 Y ou T ube Use this application to w atch videos fr om the Y ou T ube website . T ap Y ou T ube on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . W atching videos T ap , and then ent er a keyword.
Media 71 R adio Listen to music and new s on the FM r adio . T o listen to the F M radio, y ou must connec t a headset, which ser ves as the radio an tenna. T ap Radio on the Applications screen. Listening to the F M radio Plug a headset into the devic e befor e launching the FM radio .
Media 72 Scanning radio stations T ap → Scan , and then select a scan option. The FM r adio scans and saves a vailable stations automatically . Selec t the radio station y ou want from the stations list and tap to return t o the FM r adio screen.

Utilities 77 V iewing a memo T ap the memo thumbnail to open it. Scroll left or right to see mor e memos. T ap and use the follo wing: • Delete : Delete the memo . • Colour : Change the background c olour . • Lock : Lock the memo so tha t others cannot view it.
Utilities 78 Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place. Invite others to the ev ent by sending a message or email.
Utilities 79 Dropbo x Use this application to sa ve and share files with others via the Dropbo x cloud storage. When you sa ve files to Dr opbox, your device aut omatically syncs with the web server and any other computers that ha ve Dropbo x installed.
Utilities 80 Clock Use this application to set alarms , check the time of many major cities in the world, measur e the duration of an ev ent, or set a timer .
Utilities 81 Stopping alarms Drag outside the large cir cle to stop an alarm. Drag outside the large circle to r epeat the alarm after a specified length of time. Settings 90 W i-Fi Dir ec t Wi-F i Direct connects two devices directly via a Wi-F i network without requiring an access point. T ap Wi - Fi → W i-Fi Direct . Bluetooth Activate the Bluet ooth featur e to exchange inf or mation ov er shor t distances.

Settings 102 M o re Loca tion ser vices Change settings for location inf ormation permissions. • Ac cess to my loca tion : Set the device to allow applications t o use your current location information. • Use GPS sat ellites : Set the device to use the GPS satellit e for finding the current location.

Settings 104 Stor age View memory information for y our device and memor y card, or f ormat a memor y card. F ormatting a memor y card permanently deletes all data fr om it. The actual available capacity of the internal memor y is less than the specified capacity because the operating system and default applications oc cupy par t of the memor y .

T roubleshooting 106 The t ouch screen r esponds slowly or improperly • If you attach a prot ective cov er or optional accessories to the t ouch screen, the touch screen ma y not function properly .
T roubleshooting 107 Sound echoes during a call Adjust the v olume by pressing the V olume button or move t o another area. A cellular netw ork or the Internet is often disconnected or audio quality is poor • Ensure that y ou are not block ing the device ’ s internal ant enna.
T roubleshooting 108 Y our device is hot t o the touch When you use applica tions that requir e more power or use applications on y our device for an extended period of time, your devic e may f eel hot to the touch. This is normal and should not affect your device ’ s lif espan or per formanc e.
