Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Using a Samsung-appro ved scr een protector is rec ommended. Unapprov ed screen protectors may cause the sensors t o malfunc tion.

Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 11 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 12 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 13 1 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 2 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 14 Replacing the S P en nib While using the S P en, the S Pen nib ma y get dull. If the nib is dull, replace it with a new one . 1 Hold the nib with the tweezers firmly , and then pull it out. 2 Inser t a new nib into the S P en until you hear a click.
Getting star ted 15 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 16 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
17 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 18 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers or the S P en to use the touch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion.
Basics 19 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options. Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position.
Basics 20 Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part. Double -tap again to return. F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts.
Basics 21 Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Pinch to zoom out . C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device.
Basics 22 T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion . • Some applications do not allow screen r otation. • Some applications display a diff erent scr een depending on the or ientation.
Basics 23 P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → P alm motion , and then drag the P alm motion switch to the right.
Basics 24 Samsung Smar t P ause Use this f eature t o pause videos when you look aw ay from the scr een. On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Smar t screen , and then tick Smar t pause . During video playback, look away from the scr een to pause the video .
Basics 25 U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w panel can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 26 2 T ap and hold an application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to the scr een. Release the application icon when the screen turns blue . 3 T ap and hold another application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 27 1 Launch Email and Internet in a split screen Multi W indow . Acc ess the Multi Windo w options. 2 T ap the circle between the applica tion windows , and then tap . T ap the circle between applica tion windows to ac cess the following options: • : Open a list of recen tly used applications in the selected window .
Basics 28 3 T ap and hold an item in the Internet window and drag it t o a location in the Email window . Crea ting a Multi Windo w combination Use this f eature t o save curr ently-running Multi W indow applications as a combina tion. 1 Launch multiple applications in a split screen Multi Window .
Basics 29 U sing the S P en The included S P en can be used to easily select items or per form func tions. A c tions using the S P en with the button pressed pro vide additional conv eniences, such as screen captur e. Pull out the S P en from the slot to use it .
Basics 30 Capturing scr eenshots With the S P en button pr essed, touch the scr een until you hear a click. A screenshot is saved in the Galler y → Screenshots folder . It is possible to draw or write on or to cr op a screenshot. The edited image is sav ed in the Galler y → IMG_edited folder .
Basics 31 Selec ting and capturing an image With the S P en button pr essed, dra w a closed shape along the outline of an image to capture . If necessar y , use one of the following options: • : Restore the original selection. • : Con ver t the selec tion to a cir cular shape.
Basics 32 Launching applications in the selected area T ap P en Window on the air command. Dr aw a line ar ound an area, and then select an application. The application is launched in the area that y ou have dr awn. T o minimise the application, tap .
Basics 33 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report new messages, calendar events , device status, and more . Drag down from the status bar t o open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 34 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 35 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen.
Basics 36 Adding widgets t o the Home screen On the Home screen, tap → W idgets . Scroll left or right on the widgets panel, and then tap and hold a widget to add it to the Home scr een. Put it on a location you wan t, resiz e it by dragging the frame if nec essar y , and then tap anywhere on the screen to sa ve the location of the widget.
Basics 37 Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled . Disabling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to disable it.
Basics 38 Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance . Pr ess and hold the Home button, tap T ask manager , and then tap End next to an application to close it. T o close all running applications, tap End all .
Basics 39 Entering upper case T ap befor e entering a charac ter . F or all caps, tap it twice. Changing the ke yboard type T ap to change the keyboard type . On the floating keyboard , tap and hold and move the floa ting keyboard to another location.
Basics 40 Direct pen input On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Con trols → S P en → Direct pen input , and then drag the Direct pen input switch to the right. When hov er ing the S P en over a text field, icon appears at the upper left corner of the text field.
Basics 41 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 108) T urning W i-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap Wi - Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 42 F orgetting W i-Fi net w orks Any network that has ev er been used, including the current network, can be forgott en so the device will not automatically c onnec t to it.
Basics 43 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices .
Basics 44 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a signatur e On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → Signatur e .
Basics 45 Setting a PIN On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → PIN . Enter at least f our numbers, and then enter the passw ord again to v er ify it. Setting a passwor d On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P asswor d .
Basics 46 Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware . This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider . Upgr ading with Samsung K ies Launch Samsung Kies and connec t the device to the c omputer .
47 C ommunication C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information.
Communication 48 Searching f or con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the left side of the contacts list for quick scr olling, by dragging a finger along it.
Communication 49 Impor ting and expor ting contacts T ap Con tacts . Impor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an impor t option. Expor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an expor t option.
Communication 50 Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Edit : Change the group settings . • Create : Make a new group . • Remov e member : Remove members fr om the group .
Communication 51 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 52 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list. Delete the message.
Communication 53 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap SEND . T ap +C C/BCC to add more r ecipients. T ap to attach images . T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y . T ap → Attach file to attach images , videos, music , and others.
Communication 54 Hangouts Use this application to cha t with others. T ap Hangouts on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . Selec t a friend from the friends list or enter da ta to search and select a friend from the r esults to star t chatting .
Communication 55 Photos Use this application to view and shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vices. T ap Photos on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
56 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to acc ess additional options while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 57 Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy . T o view sa ved links , use Downloads . (p . 105) Sharing w ebpages T o shar e a webpage addr ess with others, tap → Share via .
W eb & network 58 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap , speak a keyword, and then select one of the suggested keywor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 59 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the auto- generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
W eb & network 60 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y content sav ed on remotely-located devic es or web stor age ser vices ov er the I nternet. Y ou can play and send multimedia files on y our device to another device or web st orage ser vice.
W eb & network 61 Smar t Remote Use this application to use the devic e as a remote contr ol for T V s and enter tainment systems . T ap Smar t Remote on the Applications screen. Y ou must first connec t the device to a Wi-F i net work and ensur e that the device’ s infrared port is facing the T V .
W eb & network 62 W a tchON Use this application to c onnec t to a T V to watch your fa vourite shows and movies . T ap W atchON on the Applications screen. Y ou must first connec t the device to a network and ensur e that the device ’ s infrar ed por t is facing the T V .
63 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. Pla ying music Selec t a music category , and then selec t a song to play . T ap the album image at the bottom of the scr een to open the music player scr een.
Media 64 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Adv anced → Smar t volume . When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 65 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 72 ) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 66 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 67 • Rich tone (HDR) : Use this to take a phot o with an improv ed contrast ratio . • Eraser : Use this to erase the mo vements of moving objects in the background . T ap to take a series of photos . The device er ases traces of mov ement from a moving object.
Media 68 Applying filter eff ec ts Use the filter eff ec ts to take unique photos or videos . T ap and select a filter effect. The available options v ar y by mode . T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap to take a video . T o pause r ecording , tap . T o stop rec ording , tap .
Media 69 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 70 Share shot T ap → , and then select one of the following: • Share shot : Send a photo directly to another device via Wi-F i Direct. • Buddy photo share : Set the device to rec ognise a person ’ s face that you ha ve tagged in a photo and send it to that person.
Media 71 • ISO : Selec t an ISO value . This con trols camera light sensitivity . I t is measured in film- camera equivalents . Low values ar e for stationary or brightly-lit objec ts. Higher values ar e for fast -moving or poorly-lit objects. • V ideo stabilisation : Activate or deactivate an ti-shake.
Media 72 • Flash : Activate or deactivate the flash. • V oice con trol : Set the camera to take photos with v oice commands . • Con textual filename : Set the camera to display c ontextual tags. A ctivate this to use T ag Buddy in Galler y and Story Album .
Media 73 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods to z oom in an image: • Double -tap anywhere to zoom in. • Spread two fingers apart on any place to z oom in. Pinch t o zoom out, or double -tap to return. V iewing images using the motion featur e Use the motion f eature t o execut e a function with par ticular motion.
Media 74 • Print : Print the image b y connec ting the device to a print er . Some pr inters ma y not be compatible with the device . • Rename : Rename the file. • Buddy photo share : Send the image to a person whose face is tagged in the image .
Media 75 Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images, and then tap to send them to others or share them via social network ser vices . • When viewing an image, tap to send it to others or shar e it via social network ser vices.
Media 76 St or y Album Use this application to cr eate your own dig ital album to keep your st ories by organising the images neatly and automatically . T ap Story Album on the Applications screen. T o start Story Album , you need to do wnload and install the application.
Media 77 Deleting videos T ap → Delete , select videos, and then tap Delete . Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select videos, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. Using P opup V ideo play er Use this f eature t o use other applications without closing the video play er .

Crea ting notes When running S Note f or the first time, tap Star t to set the default co ver and a templa te. F ollow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup .
Utilities 85 T o delete a fr ame, tap and hold the frame , and then tap Delete . When jotting down a not e, tap to change the pen type, line thickness, or pen colour . Change the line thickness. Change the pen colour . Save the curr ent setting as a pen profile .
Utilities 86 Editing handwritten not es Selec t a handwritten note t o cut, mov e, r esize, or tr ansform it. When jotting down or drawing a note , tap . Then, tap the note or dr aw a line around it t o selec t and edit it. T o mov e the note to another location, select the note, and then drag it t o a new location.
Utilities 87 Inser ting multimedia files T ap to insert images, videos, voic e memos, and more. Inser ting an idea sketch T ap → Idea Sketch , and then write a keyword or select a categor y to sear ch for images. Utilities 93 Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place. Attach a map showing the loca tion of the event.
Utilities 94 Dropbo x Use this application to sa ve and share files with others via the Dropbo x cloud storage. When you sa ve files to Dr opbox, your device aut omatically syncs with the web server and any other computers that ha ve Dropbo x installed.
Utilities 95 Back ing up or rest oring data T ap Backup or tap Restore to back up or rest ore data with your Samsung accoun t. Syncing with Dr opbox T ap Link Dropbo x account , and then enter the Dr opbox ac count. F ollow the on-scr een instructions to complete the setup .

Utilities 99 Stopping alarms Drag outside the large cir cle to stop an alarm. Drag outside the lar ge circle to repeat the alarm after a specified length of time. Deleting alarms T ap and hold the alarm, and then tap Delete . W orld Clock Use this application to check the time of man y major cities in the world.
Utilities 100 S T ransla tor Use this application to tr anslate te xt into other languages. T ap S T ranslator on the Applications screen. T o start S T ranslator , you need to do wnload and install the application. T ap Install , and then follo w the on-screen instructions.
Utilities 101 S F inder Use this application to sear ch for a wide variety of items on the device, including emails , documents, images , music, applications, and mor e. T ap and hold to launch S F inder . T ap the search field , and then enter search criteria.
