Getting Started 6 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed informat ion about how to use your device. T o mak e this possible, the following text conventions are used to represent often-used s teps: Batt er y Y our device is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion batter y .
7 Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time. After the first c harge, you can use the device while charging. 1. Insert the USB cable into the C harging Head (1). 2. Insert th e USB cable i nto the device’ s Charge r/ Accessory Port (2).

25 Pinch Use two fingers , such as your index finger and thumb, to make an inward pinch motion on the screen, as if you are picking something up, or an outward moti on by sweeping your fingers out. For example: • Pinch a photo in Gall ery to zoom in.
Understanding Y our Device 26 S P en The S Pen is a stylus that assists you in p erforming different functions. By using the Pen b u tton, you can minimize having to switch between touch and pen input. 1. Pen button : by pressing the P en button, you can add functionality to the S P en.
27 R emo ving the S Pen F rom Y our Device The S Pen is conveniently stored in your device to make it easy to find. T o remove the S Pen, follow these steps: 1. Locate the S Pen at the lower right corner of the device (1). 2. Use your finger nail or a sharp object to pull the end of the S Pen out of the device (2).

T o open the S Note Mini App, hold the S P en button and double-tap the screen. For mor e information, refer to “Mini App T ray” on pa ge 39.
29 Notifications When you receive a noti fication, the Noti fication icons display in the System Bar , to the left o f the Time. Notifications indicate the arrival of Gmail, Em ail, alarms, and more. T ouch a Notifica tion icon for more detail. For example, touch a Gmail Notification icon to see who sent the me ssage.

Entering T ext 46 Section 3: Entering T ext This section describes ho w to enter words, letters, punctuation and numbers when you need to enter text. Samsung K eyboar d Y our device uses a virtual QWERTY keyb oard for text entry called the Samsung keyboard .
47 Using the Samsung K eyboar d The Samsung keyboard is a cust om virtual QWERTY keyboard, featuring predictive text. Input char acters by touching the on-screen keys with your finger or use speech recognition. As you enter characters, predic tive text matches your key touches to common words and di splay s them.

49 Using XT9 Predictive T ext XT9 is a predictive text system tha t has next-letter prediction and regional error correction, which compensates for users pressing the wrong keys on QWERTY keyboards. 1. T ouch Set up input methods in the Status bar . The Set up input method s pop-up displays.

Entering T ext 52 Using the Handwriting F eature Y ou can enter text simp ly by using your finger or the S P en to handwrite letters on your scre en. 1. From a screen where you can enter text, activa te the keyboard by touching a text input field on the screen.
53 Handwriting Tips • For uppercase letters, write the letter larger than the lower case letters. • Write a dash (horizonta l line) to add a space. • Delete words by sweepin g backward across them. • T o display numb ers and symbols, to uch and then touch a number or symbol key .
Entering T ext 54 Using Speec h Recognition Y ou can use your voice to enter text using the Voice input feature, which lets you enter text by speaking.
55 Section 4: Contacts and Accounts This section explains how to manage contac ts and account s. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that changes in your accounts.

T ouch the Photo ID, t hen touch Remove , Picture , or Ta k e picture . Contacts Display Options There are various ways to display your Contacts and general Contacts settings.
59 • Share nameca rd via : Shares the selecte d namecard using Bluetooth, ChatON, Dropbox, Em ail, Gmail, or through Wi-Fi Direct. • Print nameca rd : Check mark the fields you want to print a nd then touch Print . Y ou can only print on a Samsung printer .

61 Sharing Contact Information Y ou can send a contact’ s information by way of Bluetooth to other Bluetooth devices or in an Email o r Gmail as an attachmen t. Note: Not all Bluetooth devices accept contacts and not all devices support transfers of multiple contact s.

Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster or to quickly send messages to group members.
63 Deleting Groups T o delete a group that you created: 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts . 2. T ouch Groups and then touch any group you want to delete. 3. To u c h Menu ➔ Delete . The groups that can be deleted display . 4. T ouch Select all or the name of each group to delete.

Messaging 72 Managing Y our Email Accounts Y ou can view email yo u receive for all accounts in the Combined view screen or you can view email accounts individually . 1. From a Home screen, touch Email . 2. T ouch the drop-down menu at the top left of the screen to select: • Combined view : View all email in a combined inbox.
73 Composing and Sending Email 1. From a Home screen, touch Email . 2. T ouch an account, if you ha ve more than one account set up, then touch Compos e . 3. Enter the recipient’ s email address in the To field. • If you are sending the em ail message to several recipients, separate the email addre sses with a comma.
Messaging 74 7. T ouch Save to save the email to the Drafts folder , Send to send the email, or Delete to d elete the email. Account Settings Account settings lets you confi gure handling of email on your device.
75 Common settings • Account name : Enter a name to ide ntify this account. •Y o u r n a m e : Enter a name to be used on emails. •S i g n a t u r e : Enter a signature to add to em ail from this account. • Def ault acco unt : When enabled , email from your device is automatically sent from this a ccount.

77 • Pas s wo r d : The passwor d for your email account, which shou ld be filled in. • Exchange server / IMAP server : The fully reso lved domain na me of your email service pr ovider’ s server , for example, mail.
Messaging 78 Google T alk T alk is G oogle’ s instant messag ing and audio and video chat service. Y ou can use it to communica te, in real time, with other people who also use Goo gle T alk on another Android tablet or phone or on a comput er . Tip : T alk requires tha t you have a Google account.
79 View and Accept an Invitation to Be come a Friend When a contact invites you to be come a friend in Go ogle T alk , you receive a notifica tion in the System Bar and the invitation displays in your Friends list.
Messaging 80 •A d d t o c h a t : Choose another friend to invite to th is convers a tion. • Clear chat history : Remove the history of this chat from your device. Note: If you touch the REMOVE option, touch Add friend ➔ Send chat invitation to, to make the Friend visible again.
81 • Away when screen off : Check to change your T alk status to Away when your screen tu rns off . When unchecke d, your status is not changed. • Invitation notifications : Show notification when a frie nd invitation arrives.

91 Inter net Quic k Controls Use Quick Contro ls to maximize your viewing area while browsing the internet. 1. From the Home screen, touch Internet . 2. While viewing a webpage, touch Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Labs , and then touch Quick Controls to enable the function.

95 Maps Settings Use the Maps settings to custom ize your Maps ap plication. 1. From the Home screen, touch Maps . 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Settings to set the follo wing Maps options: •D i s p l a y : Set the following Maps display options: – Zoom Buttons : If enabled, the zoom in ( + ) and zoom out ( - ) buttons are displayed on the map.
