2 How to Read This Manual The following set of symbols is used in this manual. This symbol indicates a potentially h azardous situation that might result in death or serious injury wh en you misuse the machine without following the in- structions under this symbol.

Paper and Other Media Paper and Other Media Supported by This Printer This section describes the paper size, feed direction, and the maximum amount of paper that ca n be loaded into each paper tr ay in this printer. Note ❒ The following sym bols and termin ology are used to represent the feed directi on.

Loading P aper 13 1 Loading Paper This describes how to load paper into the paper tray and bypass tray. R CAUTION: Loading Paper in Tray 1 and the optional paper feed unit The following example explains load- ing procedure for the standard paper tray (Tray 1).

If you do, the front and side guides might move. Reference For more information about type, size and feed direction of paper that can be loaded in the tray, see p.

Important ❒ Confirm that the ca tches return to their original positions s e- curely. If they are not l ocked se- curely, paper misfeeds might occur.

Replacing the Toner Cartri dge 31 2 E Place the toner cartr idge on a flat surface. Pull out the ta pe inside the unit horizontally while hold- ing the cartridge with one hand as shown in the ill ustration.

Replace the maintenance kit if the fol- lowing message ap pears on the dis- play: Before Replacing Replace all the parts included in Maintenance Kit at the same time.
Replacing t he Maintenanc e Kit 33 2 Replacing the Friction Pad Replace all friction pad of the tray. There are two kinds of friction pads. One is for the paper tray (Tray 1), and the other are for the paper fee d unit(s) (Tray 2, 3). The following procedure shows how to replacing friction pad of the paper tray (Tray1).
Replacing Con sumables and Mai ntenance Kit 34 2 E Return the paper tray to its origi- nal position, and then remove the friction pad from the tray. Note ❒ The friction pad spring may come off. Be careful not to lose the friction pad spring. F Insert the new friction pad in the paper t ray.
Replacing t he Maintenanc e Kit 35 2 Replacing the Transfer Roller A Open the front cover by pushi ng the front cover release button. B Pull the tone r cart ridge out of the printer, while lifting the front side. Note ❒ Be sure to place the used car- tridge on the level place.

Important ❒ Do not insert the roller on the back of the socket, or the printer might be damaged. ❒ Insert the metallic part of the roller on the socket.

43 3. Cleaning the Printer Cautions to Take When Cleaning R WARNING: R CAUTION: Clean the printer periodically to maintain fine printing. Dr y wip e t he e xte rio r wi th a sof t c lot h. I f dr y wi pin g is not en ough , w ipe wit h a soft, wet cloth that is wrung out well.
Cleaning th e Printer 44 3 Cleaning the Friction Pad If the friction pad is dirty, a multi- feed or a misfeed might occur. In this case, clean the pad as follows: A Lift the paper tray slightly, and then pull it out until it stops. Lift the front side of the tray, an d then pull it out of the printer.
Cleaning the Paper Feed Ro ller 45 3 Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller If the paper feed roller is dirty, a mis- feed might occur. In this case, clean the roller as follows: R CAUTION: Important ❒ The following are examples of clean- ing the paper feed roller on the pa- per tr ay.
Cleaning th e Printer 46 3 E Slide the green lock lever to the left ( ), so that the paper feed roller can be rele ased ( ). F Wipe the rubber part of the roller with a soft damp cloth. Then, wipe it with a dry cloth to remove the wat er. Important ❒ Do not use chemical cleaner or organic so lvent su ch as thinne r or benzene.
Cleaning th e Registrat ion Roller 47 3 Cleaning the Registration Roller If the registration roller is dirty, a mis- feed might occur. In this case, clean the roller as follows: R WARNING: R CAUTION: Clean the registration roller if dots (caused by specks of paper stuck to the roller) appear on printed OHP transparencies.
Cleaning th e Printer 48 3 E Hold the grips of the toner car- tridge, and then insert it into th e printer until it s tops. F Lower the toner cartridg e when it touches the back. G Close the front cover by pressing the left and right side indent a- tions.
49 4. Adjusting the Printer Adjusting the Image Density You can adjust the image densit y when the print side of the page is shaded or print image is too light. Important ❒ Extreme settings may create print- outs that app ear dirty. ❒ Image density settings should be made from the application or the printer driver whenever possible.
Adjustin g the Printer 50 4 Adjusting Tray Registration You can adjust th e registration of each tray. The verti cal adjustment is used for all trays. Normally, you need not update the registrati on. But w hen the optional paper feed unit or the duplex unit is installed, updating i s useful in some cases.
Adjusting Tray Regist ration 51 4 I Press the {U} or {T} key to set the digit of the registration value (mm). Increase the value to shift the print area in the positive direction, and decrease to shift in the negative di- rection. Note ❒ Pressing the {U} or {T} key makes the value increase or de- crease by 1.

53 5. Troubleshooting Error & Status Messages on the Control Panel This section explains what the messages that appear on th e control panel mean and what to do when a pa rticular message appears.
Troubles hooting 54 5 Hardware Problem Ethernet An error has occurred in the optional Network Interface Board. Turn the power off, and t hen on. If the message appears again, call your sales or service repres entative. Hardware Problem HDD An error has occurred in the optional Hard Disk Drive.
Error & Status Mess ages on the Con trol Panel 55 5 Hardware Problem Option RAM The printer iden tified an op- tional RAM error. Turn the power off, and then on. Re- move and re-install the optional RAM. If the message appears again, contact your sales or ser vice representative.
Troubles hooting 56 5 HDD not Installed You cannot print the sample print and the locked print jobs, because the optional Hard Disk Drive is not inst alled. Install the Hard Disk Dr ive. See “Attaching Hard Disk Drive Type 2600”, Setup Guide. Hex Dump Mode The printer is in Hex Dum p Mode.
