G ETTING S TARTED 2.2 Setting Up Your Machine Unpacking 1 Remo ve the machine a nd all accessori es from the packing carton. Make sure that the machine has been packed with the foll owi ng it em s: N OTES : • Co mpon ents may d iffer from co untry to cou ntry .

G ETTING S TARTED 2.4 Selecting a Lo cation Select a level , stable place wit h adequat e space fo r air circulation. Allow extra space for opening door s and trays. The area should be we ll-ventilated and away f rom direc t sunlig ht or sources of heat, cold, and humidity .
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.5 Installing the Toner Cartridge 1 Open the front door . 2 R emove the start er toner cartridge from it s bag. Gently roll the cartridge 5 or 6 times to distribute the toner . Thoroughly roll ing the cartridge wi ll assure maxi mum copies per cartr idge.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.6 3 Hold the toner cartridge by the handle. Slowly insert the cartridge into th e opening in the mac hine. T abs on the sides of the cartridge and corr esponding grooves within the machine will guide the cartridge into the correct position until it locks into place completely .
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.7 Loading Pa per The paper tra y can hold a maximum of 25 0 sheets of 20 lb plain paper . T o load a stack of Letter-sized paper : 1 Pull open the paper tray and remov e it from the machine. 2 F an the edges of the paper stack to separate the pages.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.8 4 Pa y attention to the paper limit mark on both in side walls of the tray . Paper overloading may cause pa per jams. 5 Insert and slide the pa per tray back into the machine. N OTE : Aft er you load pap er , you need to set up your mach ine for the paper t ype and size you loaded .
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.9 Changing the Size of the Paper i n the Paper Tray T o load longer sizes of paper , such as Legal-sized pa per , you need to adjust the paper guides to extend the paper tray . 1 After pressing and unlatching the guide lock, s lide the paper length guide out comple tely to extend the paper tray to its full length.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.10 3 Squeeze the width guide, as shown and slide it to the stack of paper until it lightly touches the side of the stack. N OTES : • Do not push t he paper wid th guide f ar enough to cause t he materials to warp. • If you do no t adjust the paper wi dth guide, it may cause paper jams.
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.11 Making Connections 1 Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the LINE jack on the machine and the oth er end into the wall jack. If you want to use your machine to receive both faxes and voice ca lls, you will need to connect a telephone and/or answering machine to your machine.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.12 N OTE : In th e United Kingdom , if a thr ee-wir e type (SHU NT - wir e, older equ ipment) tel ephone or answering mach ine is conn ected to the EXT j ack on the machine , the external equipme nt will fai l to ring when receiving an incoming call as the machine is designed to oper ate with the latest techn ology .
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.13 2 Connect a USB cable to the U SB connector on your machine. If you want to use a parall el printer cable, purchase only an IEEE-1284 compliant parallel cable and connect it to the para llel connector on your mac hine. Push the metal clips down to fit inside th e notches on the ca ble pl ug.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.14 If you want to use a network cable, plug one end of the Ethernet cable (UTP cable with RJ.45 connector) into the Ethernet network port on the machine and the other end of the cable into a network LAN connection. N OTE : Y ou can configure the network parameters using the contro l panel; see pa ge A.
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.15 Turning the Machine On 1 Plug one end of the supplied thr ee-pronged electrical cor d into the AC socket on the machine a nd the other end into a properly grounded AC outlet. 2 Press the power switch to turn the machine on. “W arming Up Please W ait” app ears on the dis play indicating that the machine is now on.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.16 Setting Up the Machine System Changing the Display Language T o change the langua ge that displays on the control panel, follow these steps: 1 Pres s Menu until “Machine Setup” appears on the top line of the display . 2 Pres s the scroll button ( or ) until “Language” appea rs on the bottom line of the display .
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.17 Setting the Machine ID In some countries, you are required by law to indicate your fax number on any fax you send. The Machine ID , containing your telephone number and name (or company name), wi ll be printed at the top of each page sent from your machine.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.18 Entering Characters U sing the Number Keypad As you perform v arious tasks, you need to enter names and numbers. For example, when you set up your machine, you enter your name (or your compan y’s na me) and telephone number .

G ETTING S TARTED 2.20 Setting the Date and Time The curre nt date a nd time a re shown on the display when your machine is on and ready to work. F or thi s machine, all of y our faxes will have the date and time printed on them .
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.21 Changing the Clo ck Mode Y ou can set your machine to display the current time usi ng either a 12-hour or 24-hour format. 1 Pres s Menu until “Machine Setup” appears on the top line of the display . 2 Press the scroll button ( or ) until you see “Clock Mode” on the bottom line and press Enter .

Y ou can turn this mode on and select a length of time for which the machine w aits after a job is printed befor e it switches to a reduce d power state.

This R epair procedure does not physically repair SmarThru s oftware. Printer driver , Scanner driver , Printer Settings Utility and Set IP programs could be repaired.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.44 Removing Software Uninstall is req uired if you are upgrad ing the software or if your installation fails. Y ou can uninstall the item you want using the Windows uninstallShield. Uninstalling the M FP Driver 1 Start Windows. 2 From the Start menu select Programs or All Programs Æ Type 103 Æ Maintenance .

Y ou may be prompt ed to resta rt your comput er . In this case you must shut the comput er down and then restart it b efore the changes will be saved.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.46 Using the Set IP The Set IP can detect printers in t he same network and display the network information. In addition, this application can configure the network information of the printer that has own network interface ca rd. Installing Set IP 1 Place the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.49 The Scan Settings Tab Click the Scan Settings tab to configure the scan desti nation list that appe ars on the control panel display when you press Scan-to on the control panel. Using the destination list, you can select a software program that an image can be sca nned to.

P APER H ANDLING 3.2 Selecting Pri nt Materials Y ou can print on a variety of print material s, such as p lain paper , envelopes, labels, tr ansparencies, and etc.. Alw ays use print materials that mee t the guidelines for use with this machine. See “Paper Specifications” on page C.
3 P APER H ANDLING 3.3 Guidelines f or Pape r and Special Materia ls When selecting or loading paper , envelopes, or other special material, keep these guidelines in mind: • Always use paper and other materials that conform with the specifications liste d under “Paper Specificat ions” on page C.
P APER H ANDLING 3.4 - T o avoid smudgin g caused by fingerprin ts, handle them carefully . - T o avoid fading, do not expose prin ted tr ansparencies to prolonged s unlight. •F o r l a b e l s : - V erify that their adhesiv e material can tolerate a fusing temper ature of 200 o C (392 o F) for 0.

When the tray is empty , the indicator of the ba r is completely lo wered. T o loa d paper , p ull open the paper tray and l oad paper w ith the side to be printed on face dow n.
P APER H ANDLING 3.6 In the Multipur pose Tray The Multipurpos e tray can hold several sizes and types of print material, such as transparenci es, postcards, note cards , and envelopes. It is useful for single page printing on letterhead or colored paper .

P APER H ANDLING 3.10 Selecting an Output Location The machine has two output locations: the rear output slot (face up) and the front output tray (face down). T o use the front output tray , make sure that the rear door is closed. T o use the rear output slot, open the rear door .
3 P APER H ANDLING 3.11 Printing to the Rear Ou tput Slot (Face up) Using the rear output slot, paper comes out of the machine face up. Printing from the Multipurp ose tray to the rear output slot provides a straight pape r path .

P RINT I NG T ASKS 4.2 Printing a D ocument in Windows The following procedure describes th e general steps required for printing from various Windows ap plications. The exact st eps for printing a doc ument may vary depending on the appl ication pro gr am y ou ar e u sing.
4 P RINT I NG T ASKS 4.3 Canceling a Pri nt Job There are two ways to cancel a print job: T o stop a pr int job from the control pane l: Press the Clear/S top button. Y our machine finishes printing the page that is moving through t he machine and deletes the rest of the p rint job.
P RINT I NG T ASKS 4.4 Printer Settings Y ou can use the printer properties wi ndow , which allows you to access all of the printer options you need when using your machine. When the printer properties are displayed, you can review and chang e whatever settings are ne eded for your print job.
