AV Receiver HT-R548 Instruction Manual Thank you for purchasing an Onkyo AV Receiver. Please read this manual thoroughl y before making connections and plugg ing in the unit. Following th e instructions in this manual will enable you to obtain opti mum performance and listening enjoyment from your new AV Receiver.

10 En Connections Connecting the AV Receiver Connecting the Speaker Cables The following illustration shows wh ich speaker should be connec ted to each pair of terminals. ■ Push-type speaker ter minals Strip 10 to 12 mm of insulation from the ends of the speaker cables, and twist the bare wire s tightly, as shown.
11 En Speaker Configura tion The following table indicate s the channels you sh ould use depending on the number of speakers that you have. No matter how many speakers you use, a powered subwoofer is recommended for a really powerful and solid bass.
12 En Connecting AV componen ts • Before making any AV connections, read the manuals supplied with your AV components. • Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed and double-check ed all AV connections. • Push plugs in all the way to make good connect ions (loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions).
13 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assi gnments are shown below. ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ page 33 ).

Video signals input from AUX INPUT VIDEO will be output from the MONITOR OUT jack.
15 En With u (Remote Interactive), you can use the following special functions: ■ System On/Auto Power On When you start playback on a component connected via u , if the AV receiver is on Standby, it will automatically turn on and sele ct that component as the input source.
16 En This section explains how to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The AV receiver won’t pick up any radio signals without any antenna connected, so yo u must connect the antenna to use the tuner.
17 En Turning On & Basi c Operations Turning On/Off the AV Receiver Tip • See “Auto Standby” about a power management setting ( ➔ page 39 ). Turning On 1 Press 8 ON/STANDBY on the front panel. or Press RECEIVER followed by 8 on the remote controller.

20 En This section explains how to play music files on a USB device (e.g., USB flash drives and MP3 players). See also: • “USB Features” ( ➔ page 51 ). Note • If the media you connect is not suppor ted, the message “ No Storage ” will appear on the display.
21 En ■ Tuning into stati ons by frequency You can tune into AM and FM stations directly by entering the appropriate frequency. Presetting AM/F M Stations You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite AM/FM radio stations as presets.
22 En ■ Finding Stations by Type (PTY) You can search for ra dio stations by type. ■ Listening to Traffic News (TP) You can search for stations that broadcast traffic news. RDS progra m types (PTY ) 1 Press RT/PTY/TP twice. The current program type appears on the display.
23 En Using Basic Functions With the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey 2EQ ® automatically de termines the number of speakers connected, their si ze for purposes of bass management, optimum cross over frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the primary listening position.
24 En Note • You can cancel Audyssey 2EQ Room Correctio n and Speaker Setup at any point in this pro cedure simply by disconn ecting the setup microphone. • Do not connect or disconnect any speak ers during Audyssey 2EQ Roo m Correction and Speaker Setup.
25 En Error Messages While Audyssey 2EQ ® Room Correction and Speaker Setup is in progress, one of the error messages below may appear. The options are: ` Retry : Try again. ` Cancel : Cancel Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup. • Ambient noise is too high.
26 En Selecting Listening Modes See “Listening Modes” for detailed information about the listening modes ( ➔ page 27 ). ■ Listening Mode Buttons MOVIE/TV bu tton This button selects the list ening modes intended for use with movies and TV. MUSIC button This button selects the list ening modes intended for use with music.
27 En Speaker Layout The illustration shows which speakers are activated in each channe l. See “Sp C onfig (Speaker Configuration)” for the speaker setup ( ➔ page 34 ).
28 En Note *1 These listening modes cannot be selected during USB or iPod playback. *2 For the Blu-ray Discs, Dolby Digital is used. *3 AV receiver can input the DSD signal from HDMI IN. Setting the ou tput setting on the player side to PCM might obtain a better sound according to the player.
29 En The Home menu provides you quick access to frequently used menus without having to go th rough the long standard menu. This menu enab les you to change settings and view the current information. Note *1 Depending on the inpu t source and listening mode, not all channels show n here outpu t the sound.
30 En You can adjust the bright ness of the AV receiver’s display. You can display various info rmation abo ut the current input source as follows. The following information ca n typically be displayed. Tip • Alternatively, you can use the AV receiver’s DISPLAY .
31 En You can temporarily mute the output of the AV receiver. This section explains how to record the selected input source to a component with recording capability, and how to record audio and vide o from different sources. AV Recording Audio sources can be recorded to a recorder (e.
32 En Advanced Operations Advanced Setup Note • The on-screen setup men us are displayed when: – There is no video input, or – The video input is 480p, 576p, 720p , 1080i, or 1080p. The on-screen setup menus appear on the connected TV and provide a convenient way to change the AV receiver’s various settings.
33 En Explanatory Notes Menu HDMI Input If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that input to an input selecto r. For example, if you connect your Blu-ra y Disc/DVD player to HDMI IN 2 , you must assign “ HDMI2 ” to the “ BD/DVD ” input selector.
34 En Menu Sp Config This section explains how to specify which speakers are connected and their sizes. For speakers with a cone diamet er larger than 16 cm, spec ify Large (full band). For those with a smaller diameter , specify Small (default crossover 150 Hz).
35 En Menu Level Cal Here you can adjust the level of each speaker with the built-in test tone so that the volume of each speaker is the same at the listeni ng position. ■ Left, Center *1 , Right, Surroun d Right, Surround Left ` –12 dB to 0d B to +12 dB in 1 dB step.
36 En Theater-Dime nsional Setting ■ Listening Angle ` Wide : Select if the listeni ng angle is 40 degrees. ` Narrow : Select if the listeni ng angle is 20 degrees. With this setting, you can optimize the Theater- Dimensional listeni ng mode by specifying t he angle of the front left and right speakers relative to the listening position.
37 En ■ Dynamic Vol ume ` Off ` Light : Light Compression M ode becomes active. ` Medium : Medium Compression M ode becomes active. ` Heavy : Heavy Compression Mode becom es active. This setting affects vol ume the most, most. It qui ets the loud parts, such as explos ions, and boosts the quiet parts so they can be heard.
38 En Audio Selector ■ Audio Selector ` ARC : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT of the AV receiver. *1 With this selection the TV’s audio can be automatically sele cted as a priority among other assignments. ` HDMI : This can be selected when HDMI IN has been assigned as an input source.
39 En Auto Standby ■ Auto Standby ` Off ` On When “ Auto Standby ” is set to “ On ”, AV receiv er will automatically perform standby operation if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio and no video signal input. “ Auto Standby ” will display on the display and OSD from 30 seconds before th e Auto Standby functions.
40 En ■ Audio Return Ch (ARC) ` Off ` Auto : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT of the AV receiver. The audio return channel (ARC) function allows an ARC capable TV to send the audio stream to the HDMI OUT of the AV receiver.
41 En Audyssey Setting s ■ Audyssey See “Audyssey” ( ➔ page 36 ) ■ Dynam ic EQ See “Dynamic EQ” ( ➔ page 36 ) ■ Dynamic Vol ume See “Dynamic Volume” ( ➔ page 37 ). Note • These technologies can be used when all the following conditions are met: – Room Correction and Speaker Setu p is completed.
42 En Controlling Other Components iPod/iPhone Playback via Onkyo Dock RI Dock With the RI Dock, you can easily play the music stored on your Apple iPod/iPhone through the AV receiver and enjoy great sound, and watch iPod/iPhone slideshows and videos on your TV.
43 En ✔ : Available buttons Note • With some iPod/iPhone models and generations, certa in buttons may not work as e xpected. • For detailed operation of the iPod/i Phone , please refer to the instruction manual. *1 This button does not turn the Onky o DS-A2 or DS-A2X RI Dock on or off .
44 En Controlling Other Onkyo Components You can use the AV receiver’s remote controller to control your other Onkyo AV co mponents. This section explains how to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a com ponent that you wan t to control: DVD, CD, etc.
45 En You can reset a REMOTE MODE to its default remote control code. You can reset the remote controller to its defaul t settings. By pressing REMOTE MODE that’s been programmed with the remote control code for your component, y ou can control Onkyo component as below.
46 En Note • With some components, certain buttons may not work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : Available buttons *1 The p function is not su pported. The p supported by the AV receiver is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standard.
47 En Appendix Troubleshooting If you have any trouble using the AV receiver, look for a solution in this section. If you can’t resolve the issue yourself, contact y our Onkyo dealer.

50 En ■ The following setting s can be made for the composite video inputs You must use the buttons on the unit to make these settings. On the AV receiver, press the input selector for the input source that you want to set an d the SETUP button simultaneously.
51 En USB Features • USB mass storage device class (but not always guaranteed). • FAT16 or FAT32 file system format. • Each folder may contain up to 255 music files and folders, and folders may be nested up to 8 levels deep. • USB hubs and USB devices with hub functions are not supported.
52 En Connection Tips and Video Signal Path The AV receiver supports seve ral connection formats for compatibility with a wide range of AV equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your com ponents. Use the followi ng sections as a guide.
53 En About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demand s of digital TV, HDMI (Hi gh Definition Multimedia Inte rface) is a new digital interface standard for connecting TVs, projectors, Blu-ray Disc/DVD player s, set-top boxes, and other video components.
54 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV, Player, or Recorder p , which stands for Remote Interactive over HDMI, is the name of the system control function found on Onkyo components. The AV receiver can be us ed with CEC (Consumer Elect ronics Control), which al lows system control over HDMI and is part of the HDMI standa rd.
55 En ■ How to connec t and setup 1 Confirm the connecting and settin g. 1. Connect the HDMI OUT jack to the HDMI input jack of the TV. 2. Connect the audio output from the TV to the OPTICAL IN 2 jack of the AV receiver using an optical digital cable.
