Follo wing the inst ructions in this manual will enable you to obtain opti mum performance and listening enjoyment from your new CD/HDD recei ver.

3 Precautions 1. Recording Copyright —Unless it’ s for personal use only , recording cop yrighted material i s illegal with- out the permission of the copyright holder . 2. A C Fuse —The A C fuse inside the unit is not user- serviceable. If you cannot turn on the unit, contact your Onkyo dealer .
4 Precautions —Continued This unit contains a semiconductor laser system and is classified as a “CLASS 1 LASER PR ODUCT”. So, to use this model properly , read this Instruction Manual carefully . In case o f any tr ouble, please contact the store where you purchased the unit.

6 Bef ore Using the CD/HDD Receiver Notes: • If the remote cont roller doesn’t work reliably , try replac- ing the batterie s. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries or dif ferent types of bat- teries. • If you intend not to use the re mote controller for a long time, remov e the batteries to prev ent damage from leak- age or corrosion.

8 What Y ou Can Do wit h the CD/HDD Receive r —Continued The HDD is v ery sensitive t o physi cal shoc k, vibratio n, and dust. The CD/HDD receiv er is designed to protect the data safely from ph ysical shock, vi bration, and dust. Howev er , pay particular attention to the following points to prev ent the recorded data from being lost.

14 Getting to Know the CD/HDD Receiver —Continued Previous/Next [ 7 ]/[ 6 ] and PRESET [ e ]/[ r ] b uttons Used to select the previo us or next track or radio preset. Can also be used with an Onkyo RI Dock, CD recorder or MD recorder . With an Onk yo cas- sette deck, they work as f ast reve rse and fast for- ward b uttons.
15 Connections • Before making an y connect ions, read the manuals supplied with your other components. • Don’ t connect the power cord until you’ v e completed and double-checked all connections. Connection Color Coding RCA-type audio connections are usually color-coded: red and white.
16 Connections —Continued • Connect the right speaker to the CD/HDD receiver’ s right (R) SPEAKERS terminals. Connect the left speaker to the left (L) SPEAKERS terminals. • Connect the positi ve (+) terminal on each speak er to the corresponding positi ve (+) terminal o n the CD/HDD receiv er.
17 Connections —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and how to connect commercially a v ailable outdoor FM and AM anten nas. The CD/HDD receiv er won’t pick up any radio signals without an antenna connected , so you must connect th e antenna to use the tuner .
18 Connections —Continued Connecting an Outdoo r FM Antenna If you cannot achie ve good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a co mmercially a vailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, but usable results can sometimes be obta ined when installed in an attic or loft.
19 Connections —Continued The following diagram sh ows ho w to connect other components (i.e., a cassette deck, an MD recorder , a CD recorder) and an Onkyo RI Dock (Remote Interactiv e Dock). If Audyssey EQ™ is acti ve, you cannot perform recordin g (except for timer recording) to an external component.
20 Connections —Continued The CD/HDD receiv er has SUBWOOFER PRE OUT jack for c onnecting a powered acti ve su b woofer (i.e., a subwoofer with a b uilt-in amplif ier). The following diagram sho ws how to con nec t a component with an optical digital au dio output, such as a games console, satellite tuner , or personal computer .
21 Connections —Continued The CD/HDD recei ver is netw ork-ready , which means you can hook it up to your home network with a standard Internet and the Gracenote ® music recognition service is av ailable. Gracenote ® music recognition servic e is music CD database service constructed on servers located on the Internet.
22 T urning On the CD/HDD Receiver Tip : When you start playback on (or turn on) an Onkyo RI Dock, CD recorder , MD recorder , or cassette deck that’ s connected to the CD/HDD receiver with an u cable and analog audio cable, the CD/HDD recei ver turns on automatically .
23 Fir st Time Setup T o use the AccuClock function, the CD/HDD receiv er must be able to recei ve RDS radio stations, which means an FM antenna must be connected. Be sure to connect an FM antenna be fore attempting to use th is function (see page 17) .
24 Basic Operations Y ou can select HDD, CD, AM, FM, or a connected component (LINE 1, T APE, DOCK, USB or DIGIT A L) as the input source. On the CD/HDD receiver, press the [INPUT SELECT OR] bu tton repeatedly . The input sources are select ed in the following order .
25 Adjusting the T one Y ou can use the following b uttons on the re mote controller to adj ust the tone. Adjusting the Bass and T reble 1 Remote controller Press the [T ONE] button to select “B ASS:0”. 2 Use the Up and Down [ q ]/[ w ] b ut- tons to adjust the bass.
26 Using A ud ysse y EQ™ and A udysse y Dynamic EQ™ Audyssey EQ™ optimizes the audio quality set for the recommended Onkyo speake rs. The recommended speakers are D-112E and D- N10BX. W ith Audyssey EQ™ enabled, Audyssey Dynamic EQ™ becomes enabled b y default.
27 Operation of Music Data This section explains ho w the CD/HDD receiv er deals with the music data saved in the HDD and USB de vices. When copying (recording) or deleting music data, you must first press the [LIBRAR Y] b utton on the CD/HDD receiv er or remote controller to read the contents and d isplay the list.
28 Pla ying CDs The CD/HDD receiv er can playback A udio CDs and CD-R/R W (data CDs) in which MP3/WMA/AAC/W A V f iles are recorded. For the suppo rted formats, see page 70. T o pause playback: Press the remote controller's Pause [ 3 ] button or the CD/HDD receiv er’ s Play/P ause [ 1 / 3 ] button.

30 Playing CDs —Contin ued The CD/HDD recei ver init ially embeds the information on approximately 350,000 albu ms amo ng the CD data- base provided b y Gracenote ® music recognition ser- vice * . When an audio CD is set, the CD information is auto- matically searche d in the regi stered information.
31 Playing CDs —Continued W ith random playback, all of the tracks on the disc are played in random order . Cancelling Random Playback • T o cancel random playback, press the [RANDOM] button repeatedly until th e RANDOM indicator disap- pears. • Random playback is cancelled when turn off the CD/HDD receiv er.
32 Listening to the Radio The CD/HDD receiv er won’ t pick up an y radio signals without an antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner (see page 17). Adjusting the Antennas T uning into AM/FM Radio Stations 1 Press the [ENTER] repeatedly to select the tuning mode.
33 Listening to the Radio —Continued Press the r emote controller’ s [DISPLA Y] button repeat edly to display more radio inf ormation. RDS is only av ailable in areas where RDS br oadcasts are a vailable. What is RDS? RDS stands for Radio Data System and is a method of transmitting data in FM radi o signals.
34 Listening to the Radio —Continued W ith the Auto Preset function, you can automatically preset all of the FM radio stations a v ailable in your area in one go. Presets make it ea sy to select your favorite stations and e liminate the need t o tune the radio m anu- ally each time you w ant to change stations.
35 Listening to the Radio —Continued W ith the Preset Write function, you can manually preset individual AM and FM stations. Pres ets make it easy to select your fa vorite stations and eliminate the need to tune the radio manually each time you want to change stations.
36 Listening to the Radio —Continued Y ou must store some presets before you can select them (see pages 34 and 35). Y ou can also use the fr ont panel contr ols. 1 Use the [INPUT] but ton to select “AM” or “FM”. 2 T urn the MUL TI JOG dial to select a preset.
37 Listening to the Radio —Continued Using the two basic functions of copying and deletin g, you can copy a radio station preset to a channel to another channel, change a ch annel number, and delete an unnecessary channel. Copy ing Presets W ith the Preset Copy function, you can or ganize your presets in the order you want.
38 Listening to the Radio —Continued Erasing Presets 1 Select the preset you want to erase (see pag e 36). 2 Press the [T OOLS] button and then press [ENTER] with “T ool” selected. 3 Use the Up and Down [ q ]/[ w ] but- tons to select “Pr esetErase”, and then press [ENTER].
39 Listening to the Radio —Continued Naming Presets Y ou can name presets for easy identification using alpha- betic, numeric, marks and symbols. The preset name may contain up to eight characters.
40 Listening to the Radio —Continued Editing Character s If the character input mode is not currently selected, per- form steps 1 to 3 of “Naming Presets” on page 39. 1 Use the Left and Right [ e ]/[ r ] buttons to select a character to be changed or deleted.
41 USB De vice Pla ybac k The iPod ® , USB storage device, and digital audio player can be connected to the CD/HDD recei ver via USB, and the tracks on them can be played. Y ou can use the CD/HDD receiv er’ s remote controll er to carry out the basic operations.
42 USB Device Pla ybac k —Continued Removi ng the USB Devic e 1 Stop the playback and switch the input source to USB. 2 Hold down the Stop [ 2 ] button until “No USB” appears. 3 Disconnect the USB or USB cable from the CD/HDD r eceiver . Do not disconnect the USB cable until you see the “No USB” message.
43 USB Device Pla yback —Contin ued Y ou can switch the display b y pressing the remote con- troller’ s [DISPL A Y] button repeate dly . During the list display During stop During playback and pause Playing Sele cted T racks 1 Switch the input sour ce to USB.
44 USB Device Pla ybac k —Continued W ith random playback, the tracks recorded on the USB dev ice are played in random order . W ith repeat playback, you can play a group of tracks repeatedly or play one track repeatedly . See page 31 for details on repeat and random playback.
45 Pla ying External Components Connect the external components correctly . See “Con- necting Other Components” on page 19. By making an u (remote interacti ve) connection with an On kyo u -capabl.
46 Recor ding (T ransf erring Data) Y ou can record tracks into the CD/HDD receiv er’ s HDD (hard disk driv e). Also, you can transfer the music data stored in the CD/HDD receiver to your digita l audio play er and USB storage device, and make an FTP connection with your computer * .
47 Recording (T ransferring Data) —Contin ued Before starting the recording, set the format and bit ra te. Format is a data form of trac ks to be recorded. Bit rate means the quantity of information for recording. When the quantity of information increases, the sound quality becomes bett er , howe ver the data v olume becomes lar ger .
48 Recor ding (T ransferring Data) —Continued The CD/HDD receiv er can record audio CDs into its HDD at a speed of 4X Max. In addition, recording into the USB devices is av ailable. See “S etting for Recordi ng” on page 47 for setting before the operation.
49 Recording (T ransferring Data) —Contin ued Recor ding T rac ks One-by -one Y ou can select one trac k you want to record. Recording Using the Remote Contr oller Y ou can use the remote controller for recording as belo w . 1 Load the CD. When the CD has been loaded, switch the input source to CD.
50 Recor ding (T ransferring Data) —Continued Y ou ca n record broadcasting program. Tip : The title of the recorded progr am is automatically consists of date, start time of recording, radio station name (its band and frequency if it is n ot preset).
51 Recording (T ransferring Data) —Contin ued USB Connecti on The CD/HDD receiv er can transfer the data between its HDD (hard disk driv e) and your USB device (digital audio player or USB storage de vice).
52 Recor ding (T ransferring Data) —Continued FTP Connectio n V ia FTP connection, you can access the CD/HDD receiv er from your computer and transfer the data from the HDD to computer and vice versa. * Only for pe rsonal compu ters with Mic rosoft Windows XP Ser- vice Pack 2, Servi ce Pack 3, or Micros oft Windo ws V ista installed.
53 Recording (T ransferring Data) —Contin ued The CD/HDD recei ver can erase the music track or album stored on the USB de vice. For erasing music track or album from HDD, see “Erasing Music T rack or Album” on page 58. Also see “Operation of Music Data ” on page 27.
54 Pla ying the HDD Basic Operations of Pl aybac k 1 CD/HDD receiver Start playback. Press the Play/P ause [ 1 / 3 ] button or Pla y [ 1 ] button. The track you played or recorded the last time is played.
55 Playing the HDD —Contin ued Among enormous recorded music f iles in the HDD of the CD/HDD receiv er, you can easily search the desired one by artist name , album name, titl e, or playlist. Using Alphabetic Searc h During the list display , you can search tracks in the alphabetic order by p ressing the remote controller’ s number buttons.

61 Editing T racks and Pla ylists in the HDD —Continued Although a playlist is initially named as PlayList 1, Play- List 2…, PlayList 23, the name can be chang ed as you like.
62 Setting the Cloc k The AccuClock function normally uses the FM st ation with the strongest signal to set the clock. Ho wev er , if the clock cannot be set properly using th at station, you can specify wh ich FM station the AccuCloc k function should use.
63 Setting the Clock —Contin ued The time can be displa yed in 24-hour format. Tip : T o cancel the clock setting, press the [RETURN] button repeatedly . Displa ying the Da y and Time T o display the day and time, pr ess the remote con troller’ s [CLOCK CALL] button.
64 Using the Timer s The CD/HDD recei ver has three timers: the sleep timer for turning the CD/HDD receiv er of f after a specified period, the play timer for automated playback, and the record timer for automated recording. Up to four programmable tim ers are av ailable for the play and record timers.
65 Using the Timers —Contin ued W ith the play timer , you can au tomatically turn on the CD/HDD recei ver , start playback, and turn of f the CD/ HDD recei ver at a specif ied time. This time r is con ve- nient to use as a morning alarm . Before setting the timer: • Y ou must set the clock before you can set the timers ( page 62 ).
66 Using the Timers —Contin ued W ith the record timer , you can automatically turn on the CD/HDD receiv er, start recording, and turn of f the CD/ HDD receiv er at a specif ied time. This timer is con ve- nient when you want to reco rd music or programs while you are out, or record late-n ight broadcasting programs.
67 Using the Timers —Contin ued Canceling a Runnin g Play/Recor d Timer The play or record timer can be canceled during a pro- cess of timer playback or t imer recording , without stop- ping the playback or recording. 1 Press the [TIMER] b utton. 2 Select the ti mer you want to cancel, and then press the [ENTER].
68 Adv anced Setup When your computer cannot be connected to the Internet, or you wa nt to set the IP address manually , set the follo wing network conf iguration. When setting it manually , input the values (alphanumeric ch aracters) according to the sett ing of your broadband router currently in use.
69 Adv anced Setup —Contin ued Entering DHCP Sett ings Manuall y Y ou can enter DHCP settings such as the IP address, sub- net mask, d efault gate way , or DNS server man ually . Fol- low these steps when you w ant to assign the fix ed IP address for network connection, or to assign the DNS server address specif ied by y our ISP .
70 Disc Notes Supported Discs The CD/HDD recei ver supports the follo wing discs (8 cm and 12 cm). Notes: • The CD/HDD receiv er does not play discs that have not been f inalized. • The playback may not be possible depending on the disc characteristics or recording state of a CD-R/CD-R W disc.
71 Disc Notes —Contin ued Handling Discs • Ne ver touch the underside of a disc. Al ways hold discs by the edge, as shown. • Nev er attach adhesive tape or stick y labels, or write letters ev en on the label si de, much less on the under- side. • Nev er scratch the CD surfaces.
72 Pla y able Formats Supported Formats The CD/HDD recei ver supports the follo wing formats for playback. WAV: ( *. w a v ) WMA: (*.wma) MP3: (*.mp3) AA C: (*.m4a) • The playab le format for the iPod is determined in accordance with the specif ications of the iPod.
73 Contr olling External Components Explanation of buttons f or using the Onkyo MD recorder , cassette deck, CD recorder , or RI Dock, when con- nected to the MD/T APE jack, DOCK/CDR jack or DIGIT AL IN jack of the CD/HDD receiver. • See page 19 for instructions on connecting the components.
74 T r oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using the CD/HDD receiver, look for a solution in this section. Can’t turn on the CD/HDD receiver. • Make sure that the power cord is properly plugged into the w all outlet (see page 22). • Unplug the po wer cord from the wall outlet, wait 5 seconds or more, then plug it in again.
75 T roubl eshooting —Continued Audio output is intermittent when the CD/HDD receiv er is subjected to vibration. • The CD/HDD recei ver is not a portable device. Use it in a location that’ s not subject to shock or vibration. Headphone ou tput is intermi ttent or there’ s no sound.
76 T roubleshooting —Continued Noise or skip occ urs during playback / Disc is not recognized and “NO DISC” is display ed / First track is not play ed / Music scan takes long er time than usual .
77 T roubl eshooting —Continued Timer playback or recording doesn’t work. • Make sure the clock has been set correctly (see page 62). • The timer may ov erlap with another timer . If you program se veral timers, make sure they don’t ov erlap (see page 64).
78 T roubleshooting —Continued T rack number or playlist n umber is not displayed correctly . • The number of tracks or the playlists is 1,000 or more, “- - -” is displayed. Not operate normally . • If the CD/HDD recei ver is af fected by static electricity or the li ke, it may operate abnormally .
