GB - 5 1. DANGER! TO A VOID SERIOUS INJUR Y OR DEA TH Read Owner/O perator Manual. Keep children and others away from unit while o perating. Never direct discharge toward other people. Thrown objects can cause injury . Remove objects that could be thrown by the blade.
GB - 6 Shut off engine, remove key , read manual before you adjust or repair unit. NO STEP! A lways keep feet away from rotating part s . 3. W ARNING! Do not operate mower unless guards are in operating position or bagger is attached. Always stand clear of discharge area.
GB - 7 Inspect unit before e ach use for: missing or damaged deca ls and shields, co rrectly operating safety inte rlock system, and deterioration of grass catchers. Replace or repair as needed. AL WA YS check overhead and side clearances carefully bef ore operation.
GB - 8 Always stand clear of t he discharge area. AL WA YS disengage PTO, stop unit and engine, remove key , engage parking brake and allow moving parts to stop bef ore leaving operator ’s position. Never engage PTO while r aising attachment or when att achment is in raised position.
GB - 9 Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or container opening at al l times until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozz le lock- open device. If fuel is spilled on clothing, change clothing immediately . Avoid Electric Shock. Objects cont acting both battery terminals at the same time may result in injury and unit damage.
GB - 10 UNIT ASSEMB LY Package C ontent s: Unit, Mower Deck and Literature Pack Prepara tio n Ch ec kli st Refer to the Owner /Operator manual as required. 1. U npack Unit - Remove shrink wrap and packaging materials. 2. R emove Unit From Container - Open Bypass V alves (dump valves) (See Moving the Unit with the Engine Off on page 16).
GB - 11 10. Check Safety Interlock Sys tem - Check to see that the interlock system operates correctly (See Safety In t erlock Sy st em on page 12). 1 1. Lubrication - Lubricat e all fittings per maintenance label under sea t and check hydrostat oil level (S ee Lubricate Unit on page 22).
GB - 12 CONTROLS AND FEATURES See Figure 4 for Controls and Features locations. Safety Interlock Syste m Perform the f ollowing tests to ensure the safety interlock system is working properly . If the unit does not perform as stat ed, contact your Ariens dealer for repairs.
GB - 13 Throttle Lever The throttle lever changes the engine speed. Move the throttle lever to F ast (1) to increase engine speed. Move the lever to Slow (2) to decrease engine speed. Bypass Valve Leve r Pull the lever back to set the pump in n eutral and move the unit with t he engine off.
GB - 14 The alert starts counting down tw o hours before the maintenance is due. The met er flashes the word, "Now ," when it reaches the maintenance time. Press and hold the toggle button to reset the maintenance clock to zero after perf oming the service.
GB - 15 Fuel S tabilizer Gasoline left in the fuel sy stem for ext ended periods without a stabilizer w ill deteriorate, resulting in gum deposits in the system .
GB - 16 3. B ring the steering lever s to neutral. 4. S low the engine down to about 3/4 speed. 5. Turn ON th e PTO switch to engage the mowe r . IMPORT ANT : Never en gage the PTO if the mower is plugged w ith grass or other material. This may cause damage to the electric clutch.
GB - 17 Proper maintenance can prolong the life of unit. The following charts show t he recommended serv ice schedule. More frequent service may be required due to working conditions (heav y loads, high ambient temperatures, dusty c onditions, or airborne debris).
GB - 18 Ari en s Dealers will provi de an y servic e whic h ma y be required t o keep your unit operating at peak efficiency . Should engine serv ice be required, it can be obt ained from a Ariens Dealer or the en gine manufacturer ’s authorized service cent er .
GB - 19 HYDRAULIC FLUID Check Hydra ulic Fluid Leve l Check the system with the unit cold and parked on a flat, level surface. Then run the unit for about one minute and recheck th e levels. T o Add Hydraul ic Fluid: 1. Remove the cap from the expansion tank.
GB - 20 7. F ill with 20W-50 engine oil with an SL API classification until oil appears at the bottom of the drain plug (about 2 quart s per transaxle). Install the drain plug and tighten it to 180 l bf-in (20.3 N•m). 8. R epeat steps 1–7 for the other transaxle.
GB - 21 Sharpen the Mower Blade s 1. R emove m ower blade from unit. Discard mower blade if: • More than 1/2 in. (1.27 cm) of metal is removed. • Air lift s become eroded. • Blade is bent or bro ken. 2. S harpen mowe r blade by removing an equal amount of mat erial from each end of mower blade.
GB - 22 1. R emove bat tery from unit. See Remove Batt ery on page 2 1. 2. C lean terminals and battery cable ends with wire brus h. 3. C oat terminals w ith dielectric grease or petroleum jelly .
GB - 23 4. Start t he engine, run engine at full throttle, and release the parking brake. 5. M ove the steering levers from Forward to Revers e several t imes to m ake sure controls are free. Then return steering levers to neutral position. 6. C heck wheel(s) for movem ent.
GB - 24 ADJUSTING THE UNIT TO T RACK STRAIGHT Check and adjust tire pressure. I ncrease pressure on side unit tracks to. DO NOT exceed ma ximum recomm ended tire pressure (See Specifications on page 31). If tire pressure adjustment does not solve tracking problem, adjust the limiter bolt s on the stop bracket (Figure 15).
GB - 25 Check Adjustment NOTE: Be sure to check the parking brake on both sides of t he unit (Figure 17). 1. E ngage parking brake and set both transmission bypass valves to the neutral position. See Moving the Unit with the Engine Off on p age 16. 2.
GB - 26 4. R emove shor t mower belt from right blade spindle and from deck. Idler pivot bolt must be loosened slightly to gain clearance to remove belt from under idler pulley (Figure 19). 5. A rrange new mower belt(s) on deck (short belt first ). Retighten short m ower belt idler pivot bolt.
GB - 27 MOWER DECKS Anti-scalp Ro ller Adjustment The anti-scalp rollers are set at the factory for typical mowing height, but c an be adjusted for high or low cutting c onditions (Figure 22) . Anti-Scalp rollers are intended to prevent lawn scalping, not t o control cutting height.
GB - 28 Inst alling the Mower Deck (Fig ure 23) 1. S l ide mower deck under unit. 2. C onnect mower mounting arms to deck with mower mounting pins. 3. I nstall link chains on the m ower lift arms in the same holes they were removed from. 4. I nstall PTO mower belt (See Replacing Mower Belts on page 25).
GB - 29 Adjust Bl ade Heigh t Level and pitch the mower wit h the height adjusters on eac h deck lift bracket (Figure 25). Loosen the jam nut on the deck lift bracket bo lt about 1/4 turn to reduce clamp load on the height adjusters.
GB - 30 SHORT TERM NEVER spray unit with high-pressure water or store unit outdoors. Inspect unit for v isible signs of wear, breakage or damag e. Keep all nuts, bolts and screws properly tightened and know unit is in safe working condition. S t ore unit in a c ool, dry protected area.
