3 HARD W ARE CONNECTIONS The KB5000 can be connected to an IBM101 PC , XT , A T or clone computer , PS/2 computer , or computer ter minal. The following diagr am shows how the KB5000 connects to the computer and standard k ey- board or other ke yboard per ipheral (magnetic stripe reader , scanner , etc.
4 2. Connect the 5 pin DIN connector of the interface cable into the 5 pin DIN of the A T -to-PS/2 adapter . 3. Plug the PS/2 connector of the adapter into the computer’ s ke yboard por t . 4. Connect the PS/2 ke yboard into J1 of the KB5000. NO TE 1: J5 and J6 are not used in this configuration.
5 FUNCTIONAL TEST F or testing pur poses, y our KB5000 ke yboard was pre-prog rammed with a template called KB5000.tpl . Shown at the end of this section is the KB5000 ke yboard with the pre-progr ammed inf or mation f or each ke y . The f ollowing simple steps will v er ify that the KB5000 is in good working condition: 1.

7 UTILITY DISK CONTENTS All KB5000 ke yboards come with a utility software disk. This disk contains sev eral impor tant files: KB5D.EXE - Use this utility with or without the k e yboard being attached .
7 INS T ALLING THE KB5D.EXE UTILITY P R OGRAM The first step in using the KB5.EXE utility prog r am is to co p y the program to y our hard drive . 1 . Inse r t the KB 5 utility soft w are into d r i v e A or B . 2 . T ype MD KB 5 at the “C>“ prompt to ma k e a directo r y named KB 5 .

10 PR OGRAMMING THE KB5000 KEYBO ARD The f ollowing procedure will show y ou how to program the KB5000 with standard (k eyboard) alphanumeric characters. The k eyboard can be programmed with either ASCII or Scan code inf ormation. The def ault mode is the ASCII code mode.
11 5. T ype S to sa v e the prog rammed data into the KB5 directory . Y ou can select up to an 8 character name. It will be saved with a .TPL extension. 6. Press ESC to ter minate the Data T ransfer Menu. 7. Press F10 f ollowed b y Y to exit the utility program.
AD V ANCED PROGRAMMING The KB5000 POS keyboard can be programmed with all special control and function keys such as the Shift, Ctrl, Alt, F1 through F12, and the up/down/ left/right arrow k e ys. The procedure to program these special ke ys is show n below: 1.
SPECIAL FEA TURES OF THE KB5000 Besides being able to program all the keys of an IBM101 keyboard, the KB5000 has also incor porated three state-of-the-ar t f eatures which will add fle xibility and functionality to the ke yboard.
MUL TI-LEVEL DEFINITION This f eature can increase the apparent number of programmab le key s by allowing y ou to program diff erent le vels into an y cell. For e v er y diff erent le vel y ou program y ou must select another ke y to be a “SHIFT LEVEL ” k ey .
8. Change the programming mode of this cell to the scan-code mode ( F8 ). Depress and hold the AL T ke y while depressing the letter A twice. T wo triangles inside brack ets will appear on the progr amming line. 9. T o use this feature in y our application is e xtremely simple.
SELF PROGRAMMING T o use this feature the KB5 director y must be added to the path statement of the A UT OEXEC.BA T file. This feature is e xtremely helpful f or applications where the ke yboard files are changing on a regular basis. A programming location m ust be reser ved on each k eyboard in order to perf or m the self programming function.
SPECIAL CONFIGURA TIONS The KB5000 can be set up with many diff erent programming options. T o activ ate the configuration menu screen the KB5 progr am must first be placed into the e xtended men u ( Ctrl, Alt, F4 ). Press F3 to open the configuration screen.
DESCRIPTION OF SPECIAL CONFIGURA TION MENU F3 Send Break-code for scan-codes - Enables or disab les the tr ansmission of break codes f or each scan code programmed into the k eyboard. Enable beep while a ke y pressed - Enab les or disables the entire k e yboard from beeping when any k ey is depressed.
DESCRIPTION OF SPECIAL CONFIGURA TION MENU F3 (CONTINUED) Enable RS232 Output - Enab les or disab les the output of the k e yboard to the RS232 por t (DB9 connector). If this option is set to YES then the protocol settings must be set to mirror the application software .
The KB5000 ke yboard, wor king in conjunction with the KB5.EXE utility software , can perf or m the follo wing powerful functions: * Sav e programmed data as a template file (.TPL) in both the k eyboard and the hard drive of the computer . T o sav e programmed data to the ke yboard use the W (Write to ke yboard) option of the Data T ransf er Menu.
