Installing the Switch Fast Ethernet Considerations If you will be using the Switch for F ast Ether net (100Mbps) applications, you must observe the follo wing guidelines: Full-Duplex Considerations As previousl y mentioned , the Switch pro vides full-duplex support for its RJ- 45 ports.

Switch Management The Switch offers an easy-to-use, menu-dri ven console interface. Using this interface, you can perform various s witch conf iguration and management activities, including: • Conf .
Configuring the Switch The Switch features a menu-driv en console interface for switch conf igura- tion. The Switch can be conf igured locally through the console port using ter- minal emulation software, such as Hyperterminal, or remotely via a T elnet connection.
• General allo ws you to change the system name, contact, location, admin- istration and guest passw ords, statistics collection, reboot-on-er ror , remote T elnet login, and remote HTTP lo gin. • LAN P ort allo ws you to conf igure line speed and flow control, Admin Control, and view the ph ysical address of the Switch.
Changing the Administration P assw ord 1. Use the Down Arr o w key to highlight admin P asswor d and press the Enter key . The Enter Old P asswor d screen will appear . 2. Enter the cur rent passw ord. Each character you type appears as an aster- isk (*).
2. Enter a new guest pass w ord. If you make a mistake, use the Backspace key to delete the error . The passw ord is case-sensitiv e, can be no more than 16 characters (only alphanumeric characters and the underscore “_” character can be used). 3.

Enab ling or Disab ling Modem Control Options 1. From the Console P ort Conf igurations screen, highlight Modem Contr ol and press the Enter key . A screen similar to the follo wing will sho w whether a console modem connection is enab led or disabled.

Cr eating a New VLAN 1. From the VLAN P erspective screen in, hold do wn the Shift key and press the “ + ” key . The New VLAN Settings screen will appear . . 2. W ith the VLAN ID f ield highlighted , press the Enter key . The Enter New VLAN ID screen will appear .
If you highlight T ag ged P orts , the screen window reads Select T agg ed P orts , as in the follo wing screen. 3. In the Select Untag ged P orts or Select T agg ed P orts screen, use the Up Arr o w and Do wn Arr o w ke ys to highlight an individual port.
V iewing VLAN Activities The follo wing procedure describes how to use the VLAN P erspective screen to view acti vities for a particular VLAN . Using this procedure, you can vie w: • Activ e por ts. • Activ e MAC addresses associated with a VLAN. • A transient address, if any .
Exiting the VLAN Screens When you f inish perfor ming VLAN activities, press the Esc ke y until you return to the desired screen. V iewing VLAN Settings Using the VLAN Conf igur ation screen, you can vie w VLAN settings. 1. From the VLAN P erspective screen, highlight an existing VLAN and press the Enter ke y .
T o select tagged por ts: • Highlight T agged P orts and press Enter . The Select T agged P orts screen will appear , along with a list of the tagged por ts. • T o select an individual port, highlight it and press Enter . An asterisk will appear next to each port you select (to deselect it, press Enter again to remo ve the asterisk).
IP MUL TICAST GR OUP PERSPECTIVE The IP multicast group perspective pro vides infor mation associated with an IP multicast group. Use the following procedure to obtain an IP multicast group perspective (prior to this process, set the IGMP in the Other Pr otocols section, step 2.

ARP T ABLE SETTINGS If you select ARP T ab le from the IP Networ king screen, an ARP T ab le screen similar to the follo wing will appear with the ARP table entries that ha ve already been def ined or learned. From this screen, y ou are able to: • Add static entries to the ARP table.
Deleting Static ARP T ab le Entries If you no longer need a static entry in the ARP table, use the follo wing procedure to delete it. Since there is no precautionary message that appears before you delete a static ARP table entry , be sure you w ant to delete the entry before you begin.
Pr otocol Indicates one of the follo wing: Local A manually conf igured routing entr y . NetMgmt A routing entry set via SNMP . ICMP A routing entry obtained via ICMP redirect. RIP A routing entry lear ned via the RIP protocol. Other A protocol other than one of the other four listed abo ve.
Sear ching for Routing T able Entries Use the follo wing procedure to search for entries in the Routing T ab le: 1. From the Routing T ab le screen, press the “ S ” key . The Enter Networ k Addr ess screen will appear . 2. T ype the netw ork address you w ant to search for , then press Enter .

PING SETTINGS If you select Ping from the IP Networking screen, a Ping screen similar to the follo wing will appear, with the Host f ield highlighted. Use the follo wing procedure to change the ping settings: 1. Press Enter . The Enter IP Addr ess screen will appear .
BRIDGING If you select Bridging from the Advanced Manag ement screen, the follo wing Bridging P ar ameters screen will appear . 1. T o change the aging time, highlight Aging Time <seconds> and press Enter . The follo wing prompt will ask you to enter a bridge aging period , in seconds.
From each of these screens, y ou are able to: • Hold do wn the Shift key and press the “ + ” ke y to add a specif ic MAC address to be f iltered.
65 ProConnect II ® Series Use the follo wing procedure to modify the selections shown: 1. W ith the Spanning T r ee Protocol f ield highlighted , press Enter . The fol- lo wing choices will appear (see next page). 2. Select either Disab led or Enab led and press Enter .
Spanning T ree P ath Costs Highlight Spanning T r ee P ath Costs in the Spanning T r ee Pr otocol screen and press the Enter key . A Spanning T r ee P ath Costs screen similar to the follow- ing will appear . Use the follo wing procedure to change the costs in the Spanning T r ee P ath Costs screen: 1.
SNMP FUNCTIONS If you select SNMP from the Advanced Manag ement screen, the follo wing SNMP Conf igur ations screen will appear , with the SNMP value highlighted.
11. T ype an IP address for trap host 1. The address consists of numbers sepa- rated by periods (e.g., 129.32.0.11). 12. Press Enter . The IP address you typed will appear next to T r ap Host 1 IP Addr ess . 13. T o specify up to two additional trap community names, repeat steps 10 through 12.
Stacking Basic Setting enables y ou to set stack ID , stack size, and stack por t. Stack IP Settings lets you to set the IP address of the stack ed switches. Stack P or t Mapping sho ws infor mation about all por ts. Stacking Basic Setting Select Stack Basic Settings from the Stacking screen and press the Enter key .
Press the ESC key . The selected por t will appear in the Stack P ort f ield. 6. Use Up or Do wn ar row k ey to highlight the Stacking f ield. Press the Enter key and the Stack Options will appear . Highlight Enabled and press the Enter key . 7. Repeat step 1~5 to conf igure other switches to be stack ed.
77 ProConnect II ® Series O THER PRO TOCOLS Highlight Other Pr otocols from the Advanced Management screen and press the Enter ke y . The Other Pr otocol Settings screen will appear , with the GVRP value highlighted. 1. T o change the GVRP setting, press Enter with GVRP highlighted.
79 ProConnect II ® Series 3. Highlight the range of ports you want to associate with the trunk group, then press Enter . The por t range appears next to the selected trunk g roup, as in the follo wing screen. 4. F or each trunk por t you want to select, highlight it and press Enter .

W ell-Kno wn P ort T o set w ell-kno wn por t settings: 1. From the Lo gical P or t menu, highlight W ell-Kno wn P or t and press the Enter key . The W ell-Kno wn Port Index menu appears.
5. T o change the transmit priority setting, press the Do wn Ar row k ey to highlight T ransmit Priority , then press the Enter ke y . When the Transmit Priority screen appears, highlight the desired priority and press the Enter key . Y our selection appears next to T ransmit Priority .
6. Highlight the desired transmit priority , then press the Enter key . The trans- mit priority you selected appears ne xt to T ransmit Priority . 7. Press the Esc key to return to the VLAN Priority Index screen. 8. T o specify other VLAN priority settings, repeat steps 2 through 7.
2. P erfor m one of the follo wing steps: • T o specify a megabit prof ile that is used by a 10/100 Megabit port, refer to "Megabit Prof ile". • T o specify a gigabit prof ile that is used by a Gigabit port, refer to "Gigabit Prof iles".
Note P or ts Using This Prof ile, Strict Priority , Delay Sensiti ve Application, and Prof ile Status are all read-only parameters that cannot be changed. 6. T o change the setting for QoS flo w control setting, press the Down Ar row key to select QoS with Flo w Control and press the Enter key .
Specifying the P ort Conf iguration T o specify por t conf iguration parameters: 1. From the QoS screen, use the Do wn Arrow ke y to highlight Port Conf iguration, and then press the Enter key . The Port Conf iguration screen appears. Note P or ts 1 through 24 are 10/100 Megabit ports, while ports 25 and 26 are Gigabit ports.
2. Use the Do wn Ar row k ey to highlight Rate Control and press the Enter key . The Rate Control Status screen appears. 3. Highlight the desired setting, then press the Enter key . Y our selection appears next to Rate Control in the Rate Control screen.

Br oadband - A data-transmission scheme in which multiple signals share the bandwidth of a medium. This allo ws the transmission of voice, data and video signals o ver a single medium. Cable tele vision uses broadband techniques to deliv er dozens of channels o ver one cable.
DHCP supports static addresses for computers containing W eb ser vers that need a permanent IP address. DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) - Allo ws one IP address (or computer) to be exposed to the Internet. Some applications require multiple TCP/IP por ts to be open.

SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) - A f irew all technology that monitors the state of the transaction so that it can verify that the destination of an inbound packet matches the source of a pre vious outbound request.
Upgrade - T o replace existing softw are or f ir mware with a ne wer v ersion. Upload - T o transmit a f ile o ver a netw ork. In a communications session, upload means transmit, do wnload means receive. UTP - Unshielded twisted pair is the most common kind of copper telephone wiring.
