Chapter 1. About this manual This manual contains service and refer ence information for ThinkCentr e® comput er machine types listed on the fr ont cover . This manual is int ended only for trained Service P roviders who ar e familiar with Lenovo® computer pr oducts.
Note: RoHS and non-RoHS FRU part numbers with the same t and function are identied with unique FRU part numbers. Lenovo plans to tr ansition t o RoHS compliance well befor e the implementation date and expects its suppliers to be ready to support Lenovo's requir ements and schedule in the EU .
Chapter 2. Safety information This chapter contains the safety information that you need t o be familiar with befor e servicing a computer . General safety F ollow these rules to ensur e gener al safety: • Observe good housekeeping in the area of the machines during and after maintenance.
Important: Use only appr oved t ools and t est equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulate you when working with live electrical curr ents. Many customers have, near their equipment, rubber oor mats that contain small conductive bers to decrease electr ostatic dischar ges.
V oltage-selection switch Some computers ar e equipped with a voltage-selection switch located near the power -cord connection point on the computer . If your comput er has a voltage-selection switch, ensur e that you set the switch t o match the voltage available at your electrical outlet.
5. Check for any obvious alter ations. Use good judgment as t o the safety of any alter ations. 6. Check inside the unit for any obvious unsafe conditions, such as metal lings, contamination, water or other liquids, or signs of r e or smoke damage.

Chapter 4. Gener al check out Attention The drives in the comput er you ar e servicing might have been rearr anged or the drive startup sequence might has been changed. Be e xtremely car eful during writ e oper ations such as copying, saving, or formatting.
4. V erify that you are using a working ac power outlet. Plug another device into the outlet or contact the power company or supplier to verify that the outlet is working correctly . 5. Check the power cor d continuity . 6. Replace the ac/dc power adapter .

Chapter 5. Diagnostics Diagnostic progr ams are used to t est hardwar e components of your computer and report operating-syst em-controlled settings that can cause har dware failures.
PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery The PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery diagnostic pr ogram is part of the Rescue and Recovery workspace on each L enovo computer . Use the PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery pr ogram if you ar e unable t o start the Windows oper ating system.
Note: Y ou can insert the disc into the optical drive when you are setting the startup device sequence. However , if you insert the disc into the optical drive when you have alr eady ent ered the oper ating system, you need to restart the comput er t o access the diagnostic pr ogram.
• ChkDigits: Contains a 2-digit check-digit value to ensure the following: – Diagnostics wer e run on the specied dat e. – Diagnostics wer e run on the specied computer . – The diagnostic err or code is recor ded corr ectly . • T ext: Description of the err or .
Chapter 6. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility pr ogram is used t o view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , r egardless of which oper ating system you are using. However , the operating syst em settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility pr ogram.
Set User P assword After you have set a user passwor d using the Set User P assword option, the user is pr ompted to type a valid password each time the computer is turned on.
Selecting a startup device If your computer does not start up fr om a device such as the hard disk drive or the disc in the optical drive as expect ed, do one of the following to select the startup device you want. Selecting a temporary startup device Use this pr ocedure t o start up from any startup device.

1. Remove any media from the drives. Then, turn off all attached devices and the computer . 2. Disconnect all power cor ds fr om electrical outlets. 3. Disconnect the power cor ds, Input/Output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that are connected to the computer .
