1 - 1 1 Getting Star ted About This Manual This User’ s Guide provides installa tion and programming instructions f o r the V oy ager™ 1400g area- imaging scanner . Product specifications, dimen- sions, wa rranty , and customer suppor t information are also included.

1 - 4 Connecting with RS232 Serial P or t 1. Turn off power to the terminal/computer. 2. Connect the appropriate interface cable to the scanner. Note: For the scanner to work properly , you must have the correct cable for your type of terminal/computer.
1 - 5 Connecting with RS485 A scanner or cordless base can be connected fo r an IBM POS terminal interf ace. 1. Connect the appropriate interface ca ble to the device, then to the com- puter. 2. Turn the terminal/computer powe r back on. The scanner beeps.
1 - 6 Reading T echniques The scanner has a view finder that projects a bright red aiming beam that corre- sponds to the scanner’ s hor izontal fiel d of vie w . The aiming beam should be centered ov er the bar code, but it can be positioned in any direction f or a good read.
1 - 7 Setting Custom Defaults Y ou hav e the ability to create a set of menu commands as your o wn, custom def aults. T o do so , scan the Set Custom Defaults bar code below bef ore scannning the menu commands f or your custom defaults .
1 - 8 Resetting the F actory Defaults If you aren’t sure what prog ramming opt ions are in your scanner , or you’ve changed some options and want to restore the scanner to f actor y default set- tings, first scan the Remo ve Custom Defaults bar code, then scan Activate Defaults .
2 - 1 2 Pr ogramming the Interface Intr oduction This chapter describes how to program y our system for the desired interf ace. Pr ogramming the Interface - Plug and Pla y Plug and Pla y bar codes provide in stant scanner set up f or commonly used interf aces.
2 - 2 RS232 Serial P or t The RS232 Interface bar code is used when connectin g to the serial por t of a PC or terminal. The following RS232 Interface bar code also progr ams a car- riage retur n (CR) and a line feed (LF) su ffix, baud r ate, and data f or mat as indi- cated below .
2 - 3 Each bar code abov e also programs th e follo wing suffixes f o r each symbology: * Suffixes programmed for Code 128 with IBM 4683 Port 5B, IBM 4683 Port 9B HHBCR-1, and IBM 4683 Port 17 Interfa.
2 - 4 USB IBM SureP os Scan one of the f ollowing “Plug and Pla y ” codes to program the scanner fo r an IBM SureP os (USB handheld scanner) or IBM SureP os (USB tabletop scanner) interf ace. Note: After scanning one of these code s, you must power cycle the cash register.
2 - 5 USB HID Scan the f ollowing code to progr am th e scanner fo r USB HID bar code scan- ners. USB Serial Scan the f ollowing code to progr am th e scanner to emulate a regular RS232- based COM P or t. 2 - 6 V erifone ® Rub y T erminal Default Settings Scan the f ollowing Plug and Pla y code to program the scanner for a V erifone Ruby terminal. This bar code sets the baud rate to 1200 bps and the data f or- mat to 8 data bits, no parity bit, 1 stop bi t.
2 - 7 Honeywell Bioptic A ux P or t Configuration Scan the f ollowing Plug and Pla y code to program the scanner f or a Honeyw ell bioptic scanner auxiliar y por t configuration. This bar code sets the baud rate to 38400 bps and the data f ormat to 8 data bits, no parity , 1 stop bit.
2 - 8 Wincor Nixdorf T erminal Default Settings Scan the f ollowing Plug and Pla y code to program the scanner for a Wincor Nix- dorf terminal. This bar code sets the b aud rate to 9600 bps and the data format to 8 data bits, no parity , 1 stop bit.

2 - 16 Regular is used when you normally hav e the Caps Lock ke y off. Caps Lock is used when you normally hav e the Caps Lock ke y on. Shift Lock is used when you normally hav e the Shift Lock ke y on (not common to U .S. ke yboards). A utomatic Caps Lock is used if y ou change the Caps Lock ke y on and off .
2 - 17 Emulate External K eyboar d should be scanned if you do not hav e an external ke yboard (IBM A T or equivalent). Note: After scanning the Emulate External Keyboard bar code, you must power cycle your computer. Ke yboard Con version Alphabetic ke yboard characters can be forced to be all upper case or all lo wer- case.
2 - 18 Def ault = Off. Ke yboard Modifier s This modifies special ke yboard feat ures, such as CTRL+ ASCII codes and T urbo Mode. Control + ASCII Mode On: The scanner sends ke y co mbinations for ASCII control characters f or values 00-1F . Windo ws is the preferred mode.
2 - 19 T urbo Mode: The scanner sends characters to a te rminal faster . If the ter minal drops characters, do not use T urbo Mode. Def ault = Off Numeric Ke ypad Mode: Sends numeric characters as if entered from a numeric ke ypad.
2 - 20 RS232 Baud Rate Baud Rate sends the data from the scanner to the terminal at the specified rate. The host terminal must be set for the same baud rate as the scanner .
2 - 21 RS232 W ord Length: Data Bits, Stop Bits, and P arity Data Bits sets the word length at 7 or 8 bits of data per character . If an applica- tion requires only ASCII He x characters 0 through 7F decimal (te xt, digits, and punctuation), select 7 data bits.
2 - 22 RS232 Receiver Time-Out The unit sta ys aw ake to receiv e data until the RS232 Re ceiver Time-Out e xpires. A manual trigge r resets the time-out. Whe n an RS232 receiver is sleeping, a character ma y be sent to wa ke up the receiv er and reset the time- out.
2 - 23 RS232 Timeout When using Flow Control with Timeout, y ou must program the length of the dela y you w ant to wait f or CTS from th e host. Set the length (in millisec- onds) f or a timeout by sc.
2 - 24 the scanner waits for ACK/NAK again. T ur n on the ACK/NAK protocol b y scanning the A CK/NAK On bar code below . T o turn off the protocol, scan A CK/NAK Off . Def ault = A CK/NAK Off . Scanner to Bioptic Comm unication The f ollowing settings are used to set up communication betw een Honeyw ell scanners and bioptic scanners.
2 - 25 Scanner -Bioptic A CK/NAK Mode Bioptic A CK/Nak On must be scanned so the sc anner will wait f or an ACK or NAK from a bioptic scanner afte r each pack et is sent. The Scanner- Bioptic A CK/NAK Timeout (below) cont rols ho w long the scanner will wait fo r a r e s p o n s e.

3 - 1 3 Input/Output Settings P ower Up Beeper The scanner can be programmed to beep when it’ s powered up . Scan the Off bar code(s) if you don’t w ant a power up beep . Def ault = P ower Up Beeper On - Scanner . Beep on BEL Character Y ou ma y wish to f orce the scanner to beep upon a command sent from the host.
3 - 2 Good Read and Err or Indicators Beeper – Good Read The beeper ma y be programmed On or Off in response to a good read. T ur ning this option off, only turns o ff the beeper response to a good read indication. All error and me nu beeps are still audible .
3 - 3 Beeper Pitch – Good Read The beeper pitch codes modify the pitc h (frequency) of the beep the scan- ner emits on a good read. Def ault = Medium. Beeper Pitch – Err or The beeper pitch codes modify the pi tch (frequency) of the sound the scan- ner emits when there is a bad read or error .
3 - 4 LED – Good Read The LED indicator can be programmed On or Off in response to a good read. Def ault = On. Number of Beeps – Good Read The number of beeps of a good read can be progr ammed from 1 - 9. The same number of beeps will be applied to the beep er and LED in response to a good read.
3 - 5 Good Read Delay This sets the minimum amount of time bef ore the scanner can read another bar code. Def ault = 0 ms (No Dela y). User -Specified Good Read Delay If you w ant to set your own leng.
3 - 6 LED Illumination - Manual T rigger If you wish to set the illumination LED brightness, scan one of the bar codes below . This sets the LED illumination for the scanner when the trig- ger is pressed. Def ault = High. Note: The LEDs are like a flash on a camera.
3 - 7 Presentation Mode Presentation Mode uses ambient light to detect bar codes. The LED dims until a bar code is presented to the scanner , then the LED br ightens to read the code. If the light le vel in the room is not high enough, Presentation Mode ma y not work properly .
3 - 8 Presentation Centering Use Presentation Centering to narrow th e scanner’ s field of view when it is in the stand to make sure the scanner reads only those bar codes intended by the user . F o r instance, if multip le codes are placed closely together , Presentation Centering will insure that only the desired codes are read.
3 - 9 Scan Presentation Centering On , then scan one of the f ollowing bar codes to change the top , bottom, left, or right of the centering window . Then scan the percent you w ant to shift the centering window using digits on the inside back co ver of this manu al.
3 - 10 Mobile Phone Read Mode When this mode is selected, your scan ner is optimized to read bar codes from mobile phone or other LED displa ys. Ho w e ver , the speed of scanning pr inted bar codes ma y be slightly low er w hen this mode is enabled. Note: To turn off Mobil Phone Read Mo de, scan the Manual Trigger Mode bar code (see page 3-5 ).
3 - 11 Use shor ter delays in applications wh ere repetitiv e bar code scanning is required. Reread Dela y only works when in Presentation Mode (see page 3-7).
3 - 12 Centering Use Centering to narrow the scanner’ s fiel d of view to make sure that when the scanner is hand-held, it re ads only those bar codes in tended by the user . F or instance, if multiple codes are placed clos ely together , center ing will insure that only the desired codes are read.
3 - 13 Scan Centering On , then scan one of the f ollow ing bar codes to change the top , bottom, left, or r ight of the center ing window . Then scan the percent you want to shift the centering window using digits on the inside bac k cov er of this manual.
3 - 14 Video Rever se Video Re verse is used to allo w the scanner to read bar codes that are inverted. The Video Re verse Off bar code belo w is an example of this type of bar code . Scan Video Rever se Only to read only inv er ted bar codes. Scan Video Rever se and Standard Bar Codes to read both types of codes .
3 - 15 W orking Orientation Some bar codes are direction-sensitive . For e xample, KIX codes and OCR can misread when scanned sidew ays or upside down. Use the working orientation settings if your direction-sensitiv e codes will not usually be presented upr ight to the scanner .

4 - 1 4 Data Editing Prefix/Suffix Overview When a bar code is scanned, additional in fo rm ation is sent to the host computer along with the bar code data. This gr oup of bar code data and additional, user-defined data is called a “message stri ng.
4 - 2 symbology to which you want to apply the prefix or suffix. For example, for Code 128, Code ID is “j” and Hex ID is “6A”. Step 3. Scan the 2 hex digits from the Programming Chart inside the back cover of this manual or scan 9 , 9 for all symbologies.
4 - 3 Step 1. Scan the Clear One Prefix or Clear One Suffix symbol. Step 2. Determine the 2 digit Hex val ue from the Symbology Chart (included in the Symbology Chart, beginning on page A-1) for the symbology from which you want to clear the prefix or suffix.
4 - 4 Suffix Selections Function Code T ransmit When this selection is enabled and f unction codes are contained within the scanned data, the scanner transmits the func tion code to the terminal. Char ts of these function c odes are provided in Supported Interface Keys star ting on page 7-3 .
4 - 5 Inter character Dela y An intercharacter dela y of up to 500 0 milliseconds (in 5ms increments) may be placed between the transmission of each char acter of scanned data.
4 - 6 Interfunction Dela y An interfunction dela y of up to 5000 milliseconds (in 5ms increments) may be placed between the transmission of each segment of the message string. Scan the Interfunction Delay bar code below , then scan the num- ber of 5ms dela ys, and the Save bar code using the Programming Chart inside the back co ver of this manual.
5 - 1 5 Data Formatting Data Format Editor Intr oduction Y ou ma y use the Data F ormat Editor to change the scanner’s output. F or exam- ple, y ou can use the Data F ormat Editor to inser t characters at cer tain points in bar code data as it is scanned.
5 - 2 you are programming. (See Primary/Alternate Data Formats on page 5-8 for further information.) Step 3. Terminal Type Refer to Terminal ID Table (page 5-4) and loca te the Terminal ID number for your PC. Scan three nu meric bar codes on the inside back cover to program the scanner for y our terminal ID (you must enter 3 digits).
5 - 3 Other Pr ogramming Selections Clear One Data Format This deletes one data format for one symbology. If you are clearing the primary format, scan 0 from the Programming Chart inside the back cover of this manual. If you are cl earing an alternate format, scan 1 , 2 , or 3 , depending on the format you are cl earing.
5 - 4 Data Format Editor Commands Send Commands Send all character s F1 Include in the output message all of the characters from the input message, starting from current cursor position, followed by an insert character. Syntax = F1xx where xx stands for the insert character’s hex value for its ASCII code.
5 - 5 ASCII code, and xx stands for the inse rt character’s hex value for its ASCII code. Ref er to the ASCII Conversion Chart (Code Page 1252), beginning on page A-4 for decimal, hex and character codes.
5 - 6 Sea rch backw ard for a cha rac te r F9 Search the input message backward for “xx” character from the current cursor position, leaving the cursor pointing to the “xx” character. Syntax = F9xx where xx stands for the search character’s hex value for its ASCII code.
5 - 7 Stop replacing character s E5 Terminates character replacement. Syntax = E5. Compare character s FE Compare the character in the curren t cursor position to the character “xx.” If characters are equal, move the cursor forward one position. Syntax = FExx where xx stands for the comparison character’s hex value for its ASCII code.
5 - 8 Def ault = Data Formatter On, Not Required, K eep Prefix/Suffix. Primary/Alternate Data Formats Y ou can sav e up to four data f or mats, a nd s witch between these formats. Y our primar y data format is sav ed under 0 . Y our other three formats are sav ed under 1 , 2 , and 3 .
6 - 1 6 Symbologies This programming section contains the f ollowing menu selections. Ref er to Chapter 9 f or settings and def aults. • All Symbologies • Interleaved 2 of 5 • Aztec Code • Kor.
6 - 2 All Symbologies If you w ant to decode all the symbologi es allowab le for y our scanner , scan the All Symbologies On code. If on the other hand, y ou want to decode only a par ticular symbology , scan All Symbologies Off follo wed b y the On symbol f or that par ticular symbology .
6 - 3 Codabar <Default All Codabar Settings> Codabar On/Off Codabar Start / Stop Characters Star t/Stop characters identify the leadi ng and trailing ends of the bar code. Y o u may either tr ansmit, or not transmit Star t/Stop characters. Def ault = Don’t T ransmit .
6 - 4 When Check Character is set to V alidate, but Don’t T ransmit , the unit will only read Codabar ba r codes printed with a check char acter , but will not transmit the chec k character with the scanned data. Codabar Concatenation Codabar suppor ts symbol concatenati on.
6 - 5 Codabar Message Length Scan the bar codes below to chang e the message length. Ref er to Message Length Description (page 6-2) f or addition al info r mation.
6 - 6 Code 39 < Default All Code 39 Settings > Code 39 On/Off Code 39 Star t / Stop Characters Star t/Stop characters identify the leadin g and trailing ends of the bar code . Y ou may either transmit, or not tr ansmit Start/Stop characters. Def ault = Don’t T ransmit.
6 - 7 When Check Char acter is set to V alidate and T ransmit , the scanner only reads Code 39 bar codes printed with a check character , and will transmit this character at the end of the scanned data. Def ault = No Check Char ac- ter . Code 39 Message Length Scan the bar codes below to chang e the message length.

6 - 9 Character pairs /M and /N decode as a minus sign and period respectively . Character pairs /P through /Y decode as 0 through 9. Code 39 Code P age Code pages define the mapping of character codes to characters .
6 - 10 Interleaved 2 of 5 < Default All Interleaved 2 of 5 Settings > Interleaved 2 of 5 On/Off Check Digit No Check Digit indicates that the scanner reads and transmits bar code data with or without a check digit.

6 - 18 Code 128 <Default All Code 128 Settings> Code 128 On/Off ISBT 128 Concatenation In 1994 the International Society of Blood T ransfusion (ISBT) ratified a standard f or communicating critical bl ood inf or mation in a uniform manner . The use of ISBT f ormats requires a pa id license.

6 - 21 Te l e p e n <Default All Telepen Settings> T elepen On/Off T elepen Output Using AIM T elepen Output, the scanner reads symbols with star t/stop pat- tern 1 and decodes them as standard full ASCII (star t/stop patter n 1).
6 - 22 T elepen Message Length Scan the bar codes below to change the message length. Ref er to Message Length Description (page 6-2) f or additional inf ormation.
6 - 23 UPC-A Chec k Digit This selection allows y ou to specif y whether the check digit should be transmitted at the end of the scanned data or not. Def ault = On .
6 - 24 UPC-A Addenda Required When Required is scanned, the scanner wi ll only read UPC-A bar codes that hav e addenda. Y ou must then turn on a 2 or 5 digit addenda listed on page 6-23 . Def ault = Not Required. UPC-A Addenda Separator When this f eature is on, there is a space between the data from the bar code and the data from the addenda.
6 - 25 Def ault = Off . Coupon GS1 DataBar Output If you scan coupons that ha ve both UPC and GS1 DataBar codes, y ou may wish to scan and output only the data from the GS1 DataBar code. Scan the GS1 Output On code below to scan and out put only the GS1 DataBar code data.
