2 - 1 2 Getting Star ted Overview This guide contains installatio n and configurati on instructions for the Hone ywell 8650 Bluetooth ® Ring Scanne r module, its tethered ring scanner or r ing imager and batter y chargers.
2 - 2 Initial Setup F ollowing are the steps you might tak e when setting up a new Bluet ooth Ring Scanner. More instr uction for each step is listed later in this guide. Contact Cust omer Support (page 10-1) if y ou need additional help. Accessor y installation or remov al should be performed on a clea n, we ll-lit surface.
2 - 3 Components Bluetooth Ring Scanner Before Assemb ly Bluetooth Module The Bluetooth ring scanner modu le does not hav e a power or on-off s witch. When the batter y is installed, the unit and its accessories are On. Remo ve the batter y to power do wn or turn off the unit.
2 - 4 Wrist Strap / Back of Hand Strap Ring Imager / Ring Scanner The ring image r can scan and decode 1D and 2D bar code s . The imager has th ree small illuminat ion LEDs at the top of the scan windo w or aper ture. The ring scanner can sca n and decode 1D bar codes.
2 - 5 Assembl y Determine Left or Right Orientation Deter mining whether to wear the module assembly on the left or r ight has a bearin g on how the ring cab le is attached to the module and the r ing to the finger . The r ing cable should not cross o ver or under the hand.
2 - 6 Connecting the Ring Device Cab le 1. Slip the ring cable connecto r through the elastic ring cable guide on the side of the Bluetooth module slee ve. The con- nector can be inserted from the left or the right. 1. Choose the same side as the fi nger that will be wearing the ri n g.
2 - 7 4. Press down on the battery until it is seated in the battery bay an d close the battery bay hatch cover. Slide the battery latch to the left to secure the battery in the Bluetooth Module. 5. The Bluetooth module beeps (short lo w tone beep, long low tone beep, l ong high to ne beep) and the module LED flashes.
2 - 8 Scanning bad bar codes gene rates a bad scan beep and/or an LED lig ht sequence. In some cases, the receipt of data from the ring device triggers a good scan beep from the Blueto oth module, and.
2 - 9 Bluetooth Ring Device LED The ri ng decoding devices do not have the ability to emit a good read or bad read sound. The ri ng de vice LED indicates status as follo ws: LED System Condition Bluetooth Module Beep Sequence Green User Good Scan Shor t high beep Green Configuration Good Scan Configur ation proce ss successful.
2 - 10 Rebooting the Bluetooth Module Suspend T o improv e batter y life , the Suspend timeout can be adjusted by scanning the bar codes i n Set Suspend Timeout . Suspend begins if the Suspend time out occurs bef ore the ring device trigger is pressed.
2 - 11 When the Bluetooth Ring Scanner module pai rs with an other Bluetooth de vice, it me ans the Bluetooth Ring Scanner module can send seri al data to the paired Bluetooth de vice. Bluetooth Ring Scanner module pa ired data is stored in non-vola tile memory in the module and data is sa ved ov er power cycles.
2 - 12 Connecting to a Generic Bluetooth Device 1. Using the ring scanner attached to the Bluetooth Ring Scanner modu le, and the bar codes in Bluetooth Module Pro- gramming , scan the follo wing bar codes: • Restore Factory Defaults • Pairing Status > Enable Slav e Mode 2.
2 - 13 5. Removing / Replacing the Ring Finger Stra p Assembly Note: Do not pull on the finger strap or the flexible liner to re move the finger strap assembly. This quick disconne ct function is designed for occasional safety hazards and is not intended for daily removal.
2 - 14 How T o Scan a Bar Code The functi on to use an imag er lik e a camera (or f or OCR decod ing) is not suppor ted. Usin g a Continuous Scan option, if av ailable, to scan programming bar codes is not support ed. The linear bar codes in this guide were created using Code 128 symbology .
2 - 15 F actors That Ma y Impact Scanner P erf ormance Successful scanning range of a bar code decoder is dependent up on many outside influence s including size of the bar code, quality of the bar co.
2 - 16 Issue: Bar codes on the prin ted page are too compact to be scanned, especially with a long range scanner. Solution 1 - Printing Adobe Ac robat PDF File Pages: When printing pages from an Adobe.
2 - 17 Return to F actory Default Settings Choose one of the follo wing methods to restore factory defaults in the module: 1. Scan the Restor e Factory Defaults (page 3-2) bar code . 2. To physically reset the module to factory default settings, remove the batte ry.

3 - 1 3 Bluetooth Module Pr ogramming Bar Codes Intr oduction Bar codes in this section are designed to be read by a ring sc anner or r ing imager connecte d to the Bluetooth Ring Scanner module. This section contains programming bar codes to be used when programming the Bluetooth Ring Scanner module only .
3 - 2 Restore Factory Defaults Scan this bar co de to restore factory defa ults in the Bluetooth Ring Scanner module. Module Firmware V ersion 1. Connect the Bluetooth Ring Scann er module to a host device with a video display. Bluetooth Ring Scanner must be fully assembled (battery, ring decoder).
3 - 3 P airing Status Scan the bar code to enable pairing in Slav e Mode for the Bl uetooth module. Upon a successful scan, the Bluetooth mod- ule then disconnects from the paired device, deletes any sa ved or current pairing information and transitions into slave mode.
3 - 4 Suspend Timeout T o improv e batter y life , the Suspend timeout can be adjusted by scanning the following bar codes. A trigger press is required to wake the module from Suspend. Note: After the trigger press (to wake the module from Suspend) another trigger press is needed to scan a bar code.
3 - 5 Beep on Reconnect When Beep on Reconne ct is enabled and reconnect is successful , the module emits a patter n of a shor t low beep a nd a shor t high beep and the Blue LED blinks slowly , ev er y 4 seconds.
3 - 6 Reconnect Interval Timeout Scan one of the follo wing bar codes to set the amount of time between attempts to reconnect with a pre viously connected Bluetooth enabled de vice.
3 - 7 Reconnect Timeout Scan one of th e f ollowing bar codes to set the amount o f time the Master device will retry connection attempts before ceas- ing attempts. When the parameter is set to Off, reconnect attempts will continue until the batter y in the Bluetooth module is depleted.
3 - 8 Role Switching When Role Switching is enabled and the module h as successfully paired with a n Bluetooth capable mobile device as a master , the module will perf or m role s wi tching with the mobile device and become a slav e device.
3 - 9 A uthentication A uthentication is the process of verifying the identity of a device with which a connection is to be estab lished. When A uthentication is disabled, any de vice can conn ect to the Bluetooth Ring Scanner module.
