2 Intr oduction The Hart 1529 is a low-cost, high-accurac y , digital thermometer readout de - signed to be used with 25 and 100 Ω PR Ts, thermistors, and thermocouples. Its unique combination of features makes it suitable for a wide v ariety of applica - tions from laboratory measurement to industrial processes.

4 Quic k Start This section briefly explains the basics of setting up and operating your 1529 Thermometer Readout. 4.1 Unpac king Carefully unpack the 1529 t hermometer readout. V erify that the foll owing items are present: • 1529 Thermometer Readout (The battery inside the 1529 is completely charged when shipped.
4.4.1 Using the Clamp-on Ferrites Clamp-on ferrites a re provided wit h this product for the use of impro ving its electromagnetic (EM) immunity in en vironments of excessiv e EM interference. During EMC testi ng we found that ferrites cl amped around the probe cables and power cord reduced the risk that EM interference af f ects measurements.

5.2 Bac k P anel The back panel consists of the po wer switch, A C adapter connector , charging indicator , IR port, RS-232 port connect or , IEEE-488 port connector (optional), serial label, and probe connectors. The 1529 thermometer readout can be con - figured in three dif ferent ways.

6 General Operation This section e xplains basic operat ion of the 1529 thermometer readout. De - tailed operati on of the 1529 is e xplained in Secti ons 7 and 8. Section 7 e xplains the menu structure and the functions a v ailable in the menu struct ure and Sec - tion 8 e xplains the communicat ions interf ace for operating the 1529 remote ly .

Thes e patented connectors accept bare wire, spade, or mini banana plug terminations.

6.5 DC P ower Sour ce Caution : F or CE compliance and for performance , use only the AC adapter shipped with the instrument by Hart Scientific. If the AC adapter needs to be replaced, contact a Hart Authorized Service Center (see Sec - tion 1.3). The DC power source pro vides power to char ge the battery .
6.8.2 Enabling the Channel Channels are set first by selecting either simultaneous or scan mode in the CHANNEL menu CHANNEL MODE function. Simult aneous mode sho ws one to four channels in the upper di splay simultaneously .
6.10 Data Logging Data can be logged either on demand or automati cally at a user -selected inter - val . When data is logged, readi ngs are stored to the inst rument's memory and assigned a label for easy recall and or ga nization of data. Up to 100-demand log and 8,160 auto log readings can be stored.
7 Menu Functions Selecting the Enter/Menu button from the front panel accesses the main menu of the 1529 thermometer readout. The main menu consists of the submenus: CHANNEL , PR OBE , FIELDS , LOGGING ,a n d SYSTEM . Each submenu has its o wn set of functions.

The LR buttons are used to select the period between measurements. Press the Enter button to sa ve the new set ting. Press the Exit button to cancel and to exit to the menu. When the measure period is set t o less than 1 second (i.e. 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 seconds) the 1529 enters the Fast Measurement M ode.

The RANGE parameter is used to select the appropriate resist ance range. For 25 ohm and 100 ohm PR Ts select 100 ohms and for 1000 ohm PR Ts select 10K ohms. The WIRES parameter sets the appropriate number of lead wires from the sen - sor . This parameter can be set to 2-, 3-, or 4-wires.

7.2.1.10 Standard Thermocouple Con versions Standard thermocouple con versions incl ude types B, E, J, K, N, R, S, T , and Au-Pt. V oltage is con verted to temperature using standard reference functions. (For addit ional information c onsult the publi cation NIST Monograph 175.
7.2.2 Copy Pr obe The COPY PR OBE function allo ws you to copy a set of probe parameters from one channel or memory location to a nother . The parameters are copied from the user selected source channel or memory l ocation into the current channel. The COPY PR OBE function can be password protected to restrict access.

7.3.3 Edit Fields The EDIT FIELDS f unction allows editing of the display fields for a g i ven dis - play set (1 through 9). Y ou can choose to display one to eight fiel ds. The av ail - able f ields and their corresponding k eyw ords are gi ven in the Field T ypes table abov e.

The LOG PER parameter is for selecting t he interv al between measurements. Y ou may select between 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 30 seconds, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 30 minutes or 1 hour . The LOG PER must be set to a v alue less t han or equal to the measurement period.
Note: The log is not st arted or stopped until the Enter b u t t o ni sp r e s s e dt oc o n - firm the user action. After a log sessio n is started, the bottom por tion of the display shows the log statistics. These statistics can also be viewed from the LOG ST A TS function of the LOGGING menu.

Communications port s are used for communicating with a computer , printer , or other equipment.

The ECHO parameter allows t he user to set the echo (duplex) mode. Selecting ON enables echoing so that all charact ers receiv ed on the serial port are echoed back ov er the serial port. This mode is useful when using terminal emulation software on a computer to co mmunicate with the instrument.
The GPIB parameter allows the user to enable or disable the IEEE-488 port. The ADDR parameter allo ws the user to specify the address of this instrument on the IEEE-488 bus. The def ault address is 22 and the range is 1 to 30. The TERM parameter allows the user to s elect the termination character trans - mitted after each transmission.
The D FORM parameter allows the user to set the date f ormat used when dis - play the date. The choices are M -D-YY , M-D-YYYY , D/M/YY , and D/M/YYYY . Press the LR buttons to change the parameter setting. Use the UD b uttons to scroll between the parameters.

The C0K, C10K, and C100K parameters apply to the thermistor probe types and 10K Ω resistance range. Use these parameters to adjust the mea - surement at 0K,10K, and 100K Ω respecti vely . These values are in K ohms . The D A TE parameter is the date the current calibration was performed.
By default the password i s set to ‘1529’ when the instrument ships from the factory . W e recommend that the user cha nge the default password to protect the password-protected sett ings. Note: Keep your passw ord in a secure location and do not forget it.
8 Digital Comm unications Interface 8.1 Overview The communication feature allows an e xternal de vice, such as a computer , to communicate with the 1529 t o obtain measurement data and cont rol operating conditions. Communication is accomp lished by issuing commands to the 1529 through RS-232, IR, or IEEE-488 communication ports.
All commands sent to the 1529 through the serial interface must be te rminated with a carriage return or linefeed character . 8.2.2 GPIB Communications The GPIB interface allo ws the Model 1529 to be connected to an IEEE-488 bus along with other inst ruments.

Commands consist of a command header and, if necessary , parameter data. All commands must be terminated with either a carriage return (ASCII 0D he x or 13 decimal) or ne w line character (ASCII 0A he x or 1 0 decimal ). Command headers consist of one or more mnemonics separated by colons (:).
Logging Commands – commands for automati c and demand logging. System Commands – commands for general system configuration parameters. Communication Interface Commands – commands for contro lling the inter - face conf iguration(serial port, IR, and IEEE).
• <num> indicates numeric value is required. • <chn list> indicates a list of channel numbers is required. • <bool> indicates a Boolean value (0 or 1) is required. The mneumonics OFF and ON are also accepted for 0 and 1, respectively .
The CALCulate suf fix, <chn>, specifies the channel (1 to 4). The A VERage suff ix, <n>, specifies the calculation type. See T able 4 on page 126 for the Sta - tistical Calculation T y pes. 8.4.1.3 CALCulate:A VERage<n>:TYPE? Returns the ke yword for the specified f ield type number .
