4 Loading Paper Loading Paper Y ou can load up to 120 sheets of plain pa per , 100 shee ts of matte paper , and 20 sheets of most other photo papers (see pa ge 5 for a list). Load transfer paper and adhesive sheets one sheet at a time. 1. Open the paper support and pull out the extension.
Using Special Papers 5 Always load paper short edge first, even for landscape printing. Load letterhead or pre-printed paper top edge fir st, facing up . Basic Printing 7 Basic Printing This section describes the basic steps for printing a photo or document stored on your Wi nd ows ® or Macintosh ® computer , and printing dir ectly on an ink jet- printable CD or DVD. F or detailed instructions on printing, see the on-screen User’s Guide .
8 Basic Printing 4. Make sure EPSON St ylus Photo R280 Series is selected, then click the Preference s or Properties button. (If you see a Setup , Printer , or Options button, click it. Then click Preference s or Properties on the ne xt screen.) 5. On the Main tab , select the basic print settings.

If you ’ re using OS X 10.2.x, click the Print Center icon instead, then double-click Stylus Photo R280 in the P rinter Lis t window .
12 Basic Printing Printing Borderless Photos Y ou can print your photos with no margins, extending the image all the way to the edges of the page. Be sure to select thes e settings when printing borderless photos: Tip: The PhotoEnhance option is automatically selected when printing on certain ph oto papers.
Printing on CDs and DVDs 13 Printing on CDs and DVDs Y our printer includes a special tray that lets you print customized text, graph ics, and photos directly on an ink jet-prin table CD or D VD. The Epson P rint CD software makes it easy to import your o wn photos, add text, and modify your designs with a variety of special effects.
14 Basic Printing T o print on a small CD or D VD (8-cm), place the small CD/D VD adapter on the tray first, then place the CD or DVD inside the adapter . Caution: Make sure you alw a ys use the small CD/D VD adapter when you print on 8-cm CDs or D VDs and that the CD or D VD and adapter lie flat on the tray; other wise the printer may be damaged.
Maintain ing Your Prin ter 15 Maintaining Your Printer F ollow the instruction s in this chapter for checking and cleaning the print head nozzles and replacing ink cartridges. Tip: T o keep y our Epson product looking like new , make sure you don ’t place an ything on top of the cov er or use it as a writing surface.
16 Maintaining Your Printer Cleaning the Print Head If print quality has declined and the nozzle check pattern indicates clogged nozzles, you can clean the print head. Note: Print head cleaning uses ink, so clean it only if necessary . If the red H ink light comes on or flashes, you cannot clean the print head.
Checking the Ink Cartridge Status 17 Checking the Ink Cartridge Status When the red H ink light starts flashing, one or more cartridges are low on ink and will need to be replaced soon. When the r ed H ink light stays on, you need to replace the cartridge(s).

Replacing Ink Cartridges 19 Caution: Do not mov e the print head by hand; this ma y damage your printer . Alwa ys press and release the H ink bu t ton to mov e it. Be careful not to touch the white flat cable inside th e printer . 5. P ress the H ink button again.
20 Maintaining Your Printer 7. Remo ve the new ink cartridge from the package. Caution: Be careful not to break the hooks on the front of the ink cartridge when y ou remo ve it from the pac kage. Do not touc h the green c hip on the front of the cartridge.
Replacing Ink Cartridges 21 10. Insert the new ink cartrid ge into the holder and push it down until it clicks into place. 11. Once you replace all the cartridges that need replacing, close the car tridge cover and push it do wn until it clicks into place.
22 Solving Problems Solving Problems If you have a problem with your printer , check the lights on the control panel to diagnose the cause. Y ou can also check “P roblems and Solutions ” on page 23 for basic troubleshooting suggesti ons, or see your on-screen User’s Guide for more detailed help.
Problems and Solutions 23 Problems and Solutions Check the solutions below if you ’ re having trouble using your R280 Series . Printing Problems ■ Make sure y our paper is loaded short edge first and is positioned against the right side with the edge guide against its left side.
24 Solving Problems Paper Feeding Problems ■ If paper doesn ’ t feed, remove it from the sheet feeder . F lip through the stack to separate the sheets a little. Then reload the paper against the right side, and slide the edge guide against the paper (but not too tightly).
