2 Chapter 1 Conn ecti ng Overview TVs use d to be simple : no color, no di gital vid eo, no ster eo sound, no di gita l audio, no choices. All you needed was an antenna and a TV. The antenna captured pictures and sounds . A wire connected the antenna to the TV to transfer pi ctures and soun ds.
3 1 Befor e You Begin Before You Begin Make sure that all of your equip ment is turne d off and the recorder is un plugged. C on necting t o a P hone Line You will need ac cess to a standard a nalog phone jack. Your recorder needs t o be connected to a phon e line to communicate with DIRECTV.
4 Chapter 1 Conn ecti ng If you currently own a Dual LNB satellite dish antenna that is already connected to two TVs, you can purchase a multiswitch (des cribed on page 6) that will allow you to connect two cables to your new recorder as well as one to an existing receiver for your second TV.
5 1 Useful Terms Useful T erms If you ’ re not an audi o/video wizard, you may fi nd yourself stu mbling over some of the names, features and fun ctions of various pieces of equipmen t. Here ’ s a quick reference to help you under stand some of the terms you may encou nter during inst allation.
6 Chapter 1 Conn ecti ng Dual T uner : A tuner picks o ne chan nel out of all of y our avail able ch anne ls. This a llows you to view a single channel and to change channel s. “ Dual tuner ” means your recorder has two tuners. It can pick out tw o channels at once, allowi ng you t o record programs o n two channels at the same time.
7 1 Useful Terms Co a x i a l R F C a b l e : A coaxial RF cable transfers both audio and video on a single cable. Opti c al (or Di gital) Audio C able : An optical (or digital) audio cable transfers audio only. This cable transfers audio at the highest poss ible quality from your recorder to an A/V receiver.

Dolb y Digital (AC - 3) Audio : Dolby Digital audio is recorded on six separate channels, each of which can be heard on one of six separate s peakers .
9 1 Cables and Accessories Cables and Accessories In additio n to your t elevision and the equipment that shipped with this r ecorder (sho wn below ), you ’ ll need a satellit e dish antenna — which should be prope rly mounted before you connect the recorder — and a st andard, anal og phone line (see pag e 3 for det ails).
10 Chapter 1 Conn ecti ng Setup Exampl es Audio and Video Cables C o mpos ite . Many T Vs and VCRs have connectors for Compo site A/V cables. If your equipment has them, you can use the Co mposite A/V cables fo r both audio an d video.. RF Coaxial . Some TVs only have connectors for RF Coaxial cable.
11 1 Setup Exampl es Digital Au dio . The receiver includes a Digital Audio Out jack for compatibility with Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio. To use this feature, you will need an optical audio cable (not supplied), and a devi ce that accepts Dolby Digital inp ut.

Connect one coaxial RF cable that comes from your satellite dish ant enna to the jack labeled “ Satellite In 1 ” on the recorder.

24 Chapter 2 Guid ed Se tup Overview Now that you have finis hed connectin g your DIRECTV Dig ital Satellite Recorder, you are ready to begin Guided Setup . When you first p lug in the recorder, s creens appear which display its p rogress as it starts u p.
25 2 Sate llite Dish G uided Setup Satellite Dish Guided Setup Satellite Dish Guided Setu p tells the recorder what type of satellite dish antenna you are using, so you must go through it at least once, even if you are only replacing a recorder that was already wo rking.
26 Chapter 2 Guid ed Se tup Satellit e C onnections. If you connected an RF coaxial cable to each of the recorder ’ s “ Satellite In ” jacks, select “ Two cables. ” If you connected only one RF coaxial cable (to the “ Satellite In 1 ” jack), s elect “ One cable.
27 2 Sate llite Dish G uided Setup Note: You can check s ignal strength while y ou adjust the po sition of your satellit e dish antenna. The signal strength meter on this screen provides audio feedback — a tone t hat becomes higher pitched as th e signal gets str onger.
28 Chapter 2 Guid ed Se tup Progra m Guide Data . Over the first 1 to 2 days, the re corder will gather and proces s up to two weeks of pr ogram data from the DIRECTV s atellites. Program data includes p rogram titles, times, channels, program des criptions, and more.
29 2 Activate Activate Now it ’ s time to activate services for your DIRECTV Digital Satellite Recorder. Before you make the phone call: • The recorder should be on, t uned to channel 10 0, and re ceiving a signal fro m the satellit e dish antenna.

31 2 Phone Setup No Loc al Number s . If you chos e a local dial-in number, yo u will not see this screen. If you selected None of the abo ve on the Dial-I n Numbers screen, select “ Reques t 800 numb er authorization ” her e. Selecting this option temporarily selects the toll-free number and submits a req uest to use the toll-fre e number.

34 Chapter 3 The Basics in 5 Short Tours T our 1: Pla y Wi th Live T V In this tou r, you ’ ll take a look at how you can control live TV. So grab you r remote! First, press the PAUSE button — the progr am you ’ re watchi ng pauses. Now you can stand up and stret ch, or go to the kit chen and get a snack.
35 3 Tour 1: Play With Live TV Status Bar Press PAUSE or PLAY to see the status bar. It shows a one-hour period. The green segment is th e portion of the curren t hour that has been sav ed by your recorder. The rig ht edge of the g reen part is al ways the cur rent time.

51 4 Chan nel Ba nner Channel Banner The channel ban ner appears at th e top of the scr een when you change channels or press INFO, THUMBS UP or THUMBS DOWN, or the RIGHT arrow during a program. I t disappears aft er a few seconds. You can set a preference (see page 96), to decide how long the banner stays on th e screen when y ou change c hannels.
52 Chapter 4 Live TV Watc hing Liv e TV Play with Li ve TV Part of the fun of watching l ive TV an d recorded prog rams with your DIRECTV Digital Satellite Reco rder is using the p ause, instant replay, and s low motion features.
53 4 Status Bar Status Bar When you press PLAY, PAUSE, FORWARD or BACK, a status bar app ears on the lower part of your screen. In live TV, the status bar represents one hour (notice the white tick marks every 15 minu tes). In recorded prog rams, the bar shows the pro gram ’ s length.
54 Chapter 4 Live TV Watc hing Liv e TV Music Channels Some D IRECTV channels feature con tinuous music. You can tune to a music chan nel just as you would any other chan nel. You cannot record music chann els or use special features — such as pause or rewind — on a music channel.
55 4 Standby Standby You can put your recorder in stan dby mode by selecting “ S tandby ” fr om DIRECT V Central, or by pr essing the STA NDBY butto n on the f ront of your recorder. • If you temporarily turned off Parental Contr ols, standby mode enables them again.

58 Chapter 5 Finding and Rec ording Programs Recording Programs: The Basics All progra ms saved on your recorder are liste d in the Now Playing List (no mor e searching thr ough unlabeled videotapes!). To go to the Now Playing List, press the DIRECTV but ton on your remote con trol twice, o r press the LIST butt on.
59 5 I Know What I Like . . . Getti ng a Se a son P as s A Season Pass records every episode of a series that airs on a certain channel — even if the day or time slot changes! It is totally automatic and really easy to set up. Just select a program (from the DIRECTV ADVANCED PROGRAM GUIDE ™ , for example) and choose “ Get a Season Pass.
60 Chapter 5 Finding and Rec ording Programs M a n a g i n g Yo u r S e a s o n P a s s r e c o r d i n g s . With Dual Tuner, yo u can record two programs at the same time. C onflicts will occur on ly if you try to schedule a t hird record ing that overlaps the othe r two.

Pr ogra m Inform atio n Scr een In the Program Guide, highlighting a pro gram title (that is not currently playing) and pressing SELECT display s some information abou t the program. You can also choo se “ Season Pass & o ther options ” to get to the Program Info rmation screen.
64 Chapter 5 Finding and Rec ording Programs Actions you can take . The lower part of the Program Information screen shows actions you can take. Available actions vary depending on what kind of program is selected and whether the program is already recorded or is scheduled to record.
65 5 I Know What I Like . . . Rev i ewin g th e T o Do List The To Do List shows all scheduled recor dings. To view it, go to DIRECTV Central, then Pick Programs to Record, then To Do List. After setting up a recording, you can confirm that it is scheduled on the To Do List.
66 Chapter 5 Finding and Rec ording Programs View Recording Histo ry This is an advanced feature for those who really want all the details. It is available as a selection in the To Do List, and dis plays a history of programs that have b een deleted or have not recor ded.

It also helps y ou search for fun, exciting new pro grams that match your interests, hobbies, favorite stars an d genres.
69 5 I Know What I Like . . . I Already Know What I Want to Record . . . The following options are useful if you already know the title of the program you want to record: • Search by Title • Recor.
70 Chapter 5 Finding and Rec ording Programs Re cord by Ti me /C ha nn el Record by Time/Channel offers you three choices: Browse by Time, Browse by Channel, and Manually Record Time/Channel. These options are described separately in the next few pages.
71 5 I Know What I Like . . . Bro wse by Chan nel Browse by Channel let s you browse through pro grams on a particular chann el. You can start wit h all channels or ju st your favori tes.

You can also create a manual repeat recording fo r every week, ever y day, o r every week day.
73 5 I Know What I Like . . . I Know What I Like . . . If you k now wha t you lik e, WishLis t searches are great! T hey allow you to fin d and automatically record shows that match your interests, tastes, passions, and whims. You can search for f uture programs with your favorite actor or director by creating an A ctor or Director WishList.

Cr eating a WishLi st From Search Using Wis hLists, select “ Create new W ishList. ” Next, select the t ype of WishList: Acto r, Director, Catego ry Only, Keyword, or Title. For most WishList searches, you us e the keypad on the next screen to spel l out what you ’ re looki ng for.

Tips f or e nt ering k e ywor d s • To specify an exact phrase in a Keyword or Title WishList, surround a set of word s with quotation m arks (to enter quotatio n marks, press PAUSE ( ). For example, the keyword PAUL S IMON might also turn u p a document ary abou t Simon Boli var with a director whose name is Paul.

79 5 I Know What I Like . . . Help Me Find New Programs . . . The DVR service p rovi des special featur es that help you sift t hrough upco ming programs to find sh ows you ’ d like: TiV o Suggestions Your recorder tries to make sure there is always something interesting on for you to watch.
80 Chapter 5 Finding and Rec ording Programs When there is empty space in the Now Pl aying List, the DVR service may record TiVo Suggestio ns for you. Suggestio ns are marked in the Now Playing List with a TiVo icon ( ). The record er never deletes a pr ogram you r equested to mak e room for a suggestion .
81 5 I Know What I Like . . . 4. Use the CHAN DOWN button to s ee themes that are not vis ible at first. When you highlight a theme, a short d escription of it appears at the top of the screen. S elect a theme. A list of programs appea rs. 5. You can use the CHAN DOWN butto n to see programs that are not visible at first.

84 Chapter 6 Messages an d Setup Messages fro m DIRECTV From time t o time DIREC TV may send you mes sages abou t updates to yo ur servi ce and other important n otices. These messages are important, useful and easy to get to — we made them that way because we really wan t you to rea d them.
