Chapter 1 Introduction This chapter gives an overview of the features of the Cyclade s AlterPath KVM/net. This chapter describes how ad ministrators and operators can us e the KVM/net features to securely mana ge connected computer systems and a lar ge variety of devices from anywhere on the local area network or on the Internet.
Description 2 AlterPath KVM/net Inst allation, Administration , and User ’s Guide Description The KVM/net is a 1U rack-mountble de vice that serves as a single access point for administering and using servers and other devices through inban d and out-of-band access methods.

Introduc tion 21 Cascaded Devices Cascaded Devices The KVM/net supports cascading, which allows administra tors to connect secondary KVM units to a primar y KVM/net. Cascading allows administrators to increase the number of managed devices to up to 1024 servers with a centraliz ed c onfiguration and access interface .

Introduc tion 23 Cascaded Devices Administrators can co nnect up to 32 KVM units to the master KVM/net. Each cascaded KVM device has two management ports that can be connected to the primary KVM/net. Note: Y ou must connect the master KVM/net’ KVM port to User 2 on the slave.
