Safety Precautions 10 • Use only the recommended battery. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Unplug the power cord periodically and wipe away any dust and dirt that has collected on the plug, the exterior of the power outlet, and the surrounding area.
Safety Precautions 11 • When using the camera on a beac h or at a windy location, be care ful not to allow dust or sand to enter the camera. This may cause the camera to malfun ction. • In regular use, small amounts of smoke may be emitted from the flash.

13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view and erase the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and transfer images to a computer.
14 Use the incl uded char ger to charg e the batte ry. Be sure to charge the ba ttery as it is not c harged at the ti me of purchase. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ● Align the o marks on the battery and charger, t hen insert the batt ery by sli ding it in ( ) and down ( ).
Charging the Battery 15 Approximate Number of Sho ts That Can Be Taken * The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, the number of shots that can be take n may be less than mentioned above.

Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 17 Open the cover. ● Slide the cov er ( ) and open it ( ). Insert the battery. ● Insert the b attery as sho wn until it lo cks into place wit h a click. ● Be sure to insert the battery in the correct direction or it will not properly loc k into place.
Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 18 Removing the Battery and Memory Card Remove t he battery . ● Open the cove r and press the battery lock in the direc tion of the arro w. X The battery will pop up. Remove the memory card. ● Push the memory card i n until you hear a click, then slowly re lease it.
19 Open the screen. ● Open the screen ( ), and ro tate it for ward 180°( ). ● Close the scr een ( ) . Using the Screen Adjusting the positio n of the screen • You can freely adjust t he angle and orient ation of the screen as you like for the shooting conditions.
20 The Date/Time se ttings screen will appear th e first time th e camera is turn ed on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the powe r button. X The Date/Time screen will appear.
Setting the Date and Time 21 Changing the Date and Time You can change the current da te and time set tings. Display the menus . ● Press the n butt on. Choose [Date/Time] in th e 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to choo se the 3 tab. ● Press the op buttons or turn the  dial to choose [Dat e/Time], then press the m button.
22 You can change the langua ge that display s on the screen. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. Display the settings screen . ● Press and hold the m button, then immediately p ress the n butt on. Set the disp lay languag e. ● Press the opqr buttons or turn the  dial to cho ose a lang uage, then pr ess the m button.
23 Before you us e a new memory card or one that has be en formatted in other devices, y ou should f ormat the ca rd with this c amera. Formattin g (initializ ing) a memory car d erases all d ata on the memory card. As you cannot retrieve the erased data, exercise adeq uate cautio n before formatting the memory card.
Pressing the Shutter Button 24 To take imag es that are in focus, be sure to first press the shutter button lightly (hal fway) to focu s, then pre ss fully to shoot. Press halfway (Press lightly to focus). ● Press lightl y until the ca mera beeps twic e and AF frames app ear where the ca mera focused.
25 Since the cam era can determi ne the subje ct and shooti ng conditions, you can let it automa tically sele ct the best settings fo r the scene a nd just shoot . The camera can a lso detect an d focus on face s, setting the color and b rightness to optimal leve ls.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 26 X When the camera focuses, it will beep twice and AF frames will appear whe re the camera focused. Several AF frames will appear whe n the camera focuses on more than one point. ● If [Raise the fl ash] appears on the screen, you should use the flash to s hoot.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 27 What if... • What if the colo r and brightn ess of the images do not turn out as exp ected? The scene icon (p. 180) that appears on the screen may not match th e actual scene. If this happens, try shooti ng in G mode (p.
28 You can view th e images you ha ve taken on the screen. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image you took will appear. Choose an image. ● Pressing q or turning the  dial counter- clockwise w ill cycle through t he images in the reverse or der they were take n, from the newest image to the oldest.
29 You can cho ose and er ase images o ne at a time . Please no te that eras ed images cann ot be recove red. Exerc ise adequa te caution before eras ing an image. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image you took will appear. Choose an image to erase .
30 The camera can aut omaticall y select all sett ings so that you can shoot movies just by pres sing the movie but ton. The audio wi ll record in stereo. Choose A mode. ● Set the mode dial to A . Compose the shot. ● Moving the zoom lever toward i will zoom in on your subject, making it appear larger.
Shooting Movies 31 ● Do not touch th e microphone wh ile shooting. ● Do not press any buttons other than the movie button while shooting. The sound the buttons make will be recorded in the movie. Stop shooting. ● Press the movi e button agai n. X The camera will beep twice and stop shooting the movie.
32 You can view th e movies you have shot on the scr een. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image you took will appear. X appears on movies. Choose a movie. ● Press the qr buttons or turn the  dial to choose a movi e, then pr ess the m butt on.

If you are already us ing software included with anothe r Canon-brand compact digita l camera, insta ll the softwa re from the incl uded CD-ROM, overwriting your curr ent insta llation.

Indicator 47 Screen Display in Dark Shooting Conditions The display automatical ly brightens wh en shooting i n dark condit ions, allowing y ou to chec k the compo sition (Nig ht Display function). However, th e brightnes s of the ima ge on the scr een, and th e brightnes s of the act ual image recorded may be different.

Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 59 Digital Tele-Converter The focal le ngth of the lens ca n be increased by approx. 1.7x or approx. 2.1x. This enables a fast er shutter spee d and less chance of ca mera shake than the zoom (i ncluding dig ital zoom) u sed by itse lf at the s ame zoom fact or.
60 You can inser t the shooting d ate and time in the lower right corner of an image. Once in serted, ho wever, the y cannot be deleted. B e sure to c heck beforehand that the d ate and time are correc tly set (p. 2 0). Choose [Date Stamp]. ● Press the n butt on.

Changing the Compression Ratio (Image Quality) 75 Approximate Values fo r Recording Pixels and Co mpression Ratio • The values in the table are measured according to Canon standards an d may change depending on the subject, memory card and camera settings.

Using the Self-Timer to Prevent Camera Shake 80 Custom Color The contra st, sharpne ss, color s aturation, r ed, green, bl ue, and ski n tones in an image can be c hosen and set at 5 different levels. ● Follow Step 2 on p. 79 to c hoose , then press the l butt on.
81 You can set th e time delay (0 – 30 seconds) an d the number of sho ts (1 – 10 shots). Choose $ . ● After pressi ng the p button, press th e op buttons or turn th e  dial to ch oose $ , then press the n button immediately. Choose th e settings.
82 You can use a T V to display the ca mera screen con tent while sh ooting. • To connect the camera to a TV, follow the S teps in “V iewing Im ages on a TV” (p. 127). • Shooting pr ocedures are t he same as when usi ng the camera scr een. While you keep the shutter button pressed ha lfway, the f ocus and exposu re are locked.
83 Getting More Out of Your Camera This chapter serves as the advanced version of Chapter 4 and explains how to take pictures using various functions. • This chapter assumes that yo u have set the mode d ial to G . • The sections “Setting th e Shutter Spee d” (p.
84 You can change the AF (Auto Focu s) frame mode to match the scene y ou want to shoot. Choose [AF Frame]. ● After pressi ng the n button, cho ose [AF Frame] in th e 4 tab, t hen press the qr buttons to cho ose an op tion. FlexiZone/Center The AF frame is locked to the center.
85 When the AF frame mode is set to [F lexiZone] ( p. 84) you can cha nge the position and size of the AF fr ame. Press the button. X The AF frame will turn orange. Move the AF frame. ● Turn the  dial to move the AF fra me. ● Press the opqr buttons to make fine adjustment s.
86 If you press the sh utter button halfway, the AF frame will magn ify and you can check the fo cus. Choose [AF-Poi nt Zoom]. ● Press the n button to choos e [AF- Point Zoom] i n the 4 tab, then press the qr buttons to cho ose [On]. Check the focu s.
Shooting with the AF Lock 87 Focus. ● The focus a nd exposure will be mai ntained where the blue AF frame appear s while you press the s hutter button halfway. The focus can be loc ked. After l ocking the fo cus, the fo cal distanc e will not change even wh en you release your finger fro m the shutter b utton.
88 You can choose a specific per son’s face t o focus on and th en shoot. Set the AF frame to [Face Detect] (p. 84). Enter Face Select mode. ● Point the camera toward th e face of th e subject an d press the button. X After [Face Select: On] appears, a face frame will appear around the face detected as the main subject.
89 You can u se manual f ocus when auto focus is not possible. If you pre ss the shutter butt on halfway afte r roughly foc using manually , you can fine tune the focus. Choose . ● After pres sing the q button, press the qr buttons or turn the  dial to cho ose , then press the m bu tton.
90 The camera au tomatical ly takes thre e continuou s shots in the following order: one at the pos ition set in manu al focus, and one each with focu s positions preset far ther and nearer.
91 If you lose track of yo ur subject while zo omed in, zooming ou t will make it easier to fi nd. Look for the subject. ● Press and hold the button. X The camera will zoom out, and the area that appeared on the screen before pressing the button will appear as a white frame on the screen.
92 You can change the metering me thod (brightn ess measuring function) to match the sh ooting con ditions. Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB Mode) 94 Compose the scene and sh oot. The camera tak es 3 continuou s shots while aut omatically ad justing the exposure to standard expo sure, unde rexposure an d overexposur e, in that order.
95 You can set th e shutter to the speed at wh ich you want t o shoot. The ca mera will set the a ppropriate aperture v alue for the s hutter spee d you set. M stands for “ Time value” . Set the mode dial to M . Make the setting. ● Turn the  dial to set the shutter speed.
96 You can set th e aperture to a value at whic h you want to shoo t. The camera will set the a ppropriate shutter sp eed for the aperture v alue you set. B stands for “Apert ure value” , which refers to the siz e of the ape rture opening insid e the lens.
97 You can manual ly set the shut ter speed and ape rture to shoo t images. D stands for “Manu al”. Set the mode dial to D . Make the setting. ● Press the o button to choose the shutte r speed or apert ure value. ● Turn the  dial to set a value.
98 The camera can d etect areas i n the scene, such as faces or backg rounds, that are too brig ht or dar k and aut omatically adjust the m to th e optimum brightness when shootin g. Also, wh en the overall image is lac king in cont rast, the camera wil l automatic ally correct the image for a sh arper impres sion when shoot ing.
Shooting with Slow Synchro 99 You can make t he main subj ect, such a s people, ap pear bright b y having th e camera provi de the approp riate illuminat ion with the f lash. At t he same time, you can u se a slow shutter s peed to br ighten t he backgrou nd that t he light from the flash cannot reach.
100 Just like wit h Exposure Com pensation (p . 73), you can adj ust the exposu re ±2 stops in 1/3-stop in crements w hen using the flash. Choose ~ . ● After pressi ng the m button, press the op buttons to choos e ~ .
