Safety Precautions 10 Other W arning s • Avoid dropping or subjecting the batteries to severe impacts. The above may cause explosions or leaks, resulting in fire, injury and damage to the surroundings.
Safety Precautions 11 Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.). Doing so may cause malfunctions or damage the image sensor. • When using the camera on a beach or at a windy location, be careful not to allow dust or sand to enter the camera.

13 1 Getting Started This chapter ex plains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view and eras e the images you take. T he latter part of this chapter explai ns how to shoot and view images in Easy Mode, how t o shoot and view movies and how to transfer images to a com puter.
14 Use the included c harger t o charge the batt ery. Be sure to charge t he batte ry as it is not char ged at the time of pur chase. Rem ove the cover . Insert the batte ry. ∆ Align the o marks on the batter y an d charger, t hen insert t he battery b y sl iding it in and down .
Charging the Battery 15 Approximate Nu mber of Shots That Can Be T aken • The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, the number of shots that can be taken may be less than mentioned above.

Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 17 Open the cover. ∆ Slide the cov er and ope n it . Insert the ba ttery. ∆ Press the battery loc k in the direction of the arrow, then insert the battery as shown until it locks i nto place with a click. ∆ Be sure to insert the batt ery in the corre ct direct ion or it will not properly l ock into place.
Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 18 Removing the Battery and Me mory Card Remove the ba ttery. ∆ Open the cov er and pre s s the battery lock in the direction of the arro w. The battery wi ll pop up. Remove th e memory ca rd. ∆ Push t he memory card in u ntil you hear a click, then slowly release it.
19 The Date/Time setting s screen will appear the first ti me the camera is turned on. Since the dates and ti mes recorded into your imag es ar e based on th ese setting s, be sure to set them. Turn on t he camera. ∆ Press the po wer button. The Date/T ime screen will appear.
Setting the Date and Time 20 Changin g the Date and Time You can chan ge the current da te and time sett ings. Display th e menu. ∆ Press th e n butt on. Choose [Date/Tim e ] i n the 3 tab. ∆ Press th e qr buttons to cho ose the 3 tab. ∆ Press th e op buttons or tu rn the  dial to cho ose [Date/Ti me], then press the m button.
21 You can chang e the language that displays on the s creen. Enter Playbac k mode. ∆ Press t he 1 button. Display the settings screen. ∆ Press a nd hold the m but ton, the n immediately pre s s th e n button. Set the display lang uage. ∆ Press t he opqr button s or turn the  dial to choose a language , then press the m button.
22 Before y ou use a new me mory card or one that has bee n form atted i n other devices, you s hould format the card with this camera. Formatting (initializing) a memory card eras es all data on the me mory card. As you cannot retrieve t he erased data, exer cise adequat e caution before formatting the memory card.
23 To tak e images that are in focus , be sure to f irst press t he shutte r button lightly (halfway) to focu s, then pr ess full y to shoot. Press halfway (lightly to focus). ∆ Press li ghtly until the c amera bee ps twice and AF fra mes appear where the camera focused.
24 Since t he camer a can dete rmine the subj ect and s hooting conditions, you can let it automatic ally select the best set tings for the scene and just shoot. The camera can als o detect and focus on faces, se tting the color a nd brightne ss to optima l l evels.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 25 Focus. ∆ Press the s hutter butt on halfway to focus . When the camera f ocuses, it will beep twice and A F frames will app ear where t he camera focu sed. Several AF frames will app ear when the camera focu ses on more than one point .
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 26 Under ce rtai n condit ions, the ic on that ap pears may no t matc h the actua l scene. Especial ly when t here i s an orang e or blue co lored ba ckground (a wall for exampl e), [ ] or t he “Inc luding Blue Skies ” icon s may appear an d it ma y not b e possi ble t o shoot with the appr opri ate co lor.
27 You can vi ew the images you have t aken on the screen. Enter Playbac k mode. ∆ Press t he 1 button. The last image you took will appear. Choose an imag e. ∆ Pressing q or turning the  dial counterclo ckwise will cycle through th e images in the reverse order they were taken, from the newest image to the oldest.
28 You can choo se and erase i mages one at a ti me. Please no te that erased images cannot be rec overed. Exer c i se adequate ca ution befor e erasing an image. Enter Playback mode. ∆ Press th e 1 button . The last image you t ook will appear.
29 In Easy mode, operationa l instructions are displ ayed on the screen, an d the camera is s et so that only th e buttons, the zoom lev er and th e movie button (p. 31) exp lained on this page are func tional. This prevents inc orrect operation of the camer a, allowing even be ginners to take worry-fr ee pictures .

Shooting Movies 32 ∆ Yo u can als o zoom in and out wit h the zoom lever during s hooting. ∆ Do not t ouch the microphon e while shooting. ∆ Do no t press an y button s other than the movie butt on while shooting. The sound the butto ns make will be recorded in the movie.

Transferring Images to a Computer for Viewing 37 Transfer and View Images ∆ Click [Impor t Images from Camera], and then click [Import Unt ransferr ed Images]. All images not pre v ious ly transferred will transf er to the comput er. Transferred images will be sorte d by date and saved in separa te folders in th e Pictures fo lder.

Components Guide 43 Control Dial Turning the control dial allows you to perform operations such as choosing items or switching images. Except for a few operations, the s ame operations are possible with the opqr buttons. If you touch the control dial in sh ooting mode, a button descr iption displays on the screen.

Indicator 45 Screen Displa y in Dark Shootin g Conditions The display automatically brightens when shooting in dark conditions, allow ing you to check t he composition (Nigh t Display function). However, th e brightness of the image on the screen, and the brightness of the actual image recorded may be different.
46 Commonly used shoo ting functi ons can be set wit h the ø menu. The menu items and opti ons differ dep ending on the mod e (p. 166). You ca n also use the ø menu in Playback mode. Choose a shooting mode . ∆ Set the mode dia l to t he desired shoot ing mode.

51 Perform lo w level form atting when y ou think th at the recordin g/reading sp eed of a memory ca rd has dropped. Performing a low-level f ormat on (ini tializing) a memory card erases all data on the memory card. As y ou cannot re trieve the erase d data, exerc ise adequate c aution befo re perfo rming a low-level format on the memor y card .
Power Saving Function (Auto Power Down) 52 To save batt ery power, the c amera shuts down aut omatically when it is not operated for a certa in time . Power Saving during Shooting The screen will turn off approximately 1 minute after the camera is last operated.
53 3 Shooting in Special Conditions and Commonly Used Functions This chapter ex plains how to shoot in different c onditions, as well as how to use common functions, such as the self-timer. • When you ch oose a Shooting mode th at matches a par ticular set of conditions, the camera will automati cally select any necessary settings.

Using the Face Self-Timer 63 Join the su bjects and look at the came ra. When the camera de tects a n ew face, t he lamp and soun d will speed up (the lamp remains lit whe n the flash will fir e), and two seconds later the shutter will release. ∆ To canc el sho oting with the t imer after countd own has started, press the p button .

Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 66 Digital Tele-Converter The focal length of the len s can be increased by an equivalent of 1. 7x or 2.1x. This enable s a faster s h utter spe ed and less chanc e of camer a shake tha n the zoo m (includi ng digital z oom) us ed by itself at the s ame zoo m factor.

69 4 Choosing Settings Yourself In this chapt er you will learn how to use the various functions in G mode to p rogressively adv ance your shooting skills.
70 You can choo se the setti ngs for variou s func tions to suit your prefe rences. AE stands for Auto Exposure. Set the mode d ial to G . Adjust the settings acc ording to your purposes ( pp. 70 – 80). Shoot. You can adjust t he standa rd exposure se t by the camera in 1/ 3-stop increments in the range of – 2 to +2.
71 You can make the flash fire ev ery time you s hoot. At maximum wide angle, the flas h range is appro ximately 75 cm – 3.5 m (2.5 – 11.5 f t.), and at maxim um tele photo, i t is 1. 0 – 2. 0 m (3.3 – 6.6 f t.) Magnifying the Focal Point 83 If you press the shut ter button hal fway, the AF frame will ma gnify and you can check the focus. Choose [AF-Point Zoom]. ∆ Press the n button, ch oose the 4 tab, and the n choose t he [AF-Po int Zoom ] menu item. Pres s the qr buttons to choos e [On].

87 You can use manua l focus when auto focus is not possi ble. If you pres s the shutter button halfway a f ter roughly focusin g manually , you can fine tune t he focus. Choose f . ∆ Press t he q button, th en press the qr button s or turn the  dial to choo se f , then p ress the m but ton.

Shooting with Slow Synchro 89 The flash will fire an d when appears, the flash outpu t will be re tained. ∆ If you releas e your fing er from the shu tter button and pre s s th e o button, will disappe ar and the FE will unlock. Compose the scene and shoot.
90 You can set the shutter to t he speed at which you wa nt to shoot. T he camera will set the app ropriate apertu re value for the s hutter speed y ou set. M stands fo r “Time value”. Set the mode d ial to M . Make the s etting. ∆ Turn t he  dial to set the shutter speed.
91 You can set the aperture t o a value at which you want to shoo t. The camera will set the appro priate shutt er speed for the ap erture value you se t. B stands fo r “Ape rture value ”, which refe rs to t he size of the ape rture opening ins ide the lens.
92 You can manually s et the shutter s peed and apert ure to shoot image s. D stand s for “Man ual”. Set the mode d ial to D . Make the s etting. ∆ Press th e o button to cho ose the sh utter speed o r apertur e value. ∆ Turn the  dial to set a val ue.
93 The camer a can detect ar eas in the scene, such as faces or backgroun ds, that are t oo bright or dark and au tomatically adjust them to the opt imum brightnes s when shoo ting. Also, when the overa ll image is lacking in cont rast, the camera will aut omatically correct the image for a sharper impre ssion when sh ooting.
94 You can auto matically correct red-e ye that occurs in images taken wit h the flas h. Choose [Fl ash Settings]. ∆ Press th e n button, choose [Flash Setti ngs] from th e 4 tab and press the m button. Make the s etting. ∆ Press the op buttons or turn the  dial to choose [Red-Eye Corr.
