Safety Precautions 11 Battery Other Warnings • Use only recommended batteries. • Do not place the batteries near or in direct flame. • Do not let the batteries come into contact with water (e.g. sea water) or other liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the batteries.
Safety Precautions 12 Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.). Doing so may cause malfunctions or damage the image sensor. • When using the camera on a beach or at a windy location, be careful not to allow dust or sand to enter the camera.
13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view, erase and print the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and transfer images to a computer.
14 Open the cover. ● Slide and hol d the cover lock , then slide and open the cover as shown. Insert the batteries. ● Insert the batteries w ith (+) and (–) ends oriented co rrectly. Close the cover. ● Close the cove r and p ress downward as you sli de it until it clicks into place .
Inserting the Batteries 15 Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken * The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, the number of shots that can be take n may be less than mentioned above.
16 Check the card’s write-protect tab. ● If the memory card has a write-protect ta b, you will not be able to re cord images i f the tab is in the loc ked position. Slide the tab up until you h ear a click. Open the cover. ● Slide the cover to open it.
Inserting the Memory Card 17 Approximate Nu mber of Shots pe r Memory Card • Values are based on the default settings. • The number of shots that can be taken will vary depending on camera s ettings, the subject and the memory card used. You can check the number of sh ots that can be taken when the camera is in a Shooting mode (p.
18 You can use the LCD monitor to compose pictur es before shooting, oper ate menus or play b ack images. Open the LCD Monitor. Rotate the LCD monitor. ● Rotate it 18 0° toward the lens (turn the to p edge of th e LCD monitor away from yo u). X The displaye d image is auto matically flipped and re versed (Revers e Display function).
19 The Date/Time se ttings screen will appear th e first time th e camera is turn ed on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the ON/OF F button. X The Date/Time screen will ap pear.
Setting the Date and Time 20 Changing the Date and Time You can change the current da te and time set tings. Display the menus. ● Press the n but ton. Choose [Date/Time] in th e 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to choo se the 3 tab. ● Press the op butt ons or turn the  dial to choose [Dat e/Time], then press the m button.
21 You can change the display l anguage in the LCD mon itor menus and messages. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. Display the settings scr een. ● Press and hold the m button , then immediately pr ess the n button . Set the disp lay languag e.
22 Before you us e a new memory card or one that has be en used in other devices, y ou should f ormat the ca rd with this c amera. Formattin g (initializ ing) a memory car d erases all dat a on the memory car d. As you canno t retrieve the erased data, exercise adeq uate cautio n before formatting the memory card.
23 The shutter button has two stops. To take images that ar e in focus, be s ure to first pr ess the shutt er button li ghtly (halfw ay) to focu s, then take the s hot. Press halfway (lightly to the first stop). X The camera auto matically foc uses and selects the ne cessary se ttings for shooting, such as t he bright ness.
24 Since the came ra can determine the subject a nd shooting co nditions, you can let it a utomatically select the best setting s for the s cene and ju st shoot. The camera can a lso detect an d focus on faces , setting t he color and brightness to optimal le vels.
Taking Pictures 25 Focus. ● Press the s hutter butto n halfway to focus. X When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice. X Green AF frames appear where the subject is i n focus. X Several AF fr ames will appear wh en the camera focuse s on more than one point.
Taking Pictures 26 • the camera does not play any sounds? Pressing the l button while turning on the camera power will turn off all sounds except for warning sounds. To turn th e sounds on, press the n button, choose th e 3 tab, and then choose [Mute].
Viewing Images 27 This is the area that will be recorded in a movie. Movies can be shot simply by pressing the movie button, no matter what position the mode dial is in (p. 31) . To hide the frame, choose [Custom Display], th en [Shooting Info] and remove the check mark (p.

31 The camera can a utomatical ly select all se ttings so that you can shoot movies just by pressin g the movi e button. The au dio will reco rd in stere o. If you continue shooting for a long time, the camera may be come warm. This is not a malf unction.
Shooting Movies 32 ● Do not touch th e microphone wh ile shooting. ● Do not pres s any butto ns other than the movie button . Otherwise, th e sound the buttons make will be rec orded in the movie. Stop shooting. ● Press the movi e button agai n.
33 You can view you r movies on the s creen. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou shot will appear. X appears on movi es. Choose a movie. ● Press the qr buttons or turn the  dial to choose a movi e, then press the m button.

Shooting with Slow Synchro 92 Set the exp osure compen sation amount. ● Press the l butt on. ● Press the qr buttons or turn the  dial to adjust t he setting. ● From the expo sure set by th e camera, you can adjust th e amount of compe nsation ±2 stops in 1/ 3-stop incr ements.
93 You can set th e shutter to the speed at whic h you want to sh oot. The camer a will set the a ppropriate aperture v alue for the s hutter spee d you set. M stands for “ Time value” . Set the mode dial to M . Make the setting. ● Turn the  d ial to s et the sh utter spe ed.
