Safety Precautions 10 Battery Other Warnings • Use only recommended batteries. • Do not place the batteries near or in direct flame. • Do not let the batteries come into contact with water (e.g. sea water) or other liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the batteries.
Safety Precautions 11 Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.). Doing so may cause malfunctions or damage the image sensor. • When using the camera on a beach or at a windy location, be careful not to allow dust or sand to enter the camera.

13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view, erase and print the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view images in Easy Mode, how to shoot and view movies and how to transfer images to a computer.
14 Insert the i ncluded ba tteries a nd memory ca rd into the camera. Check the card’s write-protect tab. ● If the memory card has a write-protect ta b, you will not be able to re cord images i f the tab is in the loc ked position. Slide the tab up until you h ear a click.

18 The Date/Time se ttings scre en will appea r the first time the camera is turned on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the powe r button. X The Date/Time screen will appe ar.
Setting the Date and Time 19 Changing the Date an d Time You can change the current da te and time sett ings. Display the menus . ● Press the n but ton. Choose [Date/Time] in th e 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to choo se the 3 tab. ● Press the op butt ons or turn the  dial to choose [Dat e/Time], then press the m button.
20 You can change the display l anguage in the LCD mo nitor menus and messages. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. Display the settings screen . ● Press and hold the m button , then immediately p ress the n butt on . Set the disp lay langua ge.
21 The shutter button has two stops. To take images that ar e in focus, be s ure to first pr ess the shutt er button li ghtly (halfw ay) to focu s, then take the s hot. Press halfway (lightly to the first stop). X The camera auto matically foc uses and selects the ne cessary se ttings for shooting, such as t he bright ness.
22 Since the came ra can determine the subject a nd shooting co nditions, you can let it a utomatically select th e best se ttings for t he scene a nd just sho ot. The camera can a lso detect an d focus on faces , setting t he color and brightness to optimal le vels.
Taking Pictures 23 X Green AF frames appear where the subject is i n focus. X Several AF fr ames will appear wh en the camera focuse s on more than one point. ● If the indic ator ligh ts orange a nd “Raise the flash” a ppears on the sc reen, it is recommended to shoot wi th the flas h.
Taking Pictures 24 • the image comes out dark even if t he flash fired when shooting? The subj ect is too fa r away fo r the flas h to reach. Shoot wit hin the effective fl ash range of approximat ely 50 cm – 4.0 m (1.6 – 13 ft.) at maximum wide angle, and approximately 1.
25 You can view you r images on the s creen. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will appear. Choose an image. ● Pressing the q button will cycle through the images in reverse o rder. ● Pressing t he r button will cycle thr ough the images in the order they were taken.
26 You can ch oose and erase image s one at a t ime. Pleas e note that erased images canno t be recovered . Exercise ad equate caution before erasing an image. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will appear. Choose an image to erase .

Printing Images 28 Choose an image to print. ● Press the qr buttons or turn the  dial to choose an ima ge, then pres s the m button. 29 The explanat ions of camera o perations an d behavior be low are basical ly the same as in “ Taking Pic tures” (p. 2 2) except that oper ational i nstructions appear on the screen, and th e camera is set s o that only th e buttons explained on this page are functional .
30 The explanat ions for viewi ng or erasing unwanted images are basically t he same as in “Vie wing Images” ( p. 25) and “Eras ing Images” (p . 26) except that operat ional instru ctions appea r on the screen, and the camera is set so that only th e buttons e xplained o n this page are fun ctional.
31 The camera can a utomatical ly select all se ttings so that you can shoot movies just by pressing the sh utter button. Choose E mode. ● Set the mode dial to E . Compose the shot. ● Moving the zoom lev er toward i will zoom in on your sub ject, making it appear larger.

52 Before you use a new memory card or one that has been used in other devices, you should f ormat the card with thi s camera. Formattin g (initializing) a memory card erases al l data on the memory ca rd. As you cannot retrieve the erased data, exercise adequat e caution before formatting the memory card.
Formatting Memory Cards 53 Low Level Format Perform low level form atting whe n you think that the recording/ reading speed of a memory card has drop ped. ● Follow Steps 1 – 2 to di splay the [Format ] screen. ● Press the op butt ons or turn the  dial to choose [Low Level Format], then press the qr buttons to d isplay .
54 To save batte ry power, the camera shuts dow n automaticall y when it is not operated for a ce rtain time. Power Saving during Sho oting The monitor will turn off ap proximately 1 mi nute after t he camera is la st operated. A fter about 2 mor e minutes, t he lens will re tract and t he power will turn off.
55 Shooting in Special Conditions and Commonly Used Functions This chapter explains how to shoot in different conditions, as well as how to use common functions, such as the flash and self-timer. • When you choose a Shooting mode t hat matches a part icular set o f condition s, the camera will automatica lly select any n ecessary set tings.

60 You can us e the digit al zoom to zoom up t o a maximum of 40x and capture subjects th at are too far away for the opt ical zoom (p . 22) to e nlarge. The images may appe ar coarse, how ever, depend ing on the reco rding pixel setting (p . 68) and the zoom fa ctor used.

Changing the Compression Ratio (Image Quality) 69 Approximate Values for Reco rding Pixels and Compression Ratio • The values in the table are measured accordin g to Canon standards and may change depending on the subject, memory card and camera settings.

Shooting Using the Two Second Self-Timer 74 Custom Color The contrast , sharpness and co lor saturation in an image can be chosen and set from 5 different le vels. ● Follow Step 2 on p. 73 to cho ose , then press the l button. ● Press the op b uttons to choose an option, the n press the qr buttons or turn the  dial to choose a value.

86 You can make t he main subj ect, such a s people, appe ar bright b y having the camera provi de the appr opriate illumin ation with t he flash. At the same time, you can u se a slow shutter s peed to br ighten the background that th e light from the flash cannot reach.
87 You can set th e shutter to the speed at whic h you want to sh oot. The camer a will set the a ppropriate aperture v alue for the shutter speed you set. M stands for “ Time value” . Set the mode dial to M . Make the setting. ● Turn the  d ial to s et the sh utter spe ed.
