9 • Before using the camera, please ensure that you read the safety precau tions described below. Always en sure that the camera is operated correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pa ges are intended to pre vent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipme nt.
Safety Precautions 10 Battery, Battery Charger Other Warnings • Use only recommended batteries. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Do not let the battery come into cont act with water (e.g. sea water) or other liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the battery.
Safety Precautions 11 • Do not allow dirt or metal objects (such as pins or keys) to contact the charge r terminals or plug. This could result in electrical shock, fire or other damage. • Playing back for a long time may cause feelings of discomfort.
Safety Precautions 12 • When putting the camera in your bag, ensure that hard objects do not come into contact with the LCD monitor. • Do not attach accessories to the strap.
13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view, erase and print the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and transfer images to a computer.
14 Use the incl uded charger t o charge the bat tery. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ● Align the S marks on the battery and charger, t hen inse rt the b attery by sliding it in and down . Charge the battery. ● For CB-2LV: Fl ip out the plug and plug the charger i nto a power out let .
Charging the Battery 15 Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken • The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Ima ging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, fewer shots can be taken.
16 Insert the i ncluded batte ry and a memor y card into the camera. Check the card’s write-protect tab. ● If the memory card has a write-protect tab, you will not be able to re cord image s if the tab is in the loc ked positio n. Slide the t ab up until you h ear a click .
Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 17 Close the cover. ● Close the cove r , and slide it until it locks into place with a cl ick. Removing the Batt ery and Memory Card Remove the battery. ● Open the cove r and press the bat tery lock in the direc tion of the arro w.
Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 18 Approximate Number of Shots per Memory Card • Values are based on the default settings. • The number of shots that can be taken will vary depending on camera s ettings, the subject and the memory card used.
19 The Date/Time se ttings screen will appear the first time the c amera is turned on. Since th e dates and time s recorded int o your image s are based on t hese settings, b e sure to set them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the power button. The Date/Time screen will ap pear.
Setting the Date and Time 20 Changing the Date and Time You can change the curren t date and time settings. Display the menus. ● Press the n butt on. Select [Date/Time] in the 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons t o select the 3 tab. ● Press the op buttons or turn the  dial to select [Date /Time], then pres s the m button.
21 You can change the langua ge displayed in the LCD monito r menus and messages. Set the playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. Display the settings scr een. ● Press and hold the m button , then immediately pr ess the n button . Set the disp lay languag e.
22 Before you us e a new memory car d or one that ha s been used in other devices, yo u should for mat the card wi th this camera . Formatting ( initializing) a memory car d erases all d ata on the memory card. A s you cannot retrieve the erased da ta, exercis e adequate caution befo re formatti ng the memory card.
23 The shutter button has two stops. T o take images that are in fo cus, be sur e to first pr ess the shu tter button lightly (halfway) to focus, th en take the s hot. Press halfway (lightly to the first stop) . The camera focu ses and auto matically selects the ne cessary setti ngs for shooting, such as the br ightness .
24 Since the came ra can dete rmine the subjec t and shoot ing conditi ons, you can let it a utomatically select the be st settings for the sce ne and just s hoot. The camera can a lso detect and focus on faces, sett ing the color and brightness to optimal leve ls.
A Taking Pictures 25 Focus. ● Press the s hutter butto n halfway to fo cus. When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and the indicato r will light gr een (orange when t he flash will fire). Green AF frames appear where th e subject is i n focus.
A Taking Pictures 26 • The indicator blinks green and the camera beeps once when the shutter button is pressed halfway? Your subject is too close. Whe n the camera is at maximum wide angle, move about 2 cm (0.79 in.) or more away from your subject and shoot .
27 You can view you r images on t he screen. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. The last image y ou took will ap pear. Select an image. ● Pressing t he q button wi ll cycle thr ough the images in r everse ord er. ● Pressing t he r button will cycle t hrough the images in the order th ey were take n.
1 Viewing Images 28 Active Display If you tilt the camera ge ntly from your wrist a s shown in t he illust ration bel ow, you can switch the images you are viewin g. • Depending on how you tilt the camera, images may not switch. • Be careful not to accidentally bang people.
29 You can selec t and erase im ages one at a ti me. Please not e that erased images canno t be recover ed. Exercise adequate c aution befor e erasing an image. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. The last image y ou took will ap pear.

Printing Images 31 Print images. ● Press the m button, and use the op buttons or turn the  d ial to select c , then press th e m button. The print sel ection sc reen appears. ● Press the op but tons to selec t [Print ], then press th e m button.
32 The camera can a utomatica lly select al l settings so that you can shoot movies just by pressing the shutter button . If you continue shooting for a long time, the camera may become warm . This is not a malfunct ion. Set the mode switch to E . Select the E mode.
E Shooting Movies 33 Shoot. ● Press the shutter butto n fully. The camera will st art shooting t he movie, and [ Rec] and the elapsed ti me will appear on the s creen.

55 Shooting in Special Conditions and Commonly Used Functions This chapter explains how to shoot in different conditions, as well as how to use other common functions, such as the flash and se lf-timer. • When you select a mode that match es a particul ar set of co nditions, the camera will automatic ally select any ne cessary settings .
56 The camera wil l select the necessar y settings for the co nditions in which you wish to shoot when you sele ct the matchi ng mode. Set the mode switch to 4 (p. 42). Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 61 Digital Tele-Converter The focal le ngth of the lens can be i ncreased by an equivalen t of 1.5x or 2.0x. This enables a faster shutter speed and l ess chance of camera sha ke than the zoo m (including digital z oom) used by its elf at the same zoom factor.
