Safety Precautions 11 Other Warnings • Avoid dropping or subjecting the battery to severe impacts. This may cause explosions or leaks, resulting in fire, injury and damage to the surroundings.
Safety Precautions 12 • When using the flash, be careful not to cover it with your fingers or clothing. This could result in burns or damage to the flash. • Take care not to pinch your finger when the flash lowers. This could result in injury. Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.
13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view, erase and print the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and transfer images to a computer.
14 Use the incl uded char ger to cha rge the bat tery. Be sure to charge the battery as it is not c harged at the ti me of purchase. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ● Align the S marks on the battery and charger, t hen insert the batt ery by sli ding it in and down .
Charging the Battery 15 Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken * The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, the number of shots that can be take n may be less than mentioned above.
16 Insert the i ncluded ba ttery and a memory card into the camera. Check the card’s write-protect tab. ● If the memory card has a write-protect tab, you will not be able to re cord images i f the tab is in th e locked p osition. Sli de the ta b up until you h ear a click.
Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 17 Removing the Batt ery and Memory Card Remove the battery. ● Open the cove r and press the battery lock in the direc tion of the arro w. X The battery will pop up. Remove the memory ca rd. ● Push the memory card i n until you hear a click, then slowly re lease it.

19 The Date/Time se ttings scre en will appea r the first time the camera is turned on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the power button. X The Date/Time screen will ap pear.
Setting the Date and Time 20 Changing the Date and Time You can change the current da te and time set tings. Display the menu. ● Press the n butt on. Choose [Date/Time] in th e 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to choo se the 3 tab. ● Press the op buttons or turn the Ê dial to choose [Dat e/Time], then press the m button.
21 You can change the display l anguage in the LCD monitor menus and messages. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. Display the settings scr een. ● Press and hold the m button , then immediately pr ess the n button . Set the disp lay languag e.
22 Before you us e a new memory card or one that has be en used in other devices, y ou should f ormat the card with this camera. Formattin g (initializ ing) a memory car d erases all d ata on the memory card. As you canno t retrieve the erased dat a, exercise a dequate caut ion before formatting the memory card.
23 The shutter button has two stops. To ta ke images that are in focus, be sure to first pr ess the shutt er button li ghtly (hal fway) to focu s, then take t he shot. Press halfway (lightly to the first stop). X The camera auto matically foc uses and selects the ne cessary se ttings for shooting, such as the brig htness.
24 Since the came ra can determi ne the subject a nd shooting co nditions, you can let it a utomatically select th e best se ttings for t he scene a nd just sho ot. The camera can a lso detect an d focus on faces , setting t he color and brightness to optimal le vels.
Taking Pictures 25 Focus. ● Press the s hutter butto n halfway to focus (The flash wi ll rise auto matically in da rk environment s). X When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and the indicator wi ll light gree n (orange when t he flash will f ire).
Taking Pictures 26 • a flashing appears? Attach the camera to a tripod so that t he camera does not move and blur the image. • the camera does not play any sounds? Pressing the l button while turning on the camera power will turn off all sounds except for warning sounds.
Viewing Images 27 You can view you r images on the s creen. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will appear. Choose an image. ● Pressing t he q button wi ll cycle throu gh the images in r everse order . ● Pressing t he r button will cycl e through the images in the order they were taken.
28 You can choose and erase ima ges one at a time. Pl ease note tha t erased images canno t be recovered . Exercise ad equate caution before erasi ng an image. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will appear. Choose an image to erase .

Printing Images 30 Print images. ● Press the c button. X Printing will start. ● If you want to print additio nal images, repeat Steps 5 and 6 after pr inting has completed. ● After prin ting has comple ted, turn o ff the camera and p rinter, an d unplug th e interface ca ble.
31 The camera can a utomatical ly select all se ttings so th at you can shoot movies just by pressing the sh utter butt on. Set the mode dial to E . Compose the shot. ● Moving the zoom lev er toward i will zoom in on your sub ject, making it appear larger.
Shooting Movies 32 Shoot. ● Press the shut ter button fully. X The camera will st art shooting the movie, and [ Rec] and the elapsed t ime will appear on the s creen.
33 You can view you r movies on the s creen. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou shot will appear. X appears on movi es. Choose a movie. ● Press the qr buttons or turn the Ê di al to choose a movie, then press th e m button.
34 You can use the included sof tware to tran sfer your came ra images to a computer. I f you are already using ZoomBr owser EX/Image Browser/Digi tal Photo Profe ssional, inst all the soft ware from the inc luded CD-ROM, overwriting y our curr ent installa tion.

Shooting in Various Conditions 58 w Take shots o f people at the be ach (Beach) ● Lets you t ake brigh t shots o f people on sandy beach es where the refl ected sunlight is st rong.
Shooting with Faded Colors (Nostalgic) 59 This effect fades the colors and roughens the image so that yo u can take a picture th at seems to be many yea rs old. You can choose from 5 ef fect levels. Choose . ● Use Step 2 on p. 56 to choose . Apply the effect.
60 The ISO speed wi ll be set auto matically bet ween ISO320 and I SO12800. Depending o n the scen e, the ISO sp eed will be s et higher and the sh utter speed fast er than in A mode so that you can sh oot in dark pl aces with reduced camera s hake and subjec t blur.
61 You can shoot with the flash tu rned off. Press the r button. Choose ! . ● Press the qr buttons or turn th e Ê dial to choose ! , then press the m button. X If the flas h has been raised, the flash wil l lower automatic ally. X ! will appea r on the scre en.
62 You can us e the digit al zoom to zoom up t o a maximum of 15x and capture subjects th at are too far away for the opt ical zoom (p . 24) to e nlarge. The images may appe ar coarse, how ever, depe nding on the re cording pixe l setting (p . 72) and the zoom fa ctor used.
Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 63 To turn off the digital zoom, press the n but ton, choose the 4 tab, and choose [Digital Zoom] and the [ Off] option. Digital Tele-Converter The focal le ngth of the le ns can be incr eased by an equi valent of 1.
64 You can shoot using preset focal le ngths of 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm or 105mm (35mm film equivalents) . This featur e is useful whe n you want to shoot at a particu lar focal length . Choose a focal length. ● Turn the Ï ring . X Turn the Ï ring counter cloc kwise until you hear a cli cking sound and the focal length changes from 28mm to 35mm.
65 You can inser t the shooting d ate and time in the lower right corner of an image. Once in serted, ho wever, the y cannot b e deleted. B e sure t o check beforehand that the d ate and ti me are corr ectly set (p. 19). Choose [Date Stamp]. ● Press the n butt on.
66 Use the self ti mer for pictures where the photo grapher is also included in t he shot. You can se t the time delay be tween whe n the shutte r button is presse d and the shot is taken (0 – 3 0 seconds) and also the number of shots (1 – 10 shots).
Using the Face Self-Timer 67 • Exposure and white balance se ttings are set with the fir st shot. • When you set th e time delay for more than 2 seconds, the self-t imer lamp and sound speed up 2 seconds before the shutte r releases (when the flash will fire, the lamp lights).
Using the Face Self-Timer 68 Join the subjects and look at the cam era. X When the camer a detects a new fac e, the lamp and sound wi ll speed up (the lamp remains lit wh en the flas h will fir e), and two seconds late r the shutt er will release . ● To cancel shoo ting with th e self-timer after countdown h as starte d, press the p button.

Changing the Compression Ratio (Image Quality) 73 Approximate Values for Reco rding Pixels and Compression Ratio • The values in the table are measured according to Canon standards an d may change depending on the subject, memory card and camera settings.
74 A RAW image is raw data recorded wi th nearly no det erioration in i mage quality resulting f rom image p rocessing in side the cam era. You can use the sup plied software to broadly a djust the im age with min imal loss i n image qual ity. Choose .
Shooting Close-ups (Macro) 75 You can shoot an object at a cl ose distance or even shoot extr eme close- ups of it. Th e shooting ra nge is approxi mately 5 – 50 cm (2.0 in. – 1.6 f t.) from the end of the lens (when the zoom lever is p ushed to maximum j ).
76 Choose the ISO spee d. ● Turn the Ï ring to choose the I SO speed. • Lowering the ISO speed results in sharp er images, but there may be an increased chance of image blurring in certain shooti ng conditions.
77 The white balance (WB ) function sets the optimal white b alance f or natural looking co lors. Choose the white ba lance. ● After pressi ng the m button, press th e op buttons to choos e . Choose an option. ● Press the qr buttons or turn the Ê dial to choose an option, then press the m button.

Shooting Using a TV Monitor 81 Custom Color The contra st, sharpne ss, color s aturation, r ed, green, bl ue, and ski n tones in an image can be c hosen and set fr om 5 differen t levels. ● Follow Ste p 2 on p . 8 0 to cho ose , t hen press the l button.
82 While you keep the shutter button pressed ha lfway, the f ocus and exposu re are locked. You can now recomp ose and shoot. This is called Fo cus Lock. Focus. ● Center the su bject you want in focus, and press the shu tter button hal fway. ● Confirm that a green AF Frame app ears around the subject.

84 You can change the AF (Auto Focu s) frame mode to match the conditi ons you want to s hoot. Choose [AF Frame]. ● Press the n button, choose the 4 tab, and then choose the [AF Frame] menu item.
Magnifying the Focal Point 85 You can pu sh the shu tter butt on halfway to magnif y the AF frame and c heck the focus. Choose [AF-Poi nt Zoom]. ● Press the n button, choose the 4 tab, and then choose the [A F-Point Zoom] menu item. Pres s the qr buttons to choose [On].
86 The focus can be loc ked. After l ocking the focus, th e focal dis tance will n ot change ev en when you release your finger from the s hutter butt on. Lock the focus. ● Keep the shutt er button pres sed halfway and press the q button . X and the MF indicator appear.
87 While the shu tter button is pressed half way, the focu s and exposure wi ll continue t o adjust, al lowing you to tak e pictures of moving subjec ts without missing a sh ot. Choose [Servo AF]. ● Press the n button a nd choose [Servo AF] from the 4 tab , and press the qr buttons to cho ose [On].
