8 • Before using the camera, please ensure that you read the safety precau tions described below. Always en sure that the camera is operated correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pa ges are intended to pre vent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipme nt.
Safety Precautions 9 Battery, Battery Charger Other Warnings • Use only recommended batteries. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Do not let the battery come into cont act with water (e.g. sea water) or other liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the battery.
Safety Precautions 10 • Do not allow dirt or metal objects (such as pins or keys) to contact the charg er terminals or plug. This could result in electrical shock, fire or other damage. Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.
11 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view, erase and print the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and transfer images to a computer.
12 Use the incl uded charger t o charge the bat tery. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ● Align the S marks on the bat tery and charger, t hen inse rt the bat tery by sliding i t in and down . Charge the battery. ● For CB-2LY: Fl ip out the plug and plu g the charger i nto a power out let .
Charging the Battery 13 Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken * The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting co nditions, fewer shots can be taken.
14 Insert the i ncluded batte ry and a memor y card into the camera. Check the card’s write-protect tab. ● If the memory ca rd has a write-pro tect tab, you will not be able to re cord image s if the tab is in the loc ked positio n. Slide the t ab up until you h ear a click .

Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 16 Approximate Number of Shots per Memory Card • Values are based on the default settings. • The number of shots th at can be taken will vary depending on camera settings, the subject and the memory card used.
17 The Date/Time se ttings screen will appear the first time the c amera is turned on. Since th e dates and time s recorded int o your image s are based on the se settings, b e sure to set them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the po wer butto n. X The Date/ Time scree n will appear .
Setting the Date and Time 18 Changing the Date and Time You can change the curren t date and time settings. Display the menus. ● Press the n but ton. Select [Date/Time] in the 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to s elect the 3 tab. ● Press the op b uttons to selec t [Date / Time], then pres s the m button.
19 You can change the langua ge displayed in the LCD monito r menus and messages. Set the playback mode. ● Press the 1 bu tton. 20 Before you us e a new memory car d or one that ha s been used in other devices, yo u should for mat the card wi th this camera . Formatting ( initializing) a memory car d erases all d ata on the memory card. A s you cannot retrieve the erased da ta, exercis e adequate caution befo re formatti ng the memory card.
21 The shutter button has two stops. T o take images th at are in fo cus, be sure to first pr ess the shu tter button lightly (ha lfway) to focus, th en take the shot . Press halfway (lightly to the first stop) . X The camer a focuses an d automatica lly selects the ne cessary setti ngs for shooting, such as the br ightness.
22 Since the came ra can determi ne the subjec t and shoot ing conditi ons, you can let it a utomatically select the be st settings for the sce ne and just s hoot. The camera can a lso detect and focus on faces, sett ing the color and brightness to optimal leve ls.
A Taking Pictures 23 Focus. ● Press the shu tter button halfway to focu s. X When the camera focu ses, it will bee p twice and the indicato r will light gr een (orange when t he flash will fire). X Green AF f rames appear whe re the subject is i n focus.
A Taking Pictures 24 • The image comes out dark even if the flash fired when shooting? The subj ect is too far away for the f lash to reach. Shoot within the effect ive flash range of approximate ly 30 cm – 4.2 m (12 in. – 14 ft.) at maximum wide angle, and approximately 30 cm – 2.
25 You can view you r images on t he screen. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 bu tton. X The last image you t ook will appear. Select an image. ● Pressing the q butt on will cycl e through the images in r everse order . ● Pressing the r button will cycle throu gh the images in the order th ey were take n.
26 You can selec t and erase im ages one at a ti me. Please not e that erased images canno t be recover ed. Exercis e adequate caut ion before e rasing an image. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 bu tton. X The last image you t ook will appear.

E Shooting Movies 30 Shoot. ● Press the s hutter butt on fully. X The camer a will start sho oting the movie, and [ Rec.] and the elapsed time wi ll appear on the s creen.
31 You can view you r movies on the s creen. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 bu tton. X The last image you s hot will appea r. X appears on movies. Select a movie. ● Press the qr buttons to s elect a movi e, then press th e m button. X The movi e control panel wil l appear o n the screen.

Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 57 Digital Tele-Converter The focal le ngth of the lens can be i ncreased by an eq uivalen t of 1.4x or 2.3x. This enables a faster shutter speed and l ess chance of camera sha ke than the zoo m (including digital z oom) used by its elf at the same zoom factor.
58 You can inser t the shooti ng date and time in the lower ri ght corner of an image. Once in serted, ho wever, they cannot be d eleted. Be su re to chec k beforehand that the date and time ar e correctly set (p. 17). Select [Date Stamp]. ● Press the n but ton.
