5 Handling Precautions T est Shots Before you try to photograph important subjects, we highly recommend that you shoot several trial images to confirm that the camera is operating and being operated correctly .
6 Vide o Format Please set the camera's video signal format to the one used in your region before u sing it with a TV monitor (p. 1 16). Language Sett ing Please see the Basic Guide (p. 5) to change the language setting. z Before using t he camera, please ens ure that you read and understand the safety precautions described below .
7 War n in g s Equipm ent z Store this equipment ou t of the reach of children and i nfants. Acciden tal damage by a child coul d result in serio us injury . • Neck strap: Placement of the strap around the child's neck could result in asphyxiation.
8 Batter y z Do not place th e battery near a heat source or expose it to direct flame or heat. z The battery should not be immersed in w ater . z Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the batt ery . z A vo id dropping or subjecting the batteries to severe imp acts that could damag e the casing.
9 Others z Do not trigger the flash in close pro ximity to human or animal eyes. Exposure to the intense light produced by the flash may damage eyesight.
10 Cauti ons Equipm ent z Do not get the camera caught on other objects or subject it to strong impact s or shocks when w earing or holding it b y the neck strap. Doing so may result in injury or damage to the camera. z Do not store the equipment in humid or dusty areas.
11 Flash z Do not op erate the flash with dirt, dust or other items stu ck to the surface of the flash. z Be careful not to cover the flash w ith your fingers or clothing when sho oting. The flash may be damaged and emit s moke or noise. The res ulting heat build-up could damage the flash.

24 When traveling abroad, you can record images with local dates and times simply by switching the time zone set ting if you pre-register the destination time zones. 39 Shooting The image stabilizer function allows y ou to minimize the cam era shake effect (blurred images) when you shoot dis t ant subjects that have been magnified or when you shoot in dark conditions. 46 Using the Mode D ial No matter what position the mode dial is in, you can shoot movies *1 with just a pus h of the Movie button. Y ou can select the movie rec ording pixels and frame rate (p. 48) and shoot with color effects s uch as Color Accent, Color Swap, and My Colors.
Using the Mod e Dial 47 z Y ou are recommended to use a memory card that has been formatted in your camera to shoot movies (p. 35). The card supplied with the camer a may be use d without further formatting. z Be careful of the following while recording.
48 z When movie recording is stopped in any mode dial except , the still image s ettings return to the settings before movie shooting began. AE lock (p. 70) and exp osure shift, however , are disabled. z QuickTime 3.0 or later is required to play back m ovies (Data type: A VI/Compression method: Motion JPEG ) on a computer .

Using the Mod e Dial 53 Y ou can easily c hange the colors in an image when it is shot for both stills and movies, allowing you to enjoy producing various ef fects. Depending on the shooting conditions, however , the images may appear rough, or you may not get the expected color .

58 Setting the Shutter Speed When you set the shutter speed in the shutter s peed-priority AE mode, the c amera automatically selects an aperture v alue to match the brightness.
Using the Mod e Dial 59 Shutter Speed Display z The number s in t he table below indicat e the s hutte r spee d in se conds. 1/160 indicates 1/160 second. Also, quote marks indi cate the decimal place, so that 0"3 indicates 0. 3 second and 2" indica tes 2 seconds.
60 Aper ture Setting Display z The larger the aper ture value the smaller the lens opening, allowin g less light to enter the camera. z Y ou can change the combinations of shutter speeds and aperture values without alte ring the exposure (p.

Advanced Shooting Func tions 63 The AF frame indicates the area of the composition on which t he camera focuses and can be set manually to the desired area. This is convenient for focusing accurately on your chosen subject to obt ain the composition you desire.

Advanced Shooting Func tions 69 Raise the ISO s peed when you wish to reduce the effects of shaking hands and shoot with the flash off in a dar k area or when you wish to reduce the effects of a moving subjec t and raise the s hutter speed. 1 Pr ess the IS O button to sw itch settings.
70 Y ou c an set the exposur e and focus separately . This is effective when the contrast is too strong between the subject and background or when a subject is backlit. 1 Focus on the pa r t of the subject on which you wish to lock the exposure setting.
Advanced Shooting Func tions 71 Changing shutter speed and aper tur e value combinations Automatically selected combinations of shutter speeds and aperture values can be freely changed without altering t he exposure (Program Shift). 1 T urn the mode dial to , , or .
72 Y ou c an obtain the correct expos ure regardless of the location of your subject in the c omposition. 1 Raise the flash . 2 Press the button and set it to (flash on). 3 Focus on th e part of the subject o n which you wish to lock t he flash exp osure setting.

Advanced Shooting Func tions 75 *Cannot be set in and modes. Adjust the exposure compensation setting to avoid making a subject too dark when it is backlit or shot against a bright background, or to avoid making lights appear t oo bright in night shots.

Advanced Shooting Func tions 77 Normally , the (Auto) white balance setting select s an optimal white balance. When the (Auto) setting cannot produce natural looking colors, change the white balance using a setting appropriate to the light source. Whit e Balance Settings 1 FUNC.
78 Using the Custom W hite Bala nce Y ou c an set a custom w hite balance to obtain the optimal setting for the shooting condit ions by having the camera evaluate an object, such as a piece of white p aper or cloth that you wish to establish as the standard white c olor .
Advanced Shooting Func tions 79 z Y ou are recommended to set the shooting mode to and the exposure compensation setting to zero ( ± 0) before setting a custom w hite balance. The correct white balance may not be obtained when the exposure setting is incorrect ( image appears completely black or white).
80 Y ou c an alter the overall impression of an image and s hoot. My Colors Settings * If th e image co ntains colors tha t are the sam e as huma n skin, those colo rs will also be changed. Also you m ay not obtain the expected r esults depending o n the skin color.

Advanced Shooting Func tions 87 Y our cam era is equipped with an Intelligent Orientat ion sensor t hat detects the orientation of an image shot with the camer a held vertically and automatically rotates it t o the correct orientation when viewing it in t he LCD monitor (or viewfinder).
