9 • Before using the camera, please ensure that you read the safety precau tions described below. Always en sure that the cam era is operated correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intended to prevent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipme nt.
Safety Precautions 10 Battery, Battery Charger Other Warnings • Use only recommended batteries. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Do not let the battery come into cont act with water (e.g. sea water) or other liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the battery.
Safety Precautions 11 • Do not allow dirt or metal objects (such as pins or keys) to contact the charge r terminals or plug. This could result in electrical shock, fire or other damage. • Playing back for a long time may cause feelings of discomfort.

13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view, erase and print the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and transfer images to a computer.
14 Use the incl uded charger to char ge the batter y. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ● Align the S marks on the battery and charger, t hen insert the batt ery by sli ding it in and down . Charge the battery. ● For CB-2LV: Fl ip out the plu g and plug the charger i nto a power outle t .
Charging the Battery 15 Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken • The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Ima ging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, fewer shots can be taken.
16 Insert the i ncluded ba ttery and a memory card into the camera. Check the card’s write-protect tab. ● If the memory card has a write-protect tab, you will not be able to re cord images i f the tab is in the loc ked positio n. Slide the tab up until you h ear a click.
Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 17 Close the cover. ● Close the cove r , and slide it unti l it locks into place with a click. Removing the Batt ery and Memory Card Remove the battery. ● Open the cove r and press the battery lock in the direc tion of the arro w.
Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 18 Approximate Number of Shots per Memory Card • Values are based on the default settings. • The number of shots that can be taken will vary depending on camera s ettings, the subject and the memory card used.
19 The Date/Time se ttings scre en will appea r the first time the camera is turned on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the power button. The Date/Time screen will ap pear.
Setting the Date and Time 20 Changing the Date and Time You can change the current da te and time set tings. Display the menus. ● Press the n but ton. Select [Date/Time] in the 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to selec t the 3 tab. ● Press the op butt ons or turn the  dial to select [Date /Time], then pr ess the m button.
21 You can change the language d isplayed in t he LCD monitor men us and messages. Set the playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. Display the settings scr een. ● Press and hold the m button , then immediately pr ess the n button . Set the disp lay languag e.
22 Before you us e a new memory card or one that has be en used in other devices, yo u should format the c ard with this camera. Formatting (in itializing) a memory car d erases all data on th e memory card. As you c annot retrieve the erased da ta, exercise ad equate cau tion before fo rmatting the memo ry card.
23 The shutter button has two stops. To ta ke images that are in focus, be sure to first pr ess the shutt er button li ghtly (hal fway) to focu s, then take t he shot. Press halfway (lightly to the first stop) . The camera focu ses and automat ically selects the ne cessary settings for shooting, such as the brig htness.
24 Since the came ra can determi ne the subject a nd shooting co nditions, you can let it a utomatically select th e best settings for t he scene and just sho ot. The camera can a lso detect an d focus on faces , setting t he color and brightness to optimal levels.
A Taking Pictures 25 Focus. ● Press the s hutter button halfway to focus. When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and the indicator wi ll light gree n (orange when t he flash will f ire). Green AF frames appear where the subject is i n focus.
A Taking Pictures 26 • The indicator blinks green and the camera beeps once when the shutter button is pressed halfway? Your subject is too close. Whe n the camera is at maximum wide angle , move about 2 cm (0.79 in.) or more away from your subject and shoot .
27 You can view you r images on the s creen. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. The last image y ou took will appear. Select an image. ● Pressing t he q button wi ll cycle throu gh the images in r everse order . ● Pressing t he r button will cycle thr ough the images in the order they were taken.
1 Viewing Images 28 Active Display If you tilt the camera ge ntly from yo ur wrist as s hown in the il lustration b elow, you can switch the images you are vie wing. • Depending on how you tilt the camera, images may not switch. • Be careful not to accidentally bang people.
29 You can selec t and erase imag es one at a time. Pl ease note that erased images canno t be recovered . Exercise ade quate caution before erasi ng an image. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. The last image y ou took will appear.
30 You can eas ily print the images you have t aken if you connect the camera to a PictBrid ge compliant pri nter (sold sepa rately). Items to Prep are • Camera and Pict Bridge compl iant printer ( sold separat ely) • Interface c able supplied with th e camera Turn off the camera and p rinter.
Printing Images 31 Print images. ● Press the m button, and use the op buttons or turn the  dial to selec t c , then press th e m button. The print sel ection scre en appears. ● Press the op butt ons to s elect [Pr int], then press th e m button.
32 The camera can a utomatical ly select all se ttings so th at you can shoot movies just by pressing the shutter b utton. If you co ntinue shooting for a lo ng time, the camera may become warm . This is not a m alfunctio n. Set the mode switch to E .
E Shooting Movies 33 Shoot. ● Press the shutter bu tton fully. The camera will st art shooting the movie, and [ Rec] and the elapsed ti me will appear on the s creen.

52 Perform low level formatting whe n you think that the recording/reading speed of a memor y card has dropp ed. Low level f ormatting a me mory card completely e rases all data on the memory card. As you c annot retri eve the erased data , exercis e adequate caut ion before low level forma tting the memory card.
53 To save ba ttery powe r, the camera shuts down automatically when it is not operated for a ce rtain time. Power Saving during Sho oting The monitor will turn off approximately 1 mi nute after the camera is la st operated. A fter about 2 more minutes, t h e lens will re tract and the power wi ll turn off.

55 Shooting in Special Conditions and Commonly Used Functions This chapter explains how to shoot in different conditions, as well as how to use other common functions, such as the flash and se lf-timer. • When you select a mode that match es a particula r set of condit ions, the camera will automatic ally select any necessary sett ings.
56 The camera wil l select t he necessary s ettings for t he conditi ons in which yo u wish to shoot when you select the matching mode. Set the mode switch to 4 (p. 42) . 60 You can us e the digital zoom to zoom up to a maximum of 16x and capture subjects th at are too far away for the opt ical zoom (p. 24) to enl arge. The images may appe ar coarse, how ever, depe nding on the re cording pixe l setting (p. 70) and th e zoom factor us ed.
Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 61 Digital Tele-Converter The focal le ngth of the le ns can be incr eased by an equi valent of 1.5x or 2.0x. This enables a faster sh utter speed and less chance of camera shak e than the zoo m (including digital zoom) us ed by itself at the same zoom factor.

69 You can zoom in on close subjec ts. The possi ble shooting range is approximat ely 2 – 10 cm (0.79 – 3.9 in.) from th e end of the len s. However, you can zoom in even closer on t he subject usi ng the digital zoom. The digita l zoom may cause ima ges to appear co arse at some rec ording pixel settin gs (p.
