The basic function of sh utter sp eed is to pro vide correct exp osure, but you can also use it to con trol the expression of y our sub ject’s motion and to con trol the effect of camera mo vemen t.
11.2 Blurring the Sub ject’s Motion 11 HO W TO CHOOSE A SHUTT ER SPEED 11.2 Blurring the Sub ject’s Motion Blurring part of the picture can giv e a convincing sense of action. T o blur the sub- ject, simply set a sh utter sp eed whic h is to o slo w to freeze its action.
12 APER TURE Blurring part of the picture can heigh ten the sense of action. In most cases, ho w- ev er, image blur is undesirable. T o a v oid blurred pictures from camera mo vemen t, c ho ose a sh utter sp eed of at least 1/60 sec. for handheld sho oting with a standard lens.
12 APER TURE The smaller the ap erture, the wider the range of sharpness. This is illustrated b y the picture ab o ve whic h was tak en at f/22. Compare it with the photo to s righ t. This extended depth of field is esp ecially go o d for suc h sub jects as landscap es.
13 EXPOSURE MODES 13 Exp osure Mo des The New Canon F-1 is basically a man ual-exp osure camera capable of through-the- iens, full-ap erture metering and stopp ed-do wn metering with the Ey e-Lev el Finder FN.
