About the LCD Monitor The LCD monitor is produced with extremely high-precision man ufacturing techniques.

5 Please Read T est Shots Before y ou shoot images of subjects of impor tance to you, w e strongly recommend that you shoot se veral trial images to confirm that you are operating the camera correctly .
6 Safety Precautions ¡ Before using the camer a, please ensure that you hav e read and understood the saf ety precautions descr ibed belo w . Alwa ys ensure that the camera is operated correctly .
7 ¡ T o avoid the risk of high-v oltage electr ical shoc k, do not touch the flash por tion of the camer a if it has been damaged. Similarly , nev er touch inter nal portions of the equipment that become exposed as a result of damage . There is a risk of high-voltage electrical shock.
8 ¡ Remov e the power cord on a regular periodic basis and wipe aw ay the dust and dir t that collects on the plug, the e xterior of the electrical outlet and the surrounding area.
9 ¡ Do not shor t-circuit the batter y terminals with metallic objects, such as ke y holders. It could lead to overheating, b ur ns and other injuries. ¡ Before y ou discard a batter y , cover the terminals with tape or other insulators to pre vent direct contact with other objects.
10 CA UTIONS ¡ A void using, placing or storing the equipment in places subject to strong sunlight or high temperatures , such as the dashboard or trunk (boot) of a car . Exposure to intense sunlight and heat ma y cause the batteries to leak, ov erheat or explode , resulting in fire, burns or other injuries.
11 Preventing Malfunctions A void Str ong Magnetic Fields Nev er place the camera in close proximity to electric motors or other equipment generating strong electromagnetic fields. Exposure to strong magnetic fields may cause malfunctions or corrupt image data.

16 Indicators The upper indicator comes on when y ou tur n on the pow er and whenever y ou press the shutter button. Upper Indicator Green: Ready to shoot, or ready to communicate with y our computer . 18 Installing the Battery P ack The camera uses f our AA-size alkaline batteries supplied with the camera. Y ou ma y use optional nick el metal h ydr ide (NiMH) batteries. 1 Be sure that the camera power is off. 2 Slide the battery cover loc k, and push the battery cover slightly f orward.

20 ¡ Never mix unused and partially used batteries. Alwa ys load four fresh (or full y recharged) batteries at the same time. ¡ Never mix batteries of different types or fr om different manufacturers. All four batteries should be identical. ¡ Before inserting the batteries, wipe the batter y terminals well with a dry cloth.

24 About CF Cards... ¡ CF cards are high-precision electronic de vices. Do not bend them, apply f orce to them, or subject them to shocks or vibration. ¡ Do not attempt to disassemble or alter a CF card. ¡ Moving a CF card rapidly betw een temperature extremes will cause condensation to f or m in the card and lead to a malfunction.

32 Using the LCD Monitor The LCD monitor can be used to compose images while shooting, adjust settings menus and repla y images. ¡ The image in the LCD monitor may dark en when the monitor is used under sunlight or other strong lighting. This is not a defect.

50 Changing the Resolution and Compression Y ou can change the resolution and compression (e xclud- ing movies) settings to suit the purpose of the image you are about to shoot. The resolution gets higher in the order S (Small), M (Medium), and L (Large).

62 Stitch Assist Mode Use this mode when taking shots that you w ant to combine into a panorama. T o create the panorama itself , you m ust stitch the images together at your computer . ¡ T o create the panorama at your computer , use the PhotoStitch software that came with y our camera.
63 Shooting ¡ Compose each frame so that it ov erlaps 30 to 50 % of the adjoining image. T r y to keep the vertical misalign- ment to within 10 % of the image height. ¡ Do not include moving items in the o verlap. ¡ Do not try to stitch images that include both distant and close items.
64 3 Compose the next shot, taking care to overlap the pre vious image . ¡ Minor discrepancies in the ov er lapping por tions can be corrected when the images are stitched together . ¡ If you are not satisfied with the pre vious shot, you can use or button to return to that shot and reshoot it.

67 Shooting Program AE Use the program AE mode to ha ve the camera automati- cally set the shutter speed and aper ture settings to match the brightness of the scene. Some settings such as e xposure compensation and white balance can be set manually . 1 Shoot the image.
68 Differences and Similarities between the and Modes. ¡ Both modes automatically select the shutter speed and aper ture settings. ¡ The follo wing settings can be adjusted in mode, but not in mode.
69 Shooting Manuall y Setting the Shutter Speed and Aper ture Y ou can manually set the shutter speed and aper ture to achie ve a particular effect. This is convenient f or shooting firew or ks and other images where it is difficult to set the correct e xposure automatically .
70 ¡ For inf or mation about noise reduction, see “ Program AE ” (p . 67). Shutter Speed Display The numbers in the tab le below indicate the shutter speed in seconds. For slo wer speeds, quote marks indicate the decimal place, so that 0"3 indicates 0.
71 Shooting Using the Focus Loc k The follo wing types of subject may not be suited to autofocus photog raphy . Use the f ocus lock in these situations.
72 Focus Lock Method 2 1 Press the DISPLA Y button to turn on the LCD monitor . 2 Aim the camera so that a subject at the same distance as the main subject is centered in the selected AF frame . 3 Press and hold the shutter b utton halfway to lock f ocus, and wait until the camera beeps twice.
73 Shooting Switching Between A utof ocus Modes Y ou can change the auto focus frame (AF fr ame) selection method. The AF frame will appear when the LCD monitor is turned on (p. 38). On The camera automatically selects the AF frame to f ocus according to the shooting conditions.
74 Switching Between Light Metering Modes Y ou can switch between metering modes to shoot. Appropriate for standard shooting conditions, including bac klit scenes.
75 Shooting Adjusting the Exposure If you are shooting against a bright bac kground or strong backlight, y ou may need to correct the e xposure so that the subject doesn ’ t come out too dark. 1 Press the / button once. 2 Adjust the compensation. ¡ Y ou can set the adjustment from – 2 to +2, in 1/3-step increments.
76 Setting the White Balance When the white balance mode is set to match the light source, the camer a can reproduce colors more accurately . Set the white balance mode to a natural or artificial light setting according to the circumstances. The camera sets the white balance automatically according to shooting conditions.
77 Shooting 2 Select the white balance. ¡ If the LCD monitor is on, you can chec k the results by vie wing the image on the LCD monitor . ¡ A shot can be taken immediately b y pressing the shutter button. The men u will reappear after the shot, allowing you to adjust the setting.
78 Switching Between Photo Eff ect Modes Eff ect Records with no photo effect. Off Vivid Emphasizes the contrast and color satur ation to record in bold color . Neutral T ones down the contrast and color satur ation to record neutral hues. Low Records subjects with softened outlines.
79 Shooting Changing the ISO Speed Change the ISO speed when shooting in dark places or when you w ant to shoot with a faster shutter speed. 1 In the [Rec.] menu, select (ISO Speed). ¡ F or information on using the menu, see “ Selecting Menus and Settings ” (p.
80 Resetting the File Number Y ou can use this feature to select whether the camer a resets the file number each time y ou inser t a new CF card. The camera resets the file number to 100-0001 each time you insert a new (unused) CF card. If you inser t a card that already contains some images, numbering resumes from the ne xt available n umber.
81 Shooting ¡ The [Off ] setting helps ensure that file numbers remain unique ov er multiple CF cards. This is useful if you are planning to download images from the cards to y our computer , since it helps av oid accidental overwrites that may occur if filenames are duplicated.
