Safety Precautions 10 Other Warnings • Avoid dropping or subjecting the battery to severe impacts. The above may cause explosions or leaks, result ing in fire, injury and damage to t he surroundings.
Safety Precautions 11 Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.). Doing so may cause malfunctions or damage the image sensor. • When using the camera on a beac h or at a windy location, be careful not to allow dust or sand to enter the camera.

13 1 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view and erase the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and how to transfer images to a computer.
14 Use the incl uded char ger to charg e the battery . Be sure to charge the ba ttery as it is not c harged at the ti me of purchas e. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ∆ Align the o marks on the batte ry and charger, t hen inse rt the bat tery by sliding i t in and down .
Charging the Battery 15 Approximate Number of Sho ts That Can Be Taken • The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, the number of shots that can be take n may be less than mentioned above.

Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 17 Open the cover. ∆ Slide the cov er and open it . Insert the battery. ∆ Insert the battery as shown unt il it locks into place with a click. ∆ Be sure to insert the battery in the correct direction or it will not properly loc k into place.
Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 18 Removing the Bat tery and Memory Ca rd Remove t he battery . ∆ Open the cove r and press the battery lock in the direc tion of the ar row. The battery will pop up. Remove the memory card. ∆ Push the memory card i n until you hear a click, then slowly re lease it.
19 The Date/Time se ttings screen will appear th e first time th e camera is turn ed on. Since th e dates and time s recorded int o your image s are based on the se settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ∆ Press the ON/OF F button. The Date/Time screen will ap pear.
Setting the Date and Time 20 Changing the Date and Time You can change the curren t date and time settings. Display the menu. ∆ Press the n but ton. Choose [Date/Time] in th e 3 tab. ∆ Press the qr buttons to choo se the 3 tab. ∆ Press the op bu ttons or turn the – dial to choose [Dat e/Time], t hen press the m button.

22 Before you us e a new memory car d or one that ha s been format ted in other devices, y ou should f ormat the ca rd with this c amera. Formattin g (initial izing) a memory card erases all data on th e memory card. As you canno t retrieve the erased da ta, exerc ise adequate caution be fore formatting the memory card.
23 To take imag es that are in focus, be sure to first press the shutter button lightly (hal fway) to focu s, then pre ss fully to shoot. Press halfway (lightly to focus). ∆ Press light ly until the ca mera beeps twi ce and AF frames app ear where th e camera focused.
24 Since the ca mera can dete rmine the subj ect and shoot ing conditi ons, you can let it automa tically sele ct the best settings for t he scene a nd just shoot . The camera can a lso detect and focus on faces, se tting the colo r and bright ness to optimal le vels.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 25 When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and AF fra mes will appear wh ere the camera focuse d. Several AF fr ames will appea r when the camera focuse s on more than one point. Shoot. ∆ Press the s hutter butto n fully to sho ot.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 26 • What if white and gray frames appear when you point the came ra toward a subject? When faces are detected, a white frame appears on th e face of the main subject, while gray frames appear on o ther detected faces. The frames will follow the subjects withi n a certain range.
27 You can view th e images you ha ve taken on the screen. Enter Playback mode. ∆ Press the 1 butt on. The last image y ou took will ap pear. Choose an image. ∆ Pressing q or turning the – dial countercloc kwise will cycle throug h the images in the r everse order they were taken, from t he newest image to the oldes t.
28 You can ch oose and er ase images o ne at a time . Please no te that eras ed images canno t be recover ed. Exercis e adequate caut ion before e rasing an image. Enter Playback mode. ∆ Press the 1 butt on. The last image y ou took will ap pear.
29 The camera can aut omaticall y select all se ttings so that you can shoot movi es just by pres sing the shutte r button. The audio wi ll record in stereo. If you continue shooting for a long time, the camera may be come warm. This is not a malf unction.
Shooting Movies 30 Recording wi ll start, and [ Rec] and the elapsed time will appear on the screen . ∆ Once shooti ng begins, take your f inger off the shutter butt on. ∆ If you chan ge the compo sition of your shot during shoot ing, the fo cus, brightnes s and tone will automatica lly adjust.

Viewing Movies 32 • Install the included software ( p. 34) . • When watching a movie on a computer , frames may drop, it may no t play smoothly, and the audio may stop suddenly depending on the computer’ s capabilities.
33 You can use the incl uded software to transfer i mages you have sh ot with the camera to a computer for vi ewing. If you are al ready using ZoomBr owser EX/ImageBr owser, i nstall the so ftware from the inclu ded CD-ROM, overwri ting your current instal lation.

Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 66 Digital Tele -Converter The foca l length of the len s can be inc reased by an equiva lent of 1.4 x or 2.3x. This enables a fast er shutter spee d and less chance of ca mera shake than the zoom (inc luding digi tal zoom) u sed by itself at the same zoom fa ctor.

Press the n button for more than one second. The unchanged ima ge and the Color Swap image will bo th display.
Changing the Color and Shooting 97 Specify the range of colors to be swapped. ∆ Press the op bu ttons or turn the – dial to adjust th e range of co lors affect ed. ∆ Choose a negat ive valu e to limit t he range of colors . Choose a posit ive value to extend the range of colors to similar c olors.
98 Large subj ects can b e split into several shots that can l ater be merg ed together u sing the incl uded softwar e on a compute r to create a pan oramic image. Choose x or v . ∆ Follow Steps 1 – 2 on p. 54 to choose x or v . Take the first shot.
