61179641AL1-5 C 1-1 Section 1 Intr oduction GENER AL The Total Access 1248 (see Figure 1-1 ) is a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) system that is used to further extend Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) services in the network.

Inverse Multip lexing over ATM (IMA) is a tec hnology used to bond multiple (DS1) links into a single data pipe.

Upon initial powering, the Total Access 1248 system perfor ms a power up self-test. Once the power up self-test is complete, the status LEDs reflect the condition of the hardware.

61179641AL1-5 C 2-1 Section 2 A pplica tion Guidelines INTRODUCTION The Total Access 1248 provides 48 ADSL2+ plus POTS ports downstream to the subscriber, one to four T1 IMA ports upstre am to the network, local and re mote management capabilities, and front panel LEDs that indicate status.

Installation Prerequisites 61179641AL1-5 C 3-3 INSTALLA TION PR EREQUISITES The following items should be completed pr ior to installing the Total Access 1248: 1. Make sure that the network feed is in place. 2. Make sure that local power is available and that the required fuses are insta lled.

Installation Steps 61179641AL1-5 C 3-5 Mounting the T otal Access 1248 The Total Access 1248 is shipped with two sets of mounting brackets that accommodate either a 19-inch or 23-inch rack. • The mounting brackets u sed for a 19-inch rack are part number 32 65540.

The Total Access 1248 must be grounded to a reliable grounding source.

The fan module is located o n the right side of t he unit, and contains fo ur fans (see Figure 3-6 ).
