5 Chapter 1 Installa tion Installation If using OS X 10.4 or later , download and install “Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2” from www .microsoft. com. F or OS X 10.3.9, use version 1.0.3 instead. 1 Connect the supplied USB device to your c omputer .
6 5 Click Finish . NAS Navigator2 will open . Y ou can also open it by clicking icon on the Windows desktop or icon in the Dock on Mac OS. 6 In NAS Navigator2, right-click on your T eraStation ’ s icon, then select Proper ties . On the Mac, click the T eraStation ’ s icon while holding down the contr ol key , then selec t Configure .
7 Notes: • If the message “ The publisher of this remote connection cannot be identified. Do you want t o connect anyway?” is displayed , click Connect . • If “ The identity of the remote computer cannot be verified. Do y ou want to connect anyway?” is displa yed, click Y es or Continue .

10 Installing Antivirus Software Installing antivirus soft ware on the T eraStation is strongly recommended . Connect a USB CD/DVD drive to the T eraStation ’ s USB por t, load the antivirus software CD into the CD/DVD drive , and install the software.
11 Chapter 2 Opening W indow s Stor age Ser v er Opening W indow s Storage Ser v er If using OS X 10.4 or later , download and install “Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2” from www .microsoft. com. If using OS X 10.3.9, use version 1.0.3 instead.
12 The default username and password ar e “ Administrator” and “passw ord” . Note: Make sure that the same language is configur ed in “Display language ” , “ Welcome scr een and system accounts ” , and system locale. C onfiguring differen t languages for these settings may cause unexpected behavior .
13 Chapter 3 W indow s Up dat e W indows Upda te F or best results, Windows S torage Ser ver should be updat ed regularly . Use W indows Updat e as described below . Note: The T eraStation must be connected to the Internet. 1 In Windows S torage Ser ver , click Control Panel - S ystem and Security - Windows Update .
14 Chapter 4 Sof tware RAID Builder RAID Builder is used to modify the RAID arrays. See chapter 5 f or details. Note: T o launch RAID Builder , you must be logged in as the Administrator in Windows St orage Ser ver .
15 Chapter 5 Managing Y our St orage Crea ting V olumes V olume T ypes The featur es of each volume type are explained below . Notes: • RAID Builder will be used to create a v olume, not the Disk Management options in Windows Stor age Ser ver .
16 Spanned V olumes The unallocated ar eas of multiple hard drives are joined t o create a single logical v olume. This allows various drive spaces to be combined efficiently .
17 F ormatting V olumes 1 In Windows S torage Ser ver , open Administrative T ools , then double - click Computer Management . 2 Click Disk Management .
18 Crea ting a RAID 5 V olume 1 In Windows S torage Ser ver , click Launch RAID Builder . 2 Select “Create RAID array” from the drop-down menu and “RAID 5” under “RAID structure” . 3 Select at least three drives to creat e a RAID 5 array .
19 • F or “n (1 to 4)” identical hard drives in a RAID 5 array , the available space is (n-1)/n times the total drive space . A RAID 5 volume will be created . Next, create a shar ed folder on the volume as described in chapter 6. Crea ting a Mirrored V olume (R AID 1) 1 In Windows S torage Ser ver , click Launch RAID Builder .
20 Example: F or a configuration with drive 1 (50 GB), driv e 2 (80 GB), drive 3 (58 GB), and drive 4 (100 GB), the usable space on the mirrored v olume will be 50 GB x 4 drives = 200 GB. A striped volume will be creat ed. Next, create a shar ed folder on the volume as described in chapter 6.
21 Example: F or a configuration with drive 1 (50 GB), driv e 2 (80 GB), drive 3 (58 GB), and drive 4 (100 GB), the usable space on the RAID volume will be 50 GB + 80 GB + 58 GB + 100 GB = 288 GB. A spanned volume will be creat ed. Next, create a shar ed folder on the volume as described in chapter 6.
22 3 Right-click the unallocated area, then select New Simple Volume . 4 Click Next . 5 Enter the volume siz e that you want to cr eate, then click Next .
23 6 Select Assign the following drive letter , then click Next . 7 Select Format this volume with the follo wing settings and Perform a quick format , then click Next .
24 A simple volume will be creat ed. Next, create a shar ed folder on the volume as described in chapter 6. Hard Driv e Replacemen t Proc edure Hard drives in the T eraStation show a green status LED during normal operation. When a drive fails, its error LED will glow red .
25 1. Error LED Glows red if a driv e has failed. 2. Status LEDs Green: Normal operation. Flashing red: If you need to remov e a drive whose status LED is flashing red , either shut down the T eraStation, or dismount the drive in RAID Builder . Once the T eraStation is shut down, or the drive is dismounted , then it is safe to r eplace the drive.
26 F ollow the procedur e below . Hard Drive Replac ement in Case of Disk F ailure Other Than Drive 1 or Driv e 2 1 Double -click the icon on the desktop to start NAS Navigator2. F or Mac OS, click the icon in the Dock . 2 Right-click on your T eraStation ’ s icon, then click Open Remote D esktop .
27 5 Select Dismount drive , selec t the hard drive to be r emoved , and click OK . 6 When the message “ The drive is ready to r emove . ” is displayed, click OK . The status LED will stop flashing and glow st eadily . 7 WS5600D , WS5400D, WS5200D: Open the front cover with the included key .
28 9 Pull out the hard driv e car tridge and remov e it from the T eraStation..
29 10 Inser t the new hard drive (sold separ ately) into the empty slot. Slide the drive in with the locking mechanism open..
30 11 Swing the lock back down un til it clicks into place..

If the hard drive was replac ed while the T eraStation power was turned off , press the power button on the T eraStation to turn on the power and start RAID Builder by per forming steps 1 to 4 on the fr ont page. 13 Select Detect drives , selec t the new drive, and click OK .
32 14 When “Drive detected” is display ed, click OK . 15 In Window s Storage Server , open Administrative T ools , then double - click Computer Management .
33 18 Right-click the initialized hard drive, then select Conv er t to Dynamic Disk . A RAID array cannot be built unless the hard drive is c onverted to a dynamic disk. 19 Select the step depending on your purpose for a crea ted volume. T o create a new v olume: (a) Right-click the new dynamic disk and selec t New V olume .
34 T o restore a Mirrored v olume (R AID resynchronization): (a) Right-click the volume labeled “F ailed Redundancy ” and click Remove Mirror . (b) When “Remove Mirror ” is displayed, select the drive with its status missing and click OK . Note: P er form steps (a) and (b) f or each volume that requir es RAID resynchronization.
35 13 When “When Drive X will be initialized. Continue?” is displayed, click OK . It will take about an hour for the mirrored volume t o be repaired . Y ou can check the progress of the r epair in “Disk Management” . 14 Select the step depending on your purpose for a crea ted volume.
36 Chapter 6 Settings Date and T ime 1 Click the time in the system tray of Window s Storage Server . 2 Click Change date and time settings - Change date and time , select the current date and time , and click OK . Note: In the Internet Time tab , click Change settings , then select Synchronize with an Internet time server .
