1-12 Remarks It is recommended that you t est paper , especially special sizes and ty pes of paper and heavy paper, on this pri nter before purc hasing large quantities. Avoid using coa ted paper, suc h as vinyl coated paper. Avoid using preprinted or hig hl y te xt ured paper.
CHAPTER 1 ABOUT THIS PRINTER 1-13 Special Paper Before using paper wi th holes, such as organi zer sheets, you must fan the stack well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds. Do not use organize r sheets that are stuck together . The glue that is used might cause damage to the printer.

1-16 3. Load paper i nto the paper cassette. M ake sure that the paper is flat in the cassette at all four corners. Fig. 1-10 Load the paper Note Do not load mor e than 250 sheets o f paper (80 g/m 2 ) in the cassette, or paper jams may occur.

1-22 To print on thicker paper and card The printer has a s traight paper path from the man ual feed sl ot to the rear of t he printer when th e rear cover is lifted upwards. Use this p aper feed and output method when you wan t to print on th ick er paper or card.

1-24 How to print on both sides of the paper (Manual Duplexing) The supplied prin ter drivers for Wind ows 95/9 8, Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 4.0 all enable manual du plex printing . For m ore informatio n about how to make the settings, see the Help text in th e printer driver.

CHAPTER 1 ABOUT THIS PRINTER 1-27 What do the LED indications mean This section refers to the fol l owin g LED an d bu tton o n the printer control panel . The LED indications as shown i n the table below are used in the i llustrations in this chapter.
1-28 Ready (Paper) LED indications The Ready LED indicates the current status of the printer. LED Printer status Off ❍ The power switch is off or the pr inter is in sleep mode . If the printer is in sleep m ode, it will wake u p automatic ally when it receives data or when you press the con trol panel button.
CHAPTER 1 ABOUT THIS PRINTER 1-29 Data (Toner) LED indications The Data LED indicates the cu rrent sta t us of the prin t da ta p r o cess. LED Printer status Off ❍ The printer has n o print data. Blinking The printer is rece iving data from t he computer or the printer is processing data in memory.
1-30 This LED also work s as the Toner LED with the Alarm LED. They blink simultaneously to indica te a to ner error . See “How to replace the Toner cartridge ” in Chapter 3 . LED Error Action Ready Alarm Paper Toner Data Drum Blinking every 5 seconds Toner low Indicates that the toner ca rtridge is nearly empty.

1-32 Control Panel Button Operations The control p anel button is u sed for the fo ll owing purposes depending on the situation. Cancel Printing If you press the button duri ng printing , the printer immediately st ops printing and ejects the paper. Wake-Up If the pri nter is in sleep mod e, pressing the b utton wakes it up into the ready state.
CHAPTER 1 ABOUT THIS PRINTER 1-33 Other Control Features The printer has th e following useful features: Sleep Mode When the pr in ter does not receive da ta for a c ertain period of time ( timeout), it enters sleep mode . Sleep mode act s a s though the prin ter was turned off.
1-34 Test Print Mode The printer h as the following test print mo des. Foll ow these steps: 1. Make sure that the f ront cover is closed. 2. Hold down the co ntr ol pa nel button and turn on th e power swi tch. Ke e p the button depressed u ntil the Drum LED comes on.
CHAPTER 2 OPTIONS 2-1 CHAPTE R 2 OPTIONS Optional Accessories and Supplies This printer h as the following o ptional accessories a nd supplies, and you can increase the capabi lit i e s of the printer with these items.
2-2 The Lower Tray unit (For HL-1250 Only ) The lower tray unit is an op t iona l dev ice that functions as a third paper source. It can contain a maximum of 250 shee ts of paper (80 g/m 2 ). To obtain the optional lower tray unit , please consult the dealer or store where you purchased the prin ter.
CHAPTER 2 OPTIONS 2-3 How to use the SERIAL INTERFACE (RS-100M) Connection (For HL-1250 Only) To connect the print er to a DOS computer with a serial interface or to an Ap ple Macintosh co mputer with a serial interface , yo u need to install the optional serial interface board (RS-100M).
2-4 How to select the RS-422A (Apple) or RS-232C (IBM) Serial Interface (For HL-1250 Only) ✒ Note This section is only for printer models w hich ha ve had the serial interf ace installed.

2-8 How to connect the Serial Interface Cable ✒ Note This section is only for printer models w hich ha ve had the serial interf ace installed. You need a serial interface cable with an 8-pin, DIN-ty pe connector to connect your printer and computer.
CHAPTER 2 OPTIONS 2-9 1 . Make sure that the power switch is turned off . ! Caution Be sure to turn off the power switch b efore connecting or d isconnecting the interface cables, o r the printer may be damaged.
2-10 What is the Brother print server (NC-2010p) An optional Net w ork print server Brother NC-2010p is available , which allows your printer to be conn ec ted to your networ k via the parallel interface. Brother print servers allo w multiple host computers to shar e a Brot her printer on a 10 Mbit Etherne t network.
CHAPT ER 2 O PT IONS 2-11 How to add extra Memor y (For HL-1250 Onl y ) The HL-1030 /1240 printer has 2 Mbyte of standard memory and is not ab le to be upgraded with additional memor y . The HL-1250 print er has 4 Mby te of s tandard mem ory and a s lot for opt ional additional memory.
2-12 ✒ Note The HL-1250 can also support a r esolution of true 600 dpi and 1200 x 600 dpi under Windows 95/98 , Windows 3.1 and W indows NT 4. 0 with the supplied printer driver. We recommend y ou ex pan d the printer me mo ry to av oi d a ny memory full errors.
CHAPTER 2 OPTIONS 2-13 ! Caution Be sure to turn off th e power switch and unplug the AC co rd to the printer before installing or removing the SIMM to/fr o m the main controller PCB. 2 . Open the rear cover. Unscrew the screws secur ing the access cover and remove it.
2-14 4 . Install the SIMM into the slot a t an angle and then push it gently to wards the vertical until it clicks into place. Fig. 2-7 Install the SIMM 5 . Install the access cover. 6 . Secure the access co ver with the two screws.
CHAPTER 3 MAINTENANCE 3-1 CHAPTER 3 MAINTENANCE The following are mainte nance messages and a pp ear on the LEDs. These messages prompt you to r epl ace each of the cons umables before they r un out.

CHAPTER 3 MAINTENANCE 3-3 How to replace the Toner Cartridge The printer, wh en the standard c apa city toner cartridge is used, ca n pr int approximately 3 , 0 00 pages at 5% coverag e on A4/Letter size paper with one toner cartridge.
3-4 ✒ Note Both Alarm and Data (Toner) LEDs will blink continuousl y to indicate that the toner is nearly empty. Th is blinking d oes not stop until you have installed a new toner cartridge.
CHAPTER 3 MAINTENANCE 3-5 2 . Place the dru m unit assembly conta ining the old toner cartridge on a flat, horizontal surface, and pull the tone r cartridge out of the drum unit assembly while pushing the lock lever dow n wit h yo ur right hand.
3-6 4 . Remove the pr otective cover. Fig.3-6 Remove the protective cover ! Caution • Only un pack the toner cartr idge immediately before you need to install it into the printer. If to ner cartr idges are le ft unpacked for a long period of time, the toner life is shortened.
CHAPTER 3 MAINTENANCE 3-7 5 . Install the new toner cartr idge into the drum u nit until it locks into place, indicated by a click. Wh en the toner cartridge is i n stalled corr ectly, the lock lever is lifted automatically.
3-8 6 . Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently slidi ng the blu e tab to the right end and left end several times.
CHAPTER 3 MAINTENANCE 3-9 How to replace the Dru m Unit The printer uses a drum unit to create the print images on paper. If the Dru m LED is on, it indicates the drum unit is nearly at the end of its life. We recommend you obtain a new drum unit to replace the current one.
3-10 Follow these ste ps to replace the drum unit. You can al so view the drum unit replacement method in the instruct ional video on the supplied CD-ROM : 1 . Open the front cov er of the printer and pull ou t the drum unit assembly. Fig.

Place the drum unit a ss embly on a flat, horizontal surface, and pull the toner cartridge out of the drum unit assembly while pus hing the lock lever down with your righ t hand. 3-12 4 . Install the toner cartridg e i nto the new drum u nit until it locks into place, indicated by a click. When the to ner cartridge is installe d correctly, the lock lever is lifted automatically.

3-14 How to clean the printer Clean the printer exteri or a nd interior periodically. If printe d pages get stained with toner, clean the printer inter i or and drum u nit. Cleaning the printer exterior ✒ Note Clean the printer exterior u sing the inf ormation in th e following instr uctions.

CHAPTER 4 TROUBLESHOOTING 4-1 CHAPTER 4 TROUBLESHOOTING Identifying your problem First, check the following: • The power pl ug is connected c orrectly and the prin ter is turned on. • All of the pr o tective parts have b een removed. • The toner cartridg e and drum unit are installed correctly.
4-2 Control Panel Indications Operator calls and how to clear them The LED indications as shown i n the table below are used in the i llustrations in this chapter. ❍ LED is Off LED is Blinking LED is On If a recoverable error occ urs, the printer indicates an ‘operat or call’ by th e LED indications as s hown in the table below.

4-4 Service call indications If an unrecoverable error occurs, the printer will indicate the ne e d for a service call by illum i nating all the LEDs and then the fo llowing com bination of LEDs alternately: For example, the foll owing are the indications wh en a Fuser malfunction error occurs.
CHAPTER 4 TROUBLESHOOTING 4-5 If you see any of these service call indication s, turn off the power switch, wait a few second s, then turn i t on and try to prin t again. If you cannot clear the error and see the s ame service call indication after turn ing on the printer, cons ult your dealer or our a ut horized service representative.
4-6 Error messages in the Status Monitor The Status Monitor will report problems wit h the printer as define d in th e following table. Take the corre c ti ve actions for the err o r mess age the Status Monitor reports. Error message Action COVER OPEN • Close the fr ont cover of th e printer.

4-8 Error message printouts The printer will repor t problems by printi ng an error messag e as defined in the following table. Take t he corrective actions for the error mess age the Printout reports. Error message Action MEMORY FULL • Press the pa nel button t o print the data remaining in the printer.

4-10 Paper Handling First, ensure that you ar e using paper that meets Brother recommended paper specifications. See “What kind of paper can I us e” in Chapter 1. Problem Reco mmendation The printer does not load paper. • If there is paper i n the paper cassette, ma ke sure it is straight.

4-18 Improving the print quality ! Caution If th e Drum LED is on you can clear a prin t qualit y probl em by replacing the drum unit with a new one. Th e Drum LED indicates that the dr um unit is at the end of life.
