5 English This unit incor porates a sophisticated, m ulti-program digital sound field processor . The processor allows y ou to electronically e xpand and change the shape of the audio sound field from both audio and video sources, creating a theater-lik e e xper ience in y our listening room.
6 Dolb y Pro Logic Surr ound This unit emplo ys a Dolby Pro Logic Surround decoder similar to prof essional Dolby Stereo decoders used in man y movie theaters. By using the Dolby Pro Logic Surround decoder , you can e xper ience the dr amatic realism and impact of Dolby Surround movie theater sound in y our own home .
7 English Laser Disc is a home audio f or mat that could benefit from Dolby Digital (A C-3). In the near future, Dolb y Digital (A C-3) will also be applied to DBS, CA TV , D VD and HDTV . The ongoing release of Dolby Stereo Digital theatrical films now underw a y will provide an immediate source of Dolb y Digital (A C-3) encoded video software .
8 Dolby Pr o Logic + 2 Digital Sound Fields Digital sound fields are created on the presence side and the rear surround side of the Dolby Pro Logic Surround-decoded sound field respectiv ely .

10 Setting Up Y our Speaker System This unit has been designed to provide the best sound field quality with a full se ven-speak er system setup , using two e xtra pairs of eff ect speakers to generate the sound field plus one center speaker f or dialog.
11 English 4 Speaker System Simplest system. You can enjoy widely diffused sound by only adding two additional speaker units at the rear. FRONT MIX switch—Set to ON. (See page 22.) CENTER SPEAKER—Set to PHNTM. (See page 35.) 5 Speaker System Good for Audio/Video sources.

15 English C T ONE BYP ASS s witch When this s witch is pressed inward (ON), the input signal does not pass through the tone (BASS and TREBLE) control circuitr y so that it is unaff ected by the tone control circuitr y . Use this s witch to obtain pure sound and to check the tone control setting.
16 1 Preset Station Number Displa y Shows the selected preset station n umber (1 to 8) and its group (A to E). 2 ROOM 2 Indicator Lights up when you s witch the input source for the second room by using the Room 2 remote control unit in the main room.

19 English 1 Antenna Connection T er minals Connect the included indoor FM antenna to the FM ANT ter minal and connect the included AM loop antenna to the AM ANT and GND ter minals . T o heighten saf ety and reduce interf erence, connect the GND terminal to a good ear th ground.
20 C ROOM 2 OUT J acks These jacks output audio and video signals to the equipment in the second room. The input source selection is made using the Room 2 remote control unit.

30 CONNECTING SPEAKER SYSTEMS Connect the SPEAKERS ter minals to y our speakers with wire of the proper gauge, cut as shor t as possib le. If the connections are f aulty , no sound will be heard from the speakers . Make sure that the polarity of the speaker wires is correct, that is, + and – markings are obser ved.
31 English CONNECTING THE MAIN SPEAKERS T O THIS UNIT One or two sets of MAIN speak ers can be connected to this unit. If you use tw o sets of MAIN speakers , connect one set to the MAIN SPEAKERS A ter minals , and connect another set to the B ter minals .
32 CONNECTING THE FRONT EFFECT SPEAKERS, REAR SPEAKERS AND THE CENTER SPEAKER(S) T O THIS UNIT Connect the FRONT eff ect speakers to the FRONT EFFECT SPEAKERS ter minals of this unit. If the FRONT eff ect speakers are not used, the FRONT MIX s witch should be set to “ON”.
33 English ADDING A SUBW OOFER Y ou may wish to add a subw oofer to reinf orce the bass frequencies. This unit provides line-le v el subwoof er outputs. If you use one subwoof er , connect either of the SUBW OOFER jacks to the INPUT jack of the subw oofer amplifier , and connect the speaker terminals of the subwoof er amplifier to the subwoof er .
34 Switching the IMPED ANCE SELECT OR switch on the rear panel Select the position whose requirements your speak er system meets. Be sure to switch this only when the po wer of this unit is tur ned off . (Upper position) Center: If you use one center speak er , the impedance of the speaker m ust be 4 Ω or higher .

41 English This operation uses an internal test-tone generator f or balancing the le v els of the main, center , rear and front eff ect speak ers. The adjustment of each speaker output le vel should be done at your listening position with the remote control unit.
42 NO TE : If there is insufficient v olume from the eff ect speak ers, y ou ma y decrease the main speak er v olume le v el by setting the MAIN LEVEL s witch on the rear panel to “–10 dB”, and adjust each speak er le v el again. CENTER DELA Y (Adjusting the delay of center sounds (dialog etc.)) Control range: 0 ms to 5 ms (in 1 ms step) Preset value: 0 ms * This adjustment is eff ective only when the Dolb y Digital (AC-3) is decoded and the signals of selected source encoded with the Dolby Digital (A C-3) contain center-channel signals.

LFE LEVEL (Adjusting the output level at the LFE (low frequenc y effect) channel) Control range: –20 dB to 0 dB (in 1 dB step) Preset value: 0 dB * This adjustment is effectiv e only when the Dolby Digital (A C-3) is decoded and the signals of selected source encoded with the Dolby Digital (A C-3) contain LFE signals.

Notes on input mode selection • T o play bac k a source with the Dolb y Digital (A C-3) decoded, set the input mode to “A UT O”. • When y ou want to enjo y a source which has nor mal 2-channel signals with a Dolby Pro Logic Surround prog ram, select the ANALOG mode.
49 English Regardless of the setting of input selector b uttons , when y ou set the REC OUT selector to a position other than “SOURCE”, the source selected b y the REC OUT selector can be recorded b y other tape deck (MD recorder) and/or VCRs connected to this unit.
50 A UT OMA TIC TUNING 1. Select “TUNER” as the input source. 2. Select the reception band (FM or AM) confir ming it on the displa y panel. 3. If “A UT O TUNING” is not illuminated on the display panel, press once so that it lights up . 4. Begin the automatic tuning search.

By this function, this unit performs automatic tuning and stores FM stations with strong signals sequentially . Up to 40 stations are stored automatically in the same wa y as in the manual preset tuning method on page 51.

60 Adjusting dela y time Y ou can adjust the time difference betw een the beginning of the sound from the main speakers and the beginning of the eff ect sound from the rear or front eff ect speakers . The larger the v alue, the later the eff ect sound is generated.
61 English If you use the SLEEP timer of this unit, you can mak e this unit tur n off automatically . When you are going to sleep while enjo ying a broadcast or other desired input source, this timer function is helpful. NO TES • The SLEEP timer can be controlled only with the remote control unit.

67 English When the lid of the remote control unit is closed, you can easily operate Y amaha components including lear ned functions by using the OPERA TION CONTROL k eys. When the lid is closed, the OPERA TION CONTROL ke ys substitute f or the ke ys of group numbered 1 , 2 or 3 and the (+10) ke y on the left illustration.

73 English 1 Place this remote control unit and the other remote control unit so that they f ace each other . 2 Press the LEARN button using the point of a mechanical pencil etc. * If there is no operation f or about 30 seconds after the LEARN button is pressed, the TRANSMIT/LEARN indicator flashes rapidly and the current mode is canceled.

77 English T o Clear All Learned Functions 1 Select the kind of ke y functions all of which you w ant to clear by using the MA CRO s witch on the side panel of the remote control unit. OFF : Select this position if you w ant to clear all of the lear ned functions e xcept macros.
78 PROBLEM Power does not come on. The unit turns off suddenly soon after the power is turned on. Hum. No sound. No sound from the effect speakers. No sound from the front effect speakers. No sound from the center speaker. Poor bass reproduction. The sound suddenly goes off.
79 English PROBLEM The remote control unit does not work. The remote control unit does not function properly. Learning cannot be made successfully. (The TRANSMIT/LEARN indicator does not light up or flash.) Continuous functions such as volume are learned, but operate only for a moment before stopping.
80 PROBLEM FM stereo reception is noisy. There is distortion and clear reception cannot be obtained even with a good FM antenna. A desired FM station cannot be tuned in with the automatic tuning method. Previously preset stations can no longer be tuned in.
