CONNECTIONS 15 En PREP ARA TION PREP ARA TION The speaker layout belo w sho ws the speaker setting we recommend. Y ou can use it to e njoy CINEMA DSP and multi-channel audio sources. Front left and right speakers (FL and FR) The front speakers are used for the main source sound plus effect sounds.
16 En CONNECTIONS Be sure to connect the left ch annel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (black) prope rly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the spea kers, and if the polarity of the speaker co nnections is incorrec t, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.
17 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION FRONT termin als Connect front left and right spe akers to thes e terminals. CENTER terminals Connect a center speak er to these terminals. SURROUND terminals Connect surround left and right speakers to these terminals.

19 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Some of the speakers ha v e sp eak er wire connections that allow bi-amplif ication to enha nce the performance of the speaker system. This unit allo ws you to make bi- amplification co nnection to one speak er system. Check if your speakers support bi-ampli f ication.
20 En CONNECTIONS ■ Aud i o j a cks This unit has three types of audio jacks. Connection depends on the a v ailability of audio jacks on your other components. A UDIO jacks For con ventional analog audio si gnals transmitted via left and right analog audio cables .
21 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION This unit has the HDMI IN 1, HDMI IN 2, HDMI IN 3 and HDMI OUT jacks for digital audio and video signal input/ output. Connect the HDMI IN 1, HDMI IN 2 or HDMI IN 3 ja ck of this unit to the HDMI output jack of other HDMI components (such as a D VD player).
22 En CONNECTIONS ■ Audio signal flow • 2 -channel as well as multi-channel PCM, D olby Digital and DTS signals input at the HDMI IN 1, HDMI IN 2 or HDMI IN 3 jack can be output at the HDM I OUT jack only when “Support Audio” is set to “Other” (see page 115) .
23 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Connect your TV (or projector) to the HDMI OUT ja ck, the COMPONENT VIDEO MONIT OR OUT jacks, the S VIDEO MONITOR OUT jack or the VIDE O MONITOR OUT jack of this unit. Do not connect this u nit or other components to the A C power suppl y until al l connections between componen ts are co mplete.
24 En CONNECTIONS Do not connect this unit or othe r components to the A C power supply until all connections between components are complete . • When “Conversio n” is set to “Off” (see p age 102), be sure to make the same type of video connections as those made for your TV (see page 23).
25 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ Connecting a D VD recorder , PVR or VCR *1 When you connect another VCR to this un it, connect it to the VCR 1 terminals (S VIDEO IN, VID EO IN, A UDIO IN, S VIDEO OUT, VIDEO OUT and A UDIO OUT jacks) same as DVR/V CR 2 terminals except the DIGIT AL INPUT (COAXIAL) jack.
26 En CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting audio component s • T o mak e a digital connection to a component other than the def au lt component assigned to either the DIGIT AL INPUT jack or the DIGIT AL OUTPUT jack, selec t the correspondi ng setting for “O ption”, “Optical Output”, or “Coaxial Input” in “I/O Assignment” (see page 96).
27 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ Connecting an externa l amplifier This unit has more than e nough power for an y home use. Howe v er , if you wa nt to add more power to the speak er output or if you want to use another amplifier , connect an externa l amplifi er to the PRE OUT jacks.
28 En CONNECTIONS This unit is equipped with 6 additio nal input jacks (left and right FR ONT , CENTER, left and right SURR OUND and SUBWOOFER) for discrete mu lti-channel input from a multi -format player , e xternal de coder , sound processor or pre-amplifier .
29 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION This unit is equipped with the DOCK te rminal on the rear panel that allows y ou to connect a Y AMAHA iPod uni versal dock (such as the YDS-10, sold separately) where you can station your iPod and control playback of your iPod using the supplied remote control.
30 En CONNECTIONS T o connect this unit to your n etwork, plug one end of a network cable (CA T -5 or highe r straight cable) into the NETWORK port of this un it, and plug the other end into one of the LAN ports on your router that supports the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configura tion Protocol) serv er function.
31 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Both FM and AM indoor ante nnas are supplied with this unit. Connect each antenna correctly to the designated terminals.
32 En CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting the A C power cabl e Use the supplied A C cable. Do not use other A C po wer cables as doing so may result in fire or electrical shock. Plug the supplied A C power cable into the A C inlet after al l other connections are complete, then plug the AC po wer cable into an A C wall outlet.
33 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION If you are to use 6 ohm speakers, set “SPEAKER IMP .” to “6 Ω MIN” as follo ws BEFORE using this unit. 4 ohm speakers can be als o used as the front speaker s. 1 Make sure this uni t is turned off. See page 34 for details about turning on or off this unit.
34 En CONNECTIONS When all connections are complete, turn on this un it. ■ T u rning on this unit Press MASTER ON/OFF on the fr ont panel inward to the ON position to turn on this unit. When you turns on this unit by pressing MASTER ON/ OFF, the main zone is turned on.
AUTO SETUP 35 En PREP ARA TION PREP ARA TION This unit employs the YP A O (Y AMAHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer) tec hnology which lets you av oid troublesome listening-based spea ker setup and achie v es highly accurate s ound adjustments automatically .
36 En AUTO SETUP 3 Make sure of the following c heck points before starting the Auto Setup operations. • Speakers are connected appropriately . • Supplied optimizer microphone is connected to this unit and placed appropriately . • Headphones are disconnected from this unit.
37 En AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION 9 Repeat steps 7 and 8 until you set all the desired parameters. This unit performs the following checks: Wiring (Speaker wiring) Checks which speakers are connected and the polarity of each speaker .
38 En AUTO SETUP 11 Press ENTER to start the setup procedure. This unit starts the auto setup procedure. Loud test tones are output from each speak er during the auto setup procedure. During the setup procedure, “Measuring...” appears i n the GUI screen.
39 En AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION 2 Press k / n repeat edly a nd the n h to select “Auto Setup”. 3 Press k to select “Information”. 4 Press h and then n repeatedly to select the desired check items. Wiring (Sp eaker wiring) Displays the polarity of each connected speaker .
PLAYBACK 40 En Extreme caution should be exer cised when y ou play back CDs encoded in DTS. If yo u pla y bac k a CD encoded in DTS on a DTS-in compatible CD player , you will only hear some unwanted noise that ma y damage your speakers. Check whether your CD pla y er supports CDs encoded in DTS.
41 En PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION 3 Star t playback on the selected source component or select a broadcast station. • Refer to the operating instruct ions for the source component. • See page 56 for details about tuning instructions. • See page 67 for details a bout XM Satellite Radio tuning instructions.
42 En PLAYBACK This unit comes with a v ariety of input jac ks. Use this feature (Audio input jack select) to switch the input jac k assigned to an input source when more than o ne jacks are assigned to an input source. y • W e recommend setting Audio input jack select to “A UTO” in most cases.
43 En PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION Use this feature to select th e component connected to the MUL TI CH INPUT jacks (see page 28) as the input source. Rotate the input selector on the front panel to select MUL TI CH INPUT (or MUL TI CH IN on the remote control).
44 En PLAYBACK This unit features a sophisticated graphical user interfac e (GUI) screen that helps you to control the amplifier function of this unit. W ith the GUI screen, you can vie w the informatio n of the signals being inpu t and the status of this unit.

50 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS ■ Stereo pla ybac k MOVIE Spectacle This progra m creates the extremely wide s ound field of a 70- mm movie theater. It precisely repr oduces the source soun d in detai l, making both the vide o and the sound field incred ibly real.
51 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS BAS I C OPERA TION ■ Using sound field pr ograms without surr ound speaker s (Virtual CINEMA DSP) V irtual CINEMA DSP allo ws you to e njoy the CINEMA DSP programs without surr ound speakers. It creates virtual speakers to repr oduce the natural sound f ield.
USING AUDIO FEATURES 52 En Use the Pure Direct mode to enjo y the pure f idelity sound of the selected source. When the Pure Direct mode is acti vated, this unit play s back the selected s ource with the least circuitry . Press PURE DIRECT on th e front panel (or on the remote control) to turn on or off the Pure Direct mode.
53 En USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can adjust the output level of each speaker while listening to a music source. This is also possible when playing sources input at the MUL TI CH INPUT jacks. This operation will override the level adjustments made in “Auto Setup” (see page 3 5) and “Speak er Le vel” (see page 10 9).
54 En USING AUDIO FEATURES Compression artif acts (such as the MP3 format) are created by a lossy compressi on scheme where the audio is resampled to lower the bit rate and to remov e sounds that are indistinguishable to t ypical human hearing.
55 En USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION The night listening modes are designed to improv e listenability at lo wer v olume s or at night. Choose either “NIGHT :CINEMA” or “NIGHT :MUSIC” depending on the type of material you are playing.
FM/AM TUNING 56 En There are 2 tuning methods: automatic a nd manual. Automatic tuning is ef fecti ve when st ation signals are strong and there is no interference.
57 En FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION Automatic tuning is ef fecti v e when station signals are strong and there is no in terference. 1 Rotate the INPUT selector to select “TUNER” as the input source. 2 Press FM/AM to select the reception band. “FM” or “AM” appears in the front panel display .
58 En FM/AM TUNING If the signal receiv ed from the station you w ant to select is weak, tune into it manua lly . Manually tuning into an FM st ation automatically switches the tuner to monaural reception to increa se the signal quality . 1 Rotate the INPUT selector to select “TUNER” as the input source.
59 En FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can use the automatic pres et tuning feature to store up to 40 FM stations with strong signals (A1 to E8: 8 preset station numbers in each of the 5 preset station groups) in order . Y ou can then recall an y preset station easily by selecting the pres et station number .

USING IPOD 75 En BAS I C OPERA TION Once you hav e stationed your iPod in a Y AMAHA iPod universa l dock (such as the YDS-10, sold separately) connected to the DOCK terminal of this unit (see page 29), you can enjo y playback of your iPod using th e supplied remote control.

The DTS signal is a digital bitstrea m. Attempting to digi tally record the DTS bitstream will result in noise being rec orded.
ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS 84 En ■ Selecting decoder s f or 2-channe l source s (surr ound decode mode) Use this feature to play ba ck sources with selected decoders. Y ou can pl ay back 2-channel sources on multi- channels. 1 Set the operation mode selector to AMP and then press SUR.
85 En ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS AD V ANCED OPERA TION y When you select the surr ound decode mode for Dolby Digital, DT S or DTS 96/24 sour ces, this unit automatically selects “SURROUND DECODE Dolby Digital”, “SURR OUND DECODE DTS” or “S URR OUND DECODE DTS 96/24” program.
