CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 3 INTRODUCTION 1 MASTER ON/OFF Press inward to the ON position to turn on the power of this unit. Press again to release it outward to the OFF position to turn off this uni t. See page 17 for details. Even when this unit is turned off, this unit consumes a small amount of pow er to preserv e the memory .

CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 8 9 SPEAKERS A/B T urns on or off the set of speakers connected to the SPEAKERS A and/or SPEAKERS B terminals on the rear panel of this unit when the corresponding button is pressed each time. 0 CODE SET Use to set up remote cont rol codes (see page 45).
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 9 INTRODUCTION This section describes the function of each button on the Zone 2 remote control used to control Zone 2. Y ou can also use the Z one 2 remote co ntrol to control the XM Satellite Radio features and Y AMAHA CD players.

CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 11 INTRODUCTION ■ Notes on batteries • Change all of the batteries if the operation range of the remote controls d ecreases. • Use AA, R6, UM-3 batteries for the re mote control and AAA, R03, UM-4 batte ries for the Zone 2 remote control.
CONNECTIONS 12 Be sure to con nect the left channel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (bla ck) properly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the speakers, a nd if the polarity of the speaker con nec tions is incorrect, the sou nd will be unnatural and lack bass.
13 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION • Do not connect this unit or other com ponents to the main power until all connections between components are complete. • All connections must be correct: L (left) to L , R (right) to R, “+” to “+” a nd “–” to “–”.
14 CONNECTIONS Both AM and FM indoor antennas are include d with this unit. In general, these antennas should pro vid e sufficient signal strength. Connect each antenna corre ctly to the designated terminals. • A properly installed outdoor antenna provides clearer reception than an indoor one.
15 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ Connecting the AM loop antenna 1 Set up the AM loop antenna . 2 Press and hold the tab. 3 Inser t the AM loop antenna lea d wires into the AM ANT terminal. 4 Release the tab. 5 Repeat steps 2 to 4 to insert the AM loop antenna lead wires in to the GND terminal.
16 CONNECTIONS Plug the power cable into the AC IN on the rear panel of this unit and then plug the power supply cord into the AC wall outlet after all other connections are complete. ■ COUPLER jacks Removing the jumper pins from the PRE OUT/MAIN IN jacks enable s this unit to operate separate ly as a control amplifier or a power amplif ier .
17 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION When all connec tions are complete, turn on the power of this unit. 1 Press MASTER ON/OFF on the front panel inward to the ON posi tion to turn on the power of this uni t.
PLAYING AND RECORDING 18 Extreme caution should be exercised when you play back CDs encoded in DTS. If you play back a CD encoded in DTS on a DTS-incompati ble CD player , you will only hear some unwanted noise that may damage your speakers. Check whether your CD player supports CDs encoded in DTS.
19 PLAYING AND RECORDING BAS I C OPERA TION 5 Adjust the tonal qual ity by using the B ASS, TREBLE, B ALANCE and LOUDNESS controls or the CD DIRECT AMP and the PURE DIRECT buttons on the fr ont panel.
20 PLAYING AND RECORDING ■ Adjusting the B A LANCE contr ol Adjusts the sound output balanc e of the left and right speakers to compensate fo r sound imbalance caused by speaker locations or lis tening room conditions.
21 PLAYING AND RECORDING BAS I C OPERA TION • The VOLUME, BAS S, TREBLE, BALANCE and LOUDNESS controls and the CD DIRECT AMP and the PU RE DIRECT buttons have no ef fect on the source being recorded. • Check the copyright laws in your co untry to record from records, CDs, radio, etc.
22 PLAYING AND RECORDING Use this feature to automa tically set this unit to the standby mode after a certain amount of time. The sleep timer is useful when you are goi ng to sleep while this unit is playing or recording a s ource. The sleep timer also automatically turns off any ex ternal components connected to the AC OUTLETS.
23 PLAYING AND RECORDING BAS I C OPERA TION 1 Press MUTE on the remote control to mute the sound output. The MUTE indicator flas hes in the front panel display and MUTE ON appears in the front panel display . After a few seconds, MUTE ON disappears from the front panel display .
FM/AM TUNING 24 There are 2 tuning methods; automatic and manual. Select either met hod according to your preference and the strength of station signals.
25 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION Manual tuning is effecti ve when station signals are weak. 1 Rotate the INPUT sele ctor (or press TUNER on the remote control) to select TUNER as the input sour ce . 2 Press FM/AM on the fr on t panel to select the reception band (FM or AM).
26 FM/AM TUNING Y ou can use the automatic preset tuning method to automatically st ore FM stations. This function enabl es this unit to automatically tune in to FM stations with strong signals and store up to 40 (8 stations in each of the 5 groups, A1 to E8) of those rece iv ed stations in order .
27 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION ■ Customized automatic pre set tuning Y ou can specify a preset station group and a preset station number from which thi s unit stores the FM stations receiv ed by automatic preset tuning. 1 Press and hold MEMOR Y on the front panel for more than 3 seconds.
28 FM/AM TUNING Y ou can also manually store up to 40 stations (8 stations in each of the 5 groups, A1 to E8). Y ou can then easily recall any preset stations b y selec ting the preset station numbe rs where they are stored. 1 Repeat step s 1 to 4 in “Automat ic tuning” or in “Manual tuning” to tune into a station.

34 XM SATELLITE RADIO TUNING 1 Rotate the INPU T selector on the fro nt panel (or press XM on the remote control) to select XM as the input source. The XM information (channel number/name, category or artist name/song title) for the currently selected cha nnel appears in the front panel display .
35 XM SATELLITE RADIO TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can search fo r the desired channel by using one of the three search modes (All Cha nnel Search mode, Category Search mode or Preset Search mode). Y ou can also enter the number directly to se lect the desired channel (For details, see “Direct Number Access mode” on page 37).
