Welcome to the MD4S 9 —Owner’s Manual W elcome to the MD4S MD4S Features Mixer The mix er section is an analog mix er with four MIC/LINE and four LINE inputs. • Continuously variable GAIN contr ols are pro vided on input channels 1–4, accepting signals ranging from mic input to line level.

12 Welcome to the MD4S —Owner’s Manual MD4S songs and blank areas On the MD4S, reco rdings are made in units called “songs. ” Each song is assigned a number indicating the order in which it was r ecor ded.
Front and rear panel 13 —Owner’s Manual Front and rear panel This section explains the names and functions of each par t of the MD4S. Mono Inputs A GAIN control This adjusts the input sensitivity of the MIC/LINE input jack (jacks 1 and 2 on the top panel).
14 Welcome to the MD4S —Owner’s Manual C CUE P AN/CUE LEVEL controls These two c ontrols adjust the pan and signal level of the signal that is sent to the CUE bus. The signal that is sent to the CUE bus will depend on the setting of the FLIP sw itch 2 .
Front and rear panel 15 —Owner’s Manual Stereo Inputs H Level (5/6), (7/8) controls These controls adjust the lev el of the signals input from STEREO INPUT jacks 5/6 or 7/8. These input signals are al wa ys sent t o the ST bus, and are mix e d with the signals from input channels 1–4 and the playback signals of the tracks.

Front and rear panel 17 —Owner’s Manual STOP/TOC WRITE button ........... This button st ops playback/r ecording/r ehearsal. W hen stopped, this button functions as the TOC WRITE butt on to update the T OC (page 11). B AUTO PUNCH I/O button This button turns the auto punch-in/out function on/off.

Front and rear panel 19 —Owner’s Manual Display A TOC EDIT indicator This indicator will light when the TOC (table of cont ents) needs to be updat ed, such as after a new rec ording or edit. If the power of the MD4S is tur ned off while the T OC EDIT indicator is lit, the reco rded or edited c ontent ma y be lost.

26 Basic operation —Owner’s Manual T urning on the MD4S 1. Plug the power cable into an AC outlet. 2. Press the POWER switch located on the rear panel of the MD4S. When the power is turned on, the display will light. T o turn off the MD4S, pr ess the PO WER switch again.

Splitting a song into two (Song Divide) Song Divide is a function that splits a song into two parts.

Editing functions 81 —Owner’s Manual Moving a song (Song Move) Song M ove is a function that mo ves a song t o a blank area. This is conv enient when you wish to rec ord additional mat erial to extend a pr ev iously-rec orded song, or t o organize the blank area on a disc.

Other functions 85 —Owner’s Manual T itling discs and songs A title of up to 127 characters can be assigned to eac h disc and to each song on the disc.

90 Advanced recording techniques —Owner’s Manual MIDI functions The MD4S is an ideal device for recor ding vocals, guitar , or other acoustic instruments, but b y using its MIDI functionality you can synchr onize it with a MIDI sequencer or with another MD4S, or control the transport of the MD4S from an external MIDI device.
MIDI functions 91 —Owner’s Manual About MTC and MIDI Clock MT C and MIDI Clock are different types of MIDI messages used for synchronization between MIDI dev ices. MT C transmits absolute time information in units of a “frame” (1/30 of a second).
92 Advanced recording techniques —Owner’s Manual ■ MIDI sequencer settings T o use MT C, your MIDI sequence r must be set to synchr onize to the MT C messages it recei ves. In this case, you must set the frame rate t o 30 frames/second. For details on making this setting, r efer to the o w ner’ s manual of your MIDI sequenc er .
MIDI functions 93 —Owner’s Manual 4. Rotate the CURSOR shuttle to the right to select the meter/tempo parameter , and rotate the DA T A dial to set the meter or tempo. It is not possible to set the measur e location of step A. The range of settings is as follows.

MIDI functions 95 —Owner’s Manual Connect the two MD4S r ecor ders as follows. ■ Settings for the MTC Slave MD4S 1. Press the UTILITY button, rotate the DA T A dial to make the display read “MIDI Sync,” and press the ENTER button. The display will indicate the current MIDI S ync setting.
