CONNECTIONS 12 En The speak er layout below sh o ws the speake r setting we recommend. Y ou can use it to enjoy CINEMA DSP and multi-channel audio sources. Front left and right speakers (FL and FR) The front speakers are used for the main source sound plus effect sounds.
13 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Be sure to connec t the left cha nnel (L), right ch annel (R), “+” (red) and “–” ( black) properly . If the connections are f aulty , no sound will be heard fro m th e speake rs, and if the polarity of the speake r connections is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.
14 En CONNECTIONS FRONT terminals Connect front left and right speakers to these terminals. CENTER terminals Connect a center speake r to these terminals. SURROUND terminals Connect surround left and ri ght speake rs to these terminals. SURROUND B A CK terminals Connect surround back left an d right speakers to these terminals.
15 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION 5 Hook the speaker termi nal wrench onto the WRENCH HOLDER on the rear panel of this unit when not in use. ■ Connecting the banana plug The banana plug is a single- pole electrical connector widely used to terminate spea ker cables.
16 En CONNECTIONS W Some of the speak ers ha ve speak er wire connec tions that allo w bi-amplif ication to enha nce the performance of the speaker system. This unit allows y ou to make bi- amplification connection to one speak er system. Check if your speakers support bi-amplif i cation.
17 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ A udio jac ks This unit has three types of audio jacks. Connection depends on the av ailability of audio jacks on your other components. A UDIO jacks For con ventional analo g audio signals transmitted via left and right analog audio cables .
18 En CONNECTIONS This unit has the HDMI IN 1, HDMI IN 2 and HDMI OUT jacks for digital audi o and video signal i nput/output. Connect the HDMI IN 1 or HDMI IN 2 jack of this unit to th e HDMI output jack of other HDM I components (such as a DVD player).
19 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ A udio signal flow • 2 -channel as well as multi-channel PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS signals input at the HDMI IN 1 or HDMI IN 2 jack can be output at the HDMI OUT jack only when “SUPPOR T A UDIO” is set to “OTHER” (see page 92).
20 En CONNECTIONS Connect your TV (or projector) to the HDMI OUT ja ck, the COMPONENT VIDEO M ONITOR OUT jacks, the S VIDEO MONITOR OUT jack or the VIDEO MONIT OR OUT jack of this unit. Do not connect this uni t or othe r components to the A C power supply until all connections between components are complete .
21 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Do not connect this u nit or other components to the A C power suppl y until all connections between componen ts are co mplete. • When “V CONV .” is set to “OFF” (see page 96), be sure to make the same type of vid eo connections as those made for your TV (see page 20).
22 En CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting a D VD recorder , PVR or VCR *1 When you connect another VCR to this unit, connect it to th e VCR 1 terminals (S VIDEO IN, VIDEO IN, AUDIO IN, S VIDEO OUT, VIDEO OUT and AUDIO OUT jacks) same as D VR/VCR 2 terminals except the DIGI T AL INPUT (COAXIAL) jack.
23 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ Connecting audio compo nents • T o make a digital connection to a component other than the default comp onent assigned to each the DIGIT AL INPUT jack or the DIGI.
24 En CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting an e xternal amplifier This unit has more than enough p ower f or any home use. Howe ver , if you want to add more po wer to the speaker output or if you w ant to use a nother amplifier , connect an external amplifi er to the PRE OUT jacks.
25 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION This unit is equipped with 6 additi onal input jacks (left and right FR ONT , CENTER, left and right SURR OUND and SUBWOOFER) for discrete multi-channel i nput from a multi-format player , extern al decoder , sound processor or pre- amplifier .
26 En CONNECTIONS This unit is equipped with the DOCK term inal on the rear panel that allows you to connect a Y AMAHA iPod univ ersal dock (such as th e YDS-10, sold separately) where you can station you r iPod and control playb ack of your iPod using the supplied re mote control.
27 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Both FM and AM indoor ante nnas are supplied with this unit. Connect each antenna correctly to the designated terminals. In general, th ese antennas should provide suff icient signal strength. • The AM loop antenna should be placed aw ay from this unit.
28 En CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting the A C power cabl e Use the supplied A C cable. Do not use other A C power cables as doing so may result in fire or electrical shock. Plug the supplied A C power cable into the A C inlet after al l other connections are complete, then plug the A C po wer cable into an A C wall outlet.
29 En CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION If you are to use 6 ohm speakers, set “SPEAKER IMP .” to “6 Ω MIN” as follow s BEFORE using this unit. 4 ohm speakers can be als o used as the front speaker s. 1 Make sure this uni t is turned off. See page 30 for details about turning on or off this unit.
30 En CONNECTIONS When all connections are complete, turn on this un it. ■ T urning on this unit Press MASTER ON/OFF on the fr ont panel inward to the ON position to turn on this unit. When you turns on this unit by pressing MASTER ON/ OFF, the main zone is turned on.
AUTO SETUP 31 En PREP ARA TION This unit employs the YP A O (Y AMAHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer) tec hnology which lets you av oid troublesome listening-based spea ker setup and achie ves highly accurate s ound adjustments automatically .
32 En AUTO SETUP 3 Make sure of the following c heck points before starting the A UT O SETUP operations. • Speakers are connected appropriately . • Supplied optimizer microphone is connected to this unit and placed appropriately . • Headphones are disconnected from this unit.
33 En AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION V olume le vel LEVEL Checks and adjusts the v olume le v el of each speaker . Choices: CHECK , SKIP • Select “ CHECK” to automaticall y check and adjust this item. • Select “SKIP” to skip this item and perform no adjustments.
34 En AUTO SETUP 9 Press ENTER to displa y the setup results in detail. 10 Press l / h repeatedly to tog gle between the setup result displays. y If you are not satisfied with th e results or want to manually adjust each parameter , run “MANUAL SETUP” (see page 83).
35 En AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION 11 Press ENTER to return to the top “RESUL T :EXIT” display . 12 Make sure the pointer is pointing at “SET” and “CANCEL” and then press l / h to select “SET” or “CANCEL”. Choices: SET , CANCEL • Select “SET ” to conf irm the “A UTO SETUP” results.
36 En AUTO SETUP ■ If “W ARNING” appears When this unit detect s pot ential problems during the “A UTO SETUP” procedure, “W AR NING” appea rs in the “RESUL T :EXIT” display . Check the warning messages to correct your speaker settings.
PLAYBACK 37 En BAS I C OPERA TION Extreme caution shou ld be exer cised when you play bac k CDs encoded in DTS. If you play back a CD encoded in DTS on a DTS-incompatible CD play er , yo u will onl y hear some unwanted noise that may damage your speakers.
38 En PLAYBACK 3 Start playback on the selected sour ce component or select a broadcast station. • Refer to the operating inst ructions for the source component. • See page 53 for details ab out tuning instructions. • See page 64 for details ab out XM Satellite Radio tuning instructions.
39 En PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION This unit comes with a v ariety of input jacks. Use this feature (Audio input ja ck select) to swit ch the input jack assigned to an input source wh en more than one jacks are assigned to an input source. y • W e recommend setting Audio input jack select to “A UTO” in most cases.
40 En PLAYBACK Use this feature to select th e component connected to the MUL TI CH INPUT jacks (see page 25) as the input source. Rotate the input selector on the fr ont panel to select MUL TI CH INPUT (or MUL TI CH IN on the remote contr ol).
41 En PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can display the format, sa mpling frequency , channel, bit rate and flag data of the current in put signal. 1 Set the operation mode selector to AMP and then press SET MENU on the remote control. The top “SET MENU” disp lay appears in the OSD.
42 En PLAYBACK Y ou can combine a video image from a video source with sound from an audio source. For example, you can enjoy listening to classica l music while vie wing beautiful scenery from the video source on the video monitor . Press the input selector buttons on the remote control to select a video source and then an audio source.
SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS 43 En BAS I C OPERA TION This unit is equipped with a variety of precise digital de coders that allo w you to enjoy multi-channel playback from almost any stereo or multi-channel sound source.
44 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS y Select a sound field pr ogram based on your listening prefer ence, not merely on the name of the program, etc. ■ For music audio sourc es y For audio music sources, we also recommend using the Pure Di rect mode (see page 49), the “STRAIGHT” mode (see page 48) or surround decode mode (s ee page 79).

48 En SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS ■ Using sound field pr ograms withou t surroun d speaker s (Virtual CINEMA DSP) V irtual CINEMA DSP allows you to enjoy the CINEMA DSP programs without surround speak ers. It creates virtual speakers to reproduc e the natural sound fi eld.
USING AUDIO FEATURES 49 En BAS I C OPERA TION Use the Pure Direct mode to enjoy the pure high fidelity sound of the selected source. When the Pure Direct mode is activ ated, this unit plays ba ck the selected source with the least circuitry . Press PURE DIRECT on the fr ont panel (or on the remote control) to turn on or of f the Pure Direct mode.
50 En USING AUDIO FEATURES Y ou can adjust the output level of each speake r while listening to a music source. This is also possible when playing sources input at the MUL TI CH INPUT jacks. This operation will override the le vel adjustments made in “A UT O SETUP” (see page 31) and “SP LEVEL” (see page 89).
51 En USING AUDIO FEATURES BAS I C OPERA TION Compression artifacts (such as the MP3 format) are created by a lossy compression scheme where the audio is resampled to lower the bit rate and to remove sounds that are indistinguishabl e to typical human hearing.
52 En USING AUDIO FEATURES The night listening modes are designed to improve listenability at lower v olumes or at night. Choose either “NIGHT :CINEMA” or “NIGHT:MUSI C” depending on the type of material you are playing.
FM/AM TUNING 53 En BAS I C OPERA TION There are 2 tuning methods: automatic a nd manual. Automatic tuning is effecti v e when station signa ls are strong and there is no interference. If the signal from th e station you want to select is weak, t une into it manually .
54 En FM/AM TUNING Automatic tuning is ef fectiv e when station signals are strong and there is no interference. 1 Rotate the INPUT selector to select “TUNER” as the input source. 2 Press FM/AM to select the reception band. “FM” or “AM” appears in the front panel display .
55 En FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION If the signal recei ved from the station you want to select is weak, tune into it manually . Manually tuning into an FM st ation automa tically switches the tuner to monaural reception to increase the signal quality .
56 En FM/AM TUNING Y ou can use th e automatic preset tuning feature to store up to 40 FM stations with strong signals (A1 to E8: 8 preset station numbers in each of the 5 preset station groups) in order . Y ou can then recall an y preset station easily by selecting the preset station numbe r .

73 En USING iPod BAS I C OPERA TION 1 Set the operation mode selector to SOURCE and then press DISPLA Y on the remote contro l. The follo wing display appea rs in the OSD. 2 Press k / n / l / h on the remote contr ol to navigate the iP od menu and then press ENTER to begin pla ybac k of the selected song.
RECORDING 74 En Recording adjustments and ot her operations are performed from the reco rding components. Re fer to the operating instructions for those components. The DTS signal is a digital bitstream. Attemp ting to digitall y recor d the DTS bitstream will result in noise being recorded.
ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS 75 En AD V ANCED OPERA TION Y ou can enjoy good quality sound with the initial f actory settings. Although you do not hav e to change the initial factory settings, you can change some of the parameters to better suit the input source or your listening room.
76 En ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS ■ Sound field parame ter descriptions Y ou can adjust the v alues of certain digi tal sound f ield parameters so that the sound f ields are recreated accurately in your listening room. Not all of the follo wing parameters are found in e v ery program.
77 En ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS AD V ANCED OPERA TION ROOM SIZE P.ROOM SIZE S.ROOM SIZE SB ROOM SIZE Room size. Presence, su rround, and surround back room size. Adjusts the appar ent size of the surround sound f ield. The lar ger the v alue, the larger the su rround sound f ield beco mes.
78 En ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS REV.TIME Re verberation time. Adjusts the amount of time taken for the dense, subsequent re verberation sound to decay by 60 dB at 1 kHz. This chan ges the apparent size of the acoustic environment over an e xtremely wide range.
79 En ADVANCED SOUND CONFIGURATIONS AD V ANCED OPERA TION ■ Selecting decoder s f or 2-c hannel sourc es (surr ound decode mode) Use this feature to play back sources with selected decoders. Y ou can play back 2-channel sources on multi- channels. 1 Set the operation mode selector to AMP and then press SUR.
