General informati on 3 EMU25300 Three Stars — Ultra Low Emission The three-star label identifies engines that meet the Air Resource s Board ’ s 2008 ex- haust emission standards. Engines meeting these standards have 65% lower emissions than One Star-Low-Emission engines.

General informati on 5 EMU25413 Label (counter rotation models) W ARNING EWM01281 Use only a counterclockwise rotation pro- peller with this engine. Counterclockwise propellers are marked with a letter “ L ” after the size indication.
General information 6 Crossing: (you are t raveling across the other vessel ’ s path) Overtaking: (you are passing or being passed by another vess el) In the following illustration, your boat is in the center. You shoul d give the right-of-way to any vessels shown in white area (you are the Give-Way vesse l).
General informati on 7 vessels, the op erator should sou nd a pro- longed blast on the whistle (4 to 6 seconds). I f another vessel is around the bend, it too should sound the w histle. Even if no reply is heard, however, the vessel s hould still pro- ceed around the bend with caution.

General information 10 EMU25700 Battery requireme nt CAUTION: ECM01060 Do not use a battery that does not meet the specified capacity. If a batter y which does not meet specifications is used, the elec- tric system could perform poorly or be overloaded, causing electric system dam- age.

EMU25770 Start-in-gear protection Yamaha outboard motors or Yamaha -ap- proved remote control units are equipped with start-in-gear protection device(s). This feature permits the engine to be started only w hen it is in neutral .
Basic components 12 EMU25796 Main components NOTE: * May not be ex actly as shown; also may not be included as stand ard equipment on all models . EMU26180 Remote control The remote control lever actuates both the shifter and the throttle. The electrical switches are mounted on the remote co ntrol box.
Basic components 13 EMU26190 Remote control lever Moving the lev er forward from the neutral po- sition engages forward gear. Pulling the leve r back from neutral engages reverse. The en- gine will c ontinue to run at idle until the lever is moved about 3 5 ° (a detent c an be felt).
Basic components 14 NOTE: The neutral throttle lever will operate only when the rem ote control lever is i n neutral. The remote control lever will operate only when the neutral throttle le ver is in the closed position.
Basic components 15 When constant speed is desired, tighten the adjuster to maintain the de sired throttle set- ting. EMU25990 Engine stop lanyard switch The lock plate must be attached to the engine stop switch for the engine to run. The lanyard should be attache d to a secure pl ace on the operator ’ s clothing, or arm or leg.
Basic components 16 With the main switch i n the “” (start) po- sition, the starter motor turns to start the en- gine. When the ke y is released, it returns automatically to the “” (on) position.
Basic components 17 NOTE: For instructions on using the power trim and tilt switch, see page 37. EMU26161 Power tr im and ti lt switche s (twin binnacle type) The power trim and tilt system adjusts the out- board motor angle in relation to the transom.
Basic components 18 EMU26340 Tilt support lever for power trim and tilt or hydro tilt model To keep the outbo ard motor in the tilted up po- sition, lock the tilt support leve r to the clamp bracket. EMU26382 Top cowling loc k lever (pull up type) To remove the engine top cowling, pull up the lock lever(s) a nd lift off the cowling.
Basic components 19 EMU26491 Digital tachometer The tachometer shows the engine speed and has the following function s. NOTE: All segments of the display will light momen- tarily after the m ain switch is turned on and will return to normal thereafter.
Basic components 20 EMU26600 Speedo meter (dig ital type) This gauge shows the b oat speed. NOTE: After the main switch is first turned on, all seg- ments o f the display come on as a test. After a few seconds, the gaug e will change to nor- mal operation.
Basic components 21 EMU26650 Hour meter (digital type) This meter shows the nu mber of hours the en- gine has been run. It can be set to show the total number of ho urs or the nu mber of hours for the current trip. The displa y can also be turned on and off.
Basic components 22 NOTE: The clock op erates on battery power. Discon- necting the battery will stop the c lock. Reset the clock after connecting the battery . EMU26710 Fuel gauge The fuel level is indicated by eight se gments. When all segments are showing, the fuel tank is full.
Basic components 23 EMU26740 Fuel manageme nt meter The fuel management meter shows the state of the fuel consumption while the engine is running. NOTE: After the main switch is first turned on, all seg- ments o f the display come on as a test. After a few seconds, the gaug e will change to nor- mal operation.
Basic components 24 ● The fuel consumption meter and fuel econ - omy meter will indicate th e same unit of measurement. EMU26760 Fuel consumption me ter This gauge displays the total amount of fuel consumed since the ga uge was last reset.
Basic components 25 Press the “” (mode) button repeatedly until the indicato r on the face of the gauge points to “” (synchronize r). NOTE: If the two engines ’ sp eeds are not synchro - nized while cruising, they can be synchro - nized by adjusting trim angl e or throttle.
Basic components 26 ● The buzzer will soun d. If the warning system ha s activated, stop the engine and check the c ooling water i nlet for clogging. NOTE: Dual engine drive users : Should the overheat warning system of one engine activate, the engine will slow d own and the buzzer will sound.
Basic components 27 CAUTION: ECM00100 Do not continue to run the engine if the low oil pressure war ning indicator is on. Serious engine damage could occur.
Operation 28 EMU26901 Installation CAUTION: ECM00110 Incorrect engine height or o bstructions to smooth water flow (such as the design or condition of the boat, or accessories such as transom ladders or depth finder tr ans- ducers) can create airborne water spray while the boat is cr uising.
Operation 29 EMU26930 Mounting height (boat bottom) To run your boat at optimum efficiency, the water resistance (drag) of the boat and out- board motor must be made as little as possi- ble. The mounting height of the outboard motor greatly affec ts the water resistance.
Operation 30 EMU27102 Preoperation checks W ARNING EWM00080 If any item in the preoperation check is not working properly, have it inspected and repaired before operating the outboard motor. Otherwise an accident could occur. CAUTION: ECM00120 Do not start the engine out of water.
Operation 31 3. Securely cl ose the cap after filling the tank. Wipe up any spilled fue l. EMU27270 Ring Free Fue l Additiv e Gasoline is a precis e blend of many different substances, each chosen to give certain c har- acteristics.
Operation 32 NOTE: The start-in-gear protection device prevents the engine from starti ng except when in neu- tral. 2. Attach the engine stop switch lanyard to a secure place on you r clothing, or your arm or leg. Then install the lock plate on the other end of the lanyard into the en- gine stop switch.
Operation 33 4. Turn the main s witch to “” (start), and hold it for a maximum of 5 s econds. 5. Immediately after the engine starts, re- lease the main switc h to return it to “” (on). CAUTION: ECM00191 ● Never turn the main switch to “” (start) while the engine is running.
Operation 34 hole is blocked. Consult your Yamaha dealer if the problem cannot be located and corrected. ● If the cooling passage is frozen, it may take awhile for water to start flowing out of the pilot hole. EMU27740 Shifting W ARNING EWM00180 Before shifting, make sure there are no swimmers or obstacles in the water near you.
Operation 35 Remote control models Pull up the neutral interlock trig ger (if equipped) and move the remote control leve r quickly and firmly from neu tral to reverse. EMU27820 Stopping engine Before stopping the engine, first let it cool o ff for a few minutes at idle or low speed.
Operation 36 engine, and propeller. Correct trim is also af- fected by vari ables such as the load in the boat, sea conditions, and running s peed. W ARNING EWM00740 Excessive trim for the operating condi- tions (either trim up or trim down) can cause boat instability and can make steer- ing the boat more difficult.
Operation 37 EMU27911 Adjusting boat trim When the boat is on plane, a bow-up attitude results in less drag, greater stability and effi- ciency. This is generally w hen the keel line of the boat is up about 3 to 5 degrees. With the bow up, the boat may have a greater tenden- cy to steer to one side or the other.
Operation 38 connect the fuel line if the outboard mo- tor is equipped with a fuel joint. Otherwise fuel may leak. CAUTION: ECM00990 ● Before tilting the outboard motor, follow the procedure under “ Stopping engine ” in this chapter. Never tilt the outboard motor while the engine is running.
Operation 39 W ARNING EWM00260 After til ting the outboard motor, be sure t o support it with the tilt support knob or tilt support lever. Otherwise the outboard mo- tor could fall back down suddenly if oil in the power trim and tilt unit loses pressure.

Maintenance 44 ● Store the outboard motor in a dry, well- ventilated place, not in direct sunlight. EMU28301 Procedure EMU30740 Flushing with the flushing attachment 1. Wash the outboard motor body using fresh water. For further informatio n, see page 47.
Maintenance 45 6. Run the engine at a fast idle for a few minutes in neutra l position while supply- ing fresh water. 7. Just prior to turning off the en gine, quickly spr ay “ Yamaha Stor-Rite Engine Fogging Oil ” (Part No. LUB-STR RT-12-00) alter- nately into the intake s ilencer or the fog- ging hole of the silenc er cover, if equipped.
Maintenance 46 Batteries vary among m anufacturers. There- fore the following procedures may not always apply. Consult your battery manufacturer ’ s in - structions. Procedure 1. Disconnect a nd remove the battery from the boat. Always disconnect the black negative cable first to prevent the risk of shorting.
Maintenance 47 cause serious overheating. Be sure the connector is tightened securely on the fit- ting after flushing the engin e. NOTE: ● When flushing the engine with the boat in the water, tilting up the outboard motor until it is completely out of the water will achieve better results.

A damaged insulator could allow exter nal sparks, which could lead to explosion or fire.
Maintenance 51 The spark plug is an important engine compo- nent and is easy to inspect. The con dition of the spark plug can indicate something about the condition of the engine. For example, if the center electrode p orcelain is very w hite, this could indicate an inta ke air leak or carburetion problem in that cyl inder.

Maintenance 53 3. Loosen the bolt that retain s the lock tab, and remove the lo ck tab. 4. Loosen the bolt that secures the fuel fil ter in p lace. 5. Loosen the ring nut of the filter cup. 6. Remove the filter c up, catching any spilled fuel in a container.
Maintenance 54 3. Remove the oi l filler cap. Add the correct amount of oil through the filler ho le, and install the filler cap. CAUTION: ECM00970 ● Do not overfill the oil, and be sure the outboard motor is upright ( not tilted) when checking and changing the engine oil.
Maintenance 55 Draining the oil by rem oving the oil drain screw 1. Remove the four bolts to remove the apron from the starboard side. 2. Tilt the outboard motor 5 – 10 degrees up, then turn it entirely to the starboard side until the drain screw is di rectly below.
Maintenance 56 NOTE: If any leaks are found, consult your Yamaha dealer. EMU29153 Checking power trim a nd tilt system W ARNING EWM00430 ● Never get under the lower unit while it is tilted, even when the tilt support lever is locked. Severe injury could occur if the outboard motor accidentally falls.
Maintenance 57 ● Do not use your hand to hold the propel- ler when loosening or tightening the propeller nut. Put a wood block between the anti-cavitation plate and the propel- ler to prevent the propeller from turning. Checkpoints ● Check each of the propeller blades for wear, erosion from cav itation or ventilation, or other damage.
Maintenance 58 CAUTION: ECM00340 ● Be sure to install the thrust washer be- fore installing the propeller, otherwise the lower case and propeller boss could be damaged. ● Be sure to use a new cotter pin and bend the ends over securely. Otherwise the propeller could come off during opera- tion and be lost.
Maintenance 59 CAUTION: ECM00710 Inspect the used oil after it has been drained. If the oil is milky, water is getting into the gear case which can cause gear damage. Consult a Yamaha dealer for re- pair of the lower unit seals. N O TE: For disposal of us ed oil consult y our Yamaha dealer.
Maintenance 60 EMU29320 Chec king b atte ry (for el ectri c star t models) W ARNING EWM00330 Battery electrolytic fluid is dangerous; it contains sulfuric acid and therefore is poi- sonous and highly caustic.
Maintenance 61 CAUTION: ECM01121 ● Make sure the main switch (on applica- ble models) is “” (off) before working on the battery. ● Reversal of the battery cables will dam- age the electrical parts. ● Connect the red battery cable first when installing the battery and disconnect the black battery ca ble first when removing it.
Maintenance 62 EMU29400 Coating the boat bottom A clean hull improves boat performance. The boat bottom should be kept as clean of marine growth as possible. If nece ssary, the boat bot- tom can be c oated with an anti-foulin g paint approved for your area to inhibit marine growth.
