1 Congratulations! Thank y ou for pur chasing the Y amaha DD-50. The DD-50 has been developed to act and play like a drum set b ut with greater ease. Before y ou use the instru- ment, we recommend y ou to read through this manual.

6 Playing the Demo Song 1 T urn on the power T urn the [POWER] switch ON. T o giv e you idea of the DD-50 ’ s possibilities, it comes with a demonstration song. T o playbac k the demo song: POWER OFF ON Press the [DEMO] button, the demo song will start playback.
7 Play the Pads/Pedals Strike the pad with the supplied drum sticks to pla y the dr um v oices. Dr um Kit “ 00 ” is auto- matically chosen whene ver the pow er is tur ned on (see the “ Dr um Kit List ” page 24). Striking the pads with different f orce results in relatively loud or soft sounds accordingly .
8 Assigning a Drum Kit to the Pads and Pedals Play the Pads/Pedals The DD-50 allows you to choose from 20 different Drum Kits (00-19 : see the “Drum Kit List” page 24) quickly and easily . 20 of the kits have preset voice combinations that will be set to the pads and pedals when the kit is selected.
9 Play the Pads/Pedals 3 Select a V oice Number Y ou can select the voice by repeatedly striking the pad, repeatedly pressing the pedal (while listening to the voice) or by turning the DIAL . ● Striking the pad or pressing the pedal to select a voice .
10 Playing a SONG The DD-50 f eatures 100 different songs that can be used to pro vide accompaniment (see the “ Song List ” page 26). Select one of the songs and ha ve a listen.
11 2 Select ON or OFF Press the [BACKING] button and the current ON/OFF setting will appear in the display . T urn the DIAL to the right (clockwise) to activate the Auto Kit Select (on). T urn to the left (counter-clockwise) to deactivate the Auto Kit Select (oF).
12 Play along with a SONG TRACK ON/OFF Use the pads and pedals to pla y along with a song accompaniment. The DD-50’ s song accompaniment consists of 4 tracks; Drum 1/2, Bass, and Backing tracks. • The DD-50 can play a total of 28 notes sim ultaneously .
13 BREAK 1 During song pla yback, press the BREAK/T AP ST AR T button W ith the BREAK function, you can liven up songs by adding your own solos or fills, whenever you want. Striking a pad while in the BREAK mode, the song’ s accompaniment will be muted until the end of the measure you have finished your fill or solo in.
14 A-B REPEAT 1 T o set the “ A ” (star t repeat) point 3 Stop the A-B REPEA T mode When the song playback has reached the start of the section you want to practice, press the [A-B REPEA T] button and the “A” repeat point is set. An “A” will appear in the display .
15 Try Recording Playback The DD-50 ’ s Custom Song f eature (song number “ CU ” ) allo ws you to record and pla yback one or iginal song (600 notes appro ximately). The recorded Custom Song (song number “CU”) can be played back in the same manner as any song (song numbers “00”-”99”).
16 Using the MIDI/Utility Mode The MIDI IN and MIDI OUT ter minals , located on the DD-50 ’ s r ight side panel, off er broad- ened musical possibilities through use of MIDI. But, what is MIDI? What can you do with MIDI? How can y ou use MIDI with the DD-50? Here are a fe w examples .
17 Enter/Exit the MIDI/Utility Mode T o enter the MIDI mode, press the [ST ART/ST OP] and [DEMO] buttons simultaneously , an “ mm ” will appear in the display to indicate the MIDI mode. Setting the Clock Connecting the DD-50, by MIDI cable, to an external MIDI device, such as a sequencer , time based functions (song playback, etc.
18 Local ON/OFF Setting the Local ON/OFF determines whether or not the internal voices respond to the notes you play on the DD-50’ s pads. Setting this to OFF disconnects the DD-50’ s pads from the voices. How- ever , data produced by the DD-50 is transmitted via the MIDI OUT terminal.
19 Using the MIDI/Utility Mode ■ Setting the MIDI Transmit Channel . Drum (Song) Song performance data is transmitted on channel 9. Y ou can change this transmit channel to chan- nel 10 by using the procedure below: > First enter the MIDI/Utility mode by pressing both the [ST AR T/ ST OP] and [DEMO] buttons simultaneously .
20 Setting the MIDI Note Number Using the MIDI/Utility Mode After entering the MIDI/Utility mode, press the [KIT ASSIGN] button, the MIDI note number currently assigned to Pad 1 will appear in the display .
21 I n i t i a l i z e The DD-50 ’ s Custom Song, Custom Kit, and P anel Setting data are bac ked up so long as power is supplied to the DD-50 b y means of batteries or an AC adaptor . Initialize is the term which ref ers to this data being restored to its or iginal factor y settings .
22 In many cases , problems or malfunctions that occur during use can be remedied easily . Please check the f ollowing list bef ore deciding that y our DD-50 is damaged. If the suggested remedy is ineff ective, tak e the DD-50 to an authorized Y amaha dealer f or proper diagnosis and repair .

30 Adjusting the Pad’s Sensitivity The factory default setting for pad sensitivity should provide you with trouble-free use. However , it is possible to adjust the pad’ s sensitivity (0-3, factory default = 2) if you are experiencing one of the problems shown below .
