INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL FUNCTIONS T o reset the periodic maintenance and lu- brication indicator: 1. T urn the key to “ B ” (OFF). 2. Push the “ RESET ” button and hold it down while turning the key to “ I ” (ON). Clock mode NOTE: The clock can only be set while the speedometer unit is in the odometer mode.
INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL FUNCTIONS NOTE: The clock can only be set when the motor- cycle is stopped. The clock does not auto- matically adjust for Daylight Saving T ime. Therefore, when the time changes from Standard T ime to Daylight Saving T ime (and vice versa), the clock must be set manually .

Peri- odic inspection, adjustment and lubrication will keep your vehicle in the safest and most efficient condition possible. The most important points of inspection, adjustment, and lubrication are explained on the fol- lowing pages.

EAU00462 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REP AIR T o install a spark plug 1. Measure the spark plug gap with a wire thickness gauge and, if neces- sary , adjust the gap to specification. 2. Clean the surface of the spark plug gasket and its mating surface, and then wipe off any grime from the spark plug threads.
EAU00462 1. Engine oil filler cap PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REP AIR 1 NOTE: Make sure that the motorcycle is posi- tioned straight up when checking the oil level. A slight tilt to the side can result in a false reading. 2. Start the engine, warm it up for sever- al minutes, and then turn it off.
EAU00462 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REP AIR EC000072 • In order to prevent clutch slippage (since the engine oil also lubri- cates the clutch), do not mix any chemical additives with the oil or use oils of a higher grade than “CD”. In addition, do not use oils labeled "ENERGY CONSER VING II" or higher .

NOTE: • The final gear oil level must be checked on a cold engine. • Make sure that the motorcycle is posi- tioned straight up when checking the oil level.

EAUB0008 Cleaning the air filter element The air filter element should be cleaned at the intervals specified in the periodic main- tenance and lubrication chart.
PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REP AIR 2 3 1 5. Remove the air filter case cover by removing the screws. 6. Pull the air filter element out. 7. Lightly tap the air filter element to re- move most of the dust and dirt, and then blow the remaining dirt out with compressed air as shown.

Therefore, most carburetor ad- justments should be left to a Y amaha deal- er , who has the necessary professional knowledge and experience.

Remove the wheel axle together with the spacers. 4. Pull the wheel to the right to separate it from the final gear case, and then remove it.

Any problem in the fuel, compres- sion, or ignition systems, for example, can cause poor starting and loss of power .

MOT ORCYCLE CARE AND STORAGE Care While the open design of a motorcycle re- veals the attractiveness of the technology , it also makes it more vulnerable. Rust and corrosion can develop even if high-quality components are used. A rusty exhaust pipe may go unnoticed on a car , however , it detracts from the overall appearance of a motorcycle.
MOT ORCYCLE CARE AND STORAGE • Do not use any harsh chemical products on plastic parts. Be sure to avoid using cloths or sponges which have been in contact with strong or abrasive cleaning prod- ucts, solvent or thinner , fuel (gaso- line), rust removers or inhibitors, brake fluid, antifreeze or elec- trolyte.
MOT ORCYCLE CARE AND STORAGE After cleaning 1. Dry the motorcycle with a chamois or an absorbing cloth. 2. Use a chrome polish to shine chrome, aluminum and stainless-steel parts, including the exhaust system. (Even the thermally induced discoloring of stainless-steel exhaust systems can be removed through polishing).
MOT ORCYCLE CARE AND STORAGE Storage Short-term Always store your motorcycle in a cool, dry place and, if necessary , protect it against dust with a porous cover . ECA00014 • Storing the motorcycle in a poorly ventilated room or covering it with a tarp, while it is still wet, will allow water and humidity to seep in and cause rust.
MOT ORCYCLE CARE AND STORAGE 6. Lubricate all control cables and the pivoting points of all levers and ped- als as well as of the sidestand/center- stand. 7. Check and, if necessary , correct the tire air pressure, and then lift the mo- torcycle so that both of its wheels are off the ground.
