Chapter 1: How to Use this M anual The TriCoder is an extremely versatile bar code reader. It functions as both a portable data co llection device as well as a fixed on -line bar code reader. Although the T riCoder can per form complex d ata collectio n functio ns, it's true value is in its simplicity.
Chapter 2: T riCoder Q uic ks tar t As powerful as t he TriCod er is, its basic o peration is quite simple. Man y peo ple can use P rogram #0 or P rogram # 1 to satisfy their data collection needs. This C hapter helps you get started quickly usi ng Program #0 or Program #1.
Program #0 Quickstart The default data collection pro gram, Progra m #0, is a simple progra m, repe ated ly pro mpting the o perator for data entr y of the sa me type. This Tr iCoder program works well for a simple inventory where ea ch item is sca nned.
Collecting Data The second step involves collectin g data in the T riCoder. T his is a good time to practice scannin g. I f you are not familiar with scanning bar codes , see Appendix B: H ow to scan a bar code for details and su ggestions. If you don‟t intend on using bar co des later, you can just enter the same data from the keypad.
Uploading Data Once you have co llected your data in P rogram # 0, uploading that data to the co mputer is the final step. For the tutorial , we assu me that you ha ve succe ssfully established communicatio n betwee n the computer and the T riCoder.
Program #1 Quickstart Sample Progra m #1 pro mpts the operator for " Item " and then " Quantity ". What makes this pro gram different from program # 0 (other tha n the additional " Quantity " prompt) is that Sample Pro gram #1 is editable.
Reviewing and Ed iting Data During o r after collecting data, it is possible to review and edit the data while it is still in the T riCoder. You can also delete d ata entirely. Data Review Mode is a ha ndy tool – esp ecially if you know y o u‟ve made a mistake a nd want to correct it before you u p load your data.
You can use the STATUS key at any ti me during data collection to check t he a mount o f memory you have left as well as the battery levels: mm/dd/yy hh:mm:ss BATTERY: ------ xx% xxxK BYT ES FREE I.
Uploading Data Once you have collected your data in P rogram #1, uploading that data to the co mputer is the final step. For the tu torial, we a ssume that you ha ve s uccessfully established co mmunication bet ween the co mputer and the T riCoder.
Chapter 3: Non P ortab le Mode NON PORTABL E mode allows t he user to tra nsmit data directl y from the TriCoder to the host co mpu ter i mmediately without savi ng the data in the T riCoder memory. Once data is e ntered via scanning a bar code or using the keypad, it is transmitted i mmedia tel y by the Tr iCoder to the host.
If you are usin g Windo ws® 7, Vista, XP , 2 000, ME, or 98 SE and you wish to upload your files directl y into your appli cation th rough the keyboard, you must choos e 2 – PC OR M AC USB HIS KEYBOARD .

Program Name Press the number of the pro gram you wish to create or edit; 1 , 2 , or 3 . For this example we w ill key in 1 . T he TriCoder then displays: PROGRAM #1 PROGRAM #1 NAME ---------------.
Programming To ed it Program #1 press the 2 key. T his will enter you i nto the editing section and sho w you pr ogramming pro mpts and allow you to edit each section of the pro mpt on one scr een. The te xt belo w i s an exa mple of what you s ee o n the T riCoder screen when crea ting a program.
Entry Type The first li ne on the progra m screen is the ENTRY TYPE prompt. This prompt deter mines what type of data is entered for this statement. This is the most important pr ompt as it determines exac tly what happen s at this step in the p rogram.
Go to state m ent 34 if a 5 is keyed/scanned Go to state m ent 02 if anything else is keyed/ scanned The ST MT TO BRANCH field would look like this: ENTRY TYPE --------------------------- B PROMPT TEXT: TRANSACTION? STATEMENT TO BRANCH R18534*02_ Question A question statement creates a program pro mpt that the us er answers YES o r NO to .
The Time Sta mp state ment type records only the time in formation to memory in the HHMM format. Just as with t he Date and Time Stamp statement, using DIS in the DATA ID field will dis play the time information o n the T riCoder screen when the statement is executed.
None The None statement entry type is used as a “dummy” statement, recording no data an d transmitting only the Upload prefix and suffix . It is typically used as a destinatio n for a branch statement , allowing you to rec ord wh at a ction the operator took w it hout reco rding any data.
! (space) UF (space) myfile.fmtCRLF data1 CRLF data2 CRLF data3 CR a nd LF are scanned from the F ull ASCII Menu and the filename must e nd with " .fmt". No CRLF is r equired after the last data item. The Tr iCoder will do it for you. Here is a progra m example using ref er -backs Stmnt # Type Prompt Min.
Then the user would see the P rompt SCAN ITEM NO: and then the “Ite m Descriptio n”, “Price” and “Quantity On Hand” from the Table as sho wn b elow: SCAN ITEM NO: 69 -1894ES-1 Honey w ell VisionPRO TH8000 The rmostat $125.
for the prompt is 123 4, then the next time the PROMPT text is displayed, it w o uld display as follo ws : ENTER ITEM NO. 1234 _ To accept 123 4 as the actual data (instead of enterin g new d ata), simply press the ENT ER key on the TriCoder.

you have a progra m that prompts for (1 )BLDG., then (2)AISLE, then (3)ITE M, then (4)QUANTIT Y, w it h a loop that goes b ack to IT EM after QUANT ITY. T o b reak o ut of the loop at ITEM and go back to B LDG, use 01 in the NO/END STMT for ITE M. To break out of t he loop at QUANTITY and go to AISLE, use 02 in the NO/END STMT for QUANTITY.
As an example, let‟s say you wanted to attach an aisle nu mber as a prefix to every item nu mber you e ntered. Assuming the aisle number is state ment # 02, entering }02 in the Upload Prefix of the ite m number state ment would attach t he aisle number to ever y item number.
For example, if statement #0 1 has a Maximu m Data Len gth of 10 and you sca n the nu mber 12345, the follo wing Uploa d Prefix for statement #1 w o uld produce d ata of 0000012345.
Finishing and che c king your pr ogram When you have finished entering your progra m, press the ke y to have the Tr iCoder check your pro gram for errors. If you have refer enced a statement n umber that doesn‟t exist or has n‟t been defined prop erly, you will see the message: INVALID STMT .
Reviewing and M odifying programs You can rev iew or modify a program at a ny time. If you have data collected for that program, the o nly portions you can r evie w or modify ar e the Prefix and Suffix . This is a safeguard to make sure you do not d amage data alread y collected before it is upload ed.
