01 Safety 12 Safety in the passenger compar tment 01 Always use seatbelts Heavy brak ing can have ser ious conse- quences if the seatbelts are no t used. Ensure that all passengers use their seatbelts. It is important that the se atbelt lies against the body so it can pr ovide maximu m protec- tion.
01 Safety 13 Safety in the passenger compar tm ent 01 Seatbelts and pr egnancy The seatbelt should always be worn during pregnancy. But it is cr ucial that it be worn in the correct way. The diago nal section should wrap over the shoulder then be routed be- tween the breasts and to the side of the a b- domen.

01 Safety 17 Safety in the passenger compar tm ent 01 gas. To cushion the impa ct, the airbag de- flates when compre ssed. When this occurs, smoke escapes in to the car. This is co m- pletely normal. The e ntire process, including inflation and deflation of the airbag, oc curs within tenths of a second.
01 Safety 18 Safety in the passenger compar tment 01 Switc h position PACOS (Passenger Airbag Cut Off Switch) The airbag (SRS) is ac tivated. With the switch in this position, persons tall er than 140 cm can sit in th e front passenger seat, but never children in a c hild seat or on a booster cushion.

With one ge ntle push the re- mote control key is captured into the correct position.

03 Your driving environment 61 Seats 03 Prepar ations The seats can be adjusted for a certain time after unlocking the door with the remote con- trol key without the key in the ignitio n switch. Seat adjustment is norm ally made when the ignition is on and ca n always be made when the engine is running.
03 Your driving environment 62 Seats 03 Emergency stop If the seat accidentall y begins to move, press one of the buttons to stop the seat. Restarting to reach the se at position stored in the key memor y is performed by pressing the unlock button on the remote co ntrol key.

Follow th e shifting pattern indicated. For the best possible fu el economy, use the highest gear possible as often as possible .
03 Your driving environment 85 Gearbo x es 03 Reverse ( R ) The car must be statio nary when position R is selected. Neutral position ( N ) No gear is engag ed and the engine can be started. Apply the parking brake if the car is stationary with the gear selector in position N .

To be able to move the gear selector fro m N to another gear posi tion, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition must be in position II , see page 81.
