INST ALLIN G 4 Befor e choosing a location for y our new phone, read the INSTALLATION CONSIDER A TIONS included in the PREC A UTIONS AND IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS brochure. Here ar e some important guidelines you should consider: l The location should be close to both a phone jack and a continuous pow er outlet.
5 1 . Snap the desktop/wall mount adapter into the top of the base as shown. 2. Plug the A C adapter cord into the 1 0V DC input jack on the back of the base. 3. W rap the A C adapter cord around the strain r elief notch. 4. Plug the A C adapter into a standard 1 20V AC w all outlet.
DO NOT use an outlet controlled by a wall switch. t Standard wall plate mounting This phone can be mounted on any standar d telephone wall plate. 1 . Snap the desktop/wall mount adapter into the bottom of the base as shown. 2. Plug the A C adapter into the base.
6. Align the mounting slots on the base with the mounting posts on the wall. Push in and do wn until the phone is firmly seated. 7 . On the base, pull the handset retainer out of the slot. Rotate clockwise 1 80°. 8. Flip the retainer from fr ont to back.
1 . Insert two mounting screws (with the appropriate anchoring device) into the w all 3- 1 5/1 6 inches apart. Allow about 3/1 6 of an inch between the w all and screw heads for mounting the phone. 2. Snap the desktop/wall mount adapter into the bottom of the base as shown.
9 6. Align the mounting slots on the base with the mounting screws on the wall. Push in and do wn until the phone is firmly seated. 7 . On the base, pull the handset retainer out of the slot. Rotate clockwise 1 80°. 8. Flip the retainer from fr ont to back.
1 . Press the battery cover r elease. Slide cov er of f. 2. Install the nick el-cadmium batter y with the label down. 3. Slide the battery cover f or w ard until it snaps into place. INST ALLING THE HANDSET BA TTERY P A C K 10 Use only Uniden Battery (model BT-990) supplied with your phone.
11 t Initial batter y c harging Befor e connecting your phone f or the first time, charge the recharg eable battery pack for 1 5-20 hours without interr uption.
Most phone systems use tone dialing. Check with your local phone company if y ou’re not sure whether y our system is tone or pulse. 12 t Low batter y indicator When the battery pack is ver y lo w and needs to be charged, the phone is pr ogrammed to eliminate some functions to save po wer .
13 t Handset ringer volume Remo ve the handset fr om the base. Press the vo l s or t k ey on the handset to set the handset ringer v olume. There are tw o ringer v olume settings; high and low . T o select the high volume setting, press v ol s . The follo wing screen displays: T o select the low volume setting, press vo l t .
t T o attach the beltclip 1 . Remo ve the slot co ver . 2. Insert the beltclip into the empty slot and press do wn until it clicks. t T o remove the beltclip 1 . Pull back on the release tab and lift the beltclip up. 2. Replace the slot co ver . Y ou can store either the beltclip or slot cov er in the bottom of the base.
Y our phone may be used with an optional headset, the Uniden HS9 1 0. T o use this featur e, simply plug the headset plug into the headset jack. Y our phone is ready f or hands-free conv ersation. T o prevent other parties from making unauthorized calls on y our phone line, a digital code was added to the EXS 9650.

17 When you hav e connected power and a telephone line to y our EXS 9650, the phone is in “ Standby mode , ” ready to receiv e and mak e calls. F or clarity , the instr uctions in this Owner’s Manual designates line 1 unless the procedure r equires using line 2.
18 1 . Press line 1. 2. Dial the number on the k eypad or use the memory feature. (See USING MEMORY DIALIN G, page 34.) 3. When you finish the call, press l ine 1 to hang up. t Off-Hook Dialing 1 . Pick up the handset. 2. Press line 1 . 3. Dial the number on the k eypad, or use one of the memory features.
If you hav e Call W aiting service and a call waiting tone sounds, pr ess flash to accept the call. After a shor t pause y ou will hear the new caller . T o return to the original caller , press flash a gain. The flash function on the base and handset are independent of each other .
Use either the k eypad on the handset or the keypad on the base. 1 . T o place line 1 on hold at the base, press hold . The line 1 LED turns from green to r ed. 2. T o place line 1 on hold at the handset, press hold/p . The follo wing screen appears: 3.
21 T o locate the handset when it is of f the base, press page/ i nt’com on the base. The handset beeps for 60 seconds. The follo wing screen appears: Press int’com on the handset to connect to the base. Press int’com again on either the handset or the base to return to standby .
22 The handset and the base can be used on separate telephone lines at the same time. F or example, if the handset is on a call with line 1 , you can mak e, or receive calls, at the base on line 2 . The line 1 LED on the base blinks green to indicate line 1 is In Use at the handset.
23 This featur e lets you add a third party to your conv ersation from either the handset or the base. F or example, to add a party to the current call on line 1 at the base: 1 . Press hold to place the caller on hold. The line 1 LED turns from green to red.
24 A fourth person, at either the handset or the base, may be added to a confer ence call. F or example, to add a fourth party at the handset to an ongoing confer ence call at the base: 1 . Press hold . The line 1 and line 2 LEDs turn red. 2. Press page/int’com to contact the handset.
25 t P aging from the Base to the Handset 1 . Press page/int’com on the base. The handset beeps. (If no answer , press page/int’com again to disconnect.) 2. Press int’com on the handset to answer the pag e. 3. T o turn of f the inter com, press page/int’com on the base or int’com on the handset.
t From Handset to Base 1 . T o transfer a call from the handset to the base, press hold/p . The line 1 LED turns red. 2. On the handset, pr ess int’com. The follo wing screen appears: The status LED flashes. 3. Answer at the base b y pressing page/int’com .
27 4. On the handset, press line 1 to talk. If no one is available to take the call at the handset, return to the caller by pressing line 1 or page/int’com on the base ,to take a message or com plete the call. As you begin to mo ve too far from the base, y ou f irst hear a clicking sound.
Y our EXS 9650 stores up to 1 0 name/numbers in the handset plus 1 0 numbers in the base. Memory locations are shared by both lines. t On the Handset 1 . Remo ve the handset fr om the base. 2. Press and hold memory for two seconds. The follo wing screen appears: 3.
7 . Enter the phone number with the number k eypad (direct entry). Or scroll through numbers with the s and t k eys. Use the s and t k eys to enter symbols, such as dashes. Use the < and > keys to position the cursor . 8. When you hav e f inished entering a name/number , press select .
30 T o edit a number you have stor ed in the handset: 1 . Remo ve the handset fr om the base. 2. Press and hold memory f or two seconds. The display shows the Memory Store screen and an y saved name/numbers. 3. Use the s and t k eys or number k eypad to select the memor y location y ou would lik e to edit.
7 . Press select . The follo wing screen appears: A cursor flashes indicating that the display is ready f or the number to be edited. 8. Enter the phone number with the number k eypad (direct entry) or with the s and t k eys. Use the s and t keys to enter symbols.
After erasing a number , you may add a new address to memory . t From the Handset 1 . Remo ve the handset fr om the base. 2. Press and hold memory for two seconds. The handset shows the Memory Store scr een with saved name/numbers displayed. 3. Use the s and t keys, or number k eypad, to select the memor y location y ou would lik e to delete.
8. Press select . There is confirmation tone. The follo wing screen appears: 9. The display then returns to the Memory Store screen. Y ou may select another number to delete (return to step 3) or you may pr ess memory to return to standb y . t From the Base 1 .
F ollow the steps belo w to dial a number using a programmed memory location: t From the Handset 1 . Press memory . The handset displays your pr ogrammed memory locations. 2. Use the s and t keys to select the memory location you would lik e to dial. Or , you may enter the memory location number from the k eypad.
t At the Base 1 . Press line 1 . The line 1 LED lights. 2. Press memory . Enter the memory location number (0-9), to dial the number . 35 exs9650 User’s Manual.
