This scanner has been designed to prev ent the reception of cellular telephone transmissions and the decoding of scrambled transmissions . This is done to comply with the legal requir ement that scanners be manufactured so they are not easy to modify to pick up these transmissions.

So whenever you enc ounter a newly activated local frequency for any service category, y ou can add it to the bank for that ca tegory. 17 Helpful Hints If strong interference or electrical noise is received , relocate the scanner or its antenna awa y from the sourc e. If you are operating the scanner in a fringe ar ea or need to improv e reception, use an optional ant enna designed for multi-band cover age.
18 Plug one end of the Vehicle P ower Adapter in to the vehicle ’ s accessory power jack and the other end into the DC 13.8V jack on the back of the scanner .
19 Note: If there are scr ews alr eady holding the dashb oard, you ma y be able to use the same screw holes to moun t the brack et. Drill the necessary holes and secure the mounting bracket in place using the screws pr ovided. CA UTION: Do not drill into air bags.
20 Connect the RED wire of the DC pow er cord to the ac cessory contact in your vehicle ’ s +13.8 VDC fuse box. Connect the BLACK wire of the DC po wer cor d to the negative side of the vehicle (usually the chassis).
21 KEY PURPOSE HOLD Pr ess this key to stop scanning or searching and to remain on the curren t frequency . HOLD displays on the screen. Pr ess HOLD a second time to resume scanning. UP and DOWN Pr ess these direc tional keys to: Manually search up or down for frequencies while in Hold mode.
22 KEY PURPOSE PD/FD/EMG Pr ess this key to scan the P olice, F ire, and Emergency Ser vices bands. Pr essing this key cycles through the frequencies in the following or der: P olice/F ire/Emergency S.
23 KEY PURPOSE AIR/MRN Pr ess this key to scan the Air and Marine bands. P ressing this key cycles through the frequencies in the follo wing order: Air/MRN - both activated Air only (turn o Marine bank) Marine only (turn o Air bank) None active (turn o both Air and Marine banks) NO TE: The AIR and MRN banks share 100 PRIV A TE channels.
24 KEY PURPOSE CLOS E C A LL Pr ess this key to begin monitoring f or strong , nearby signals. P ressing this key c ycles through the frequencies in the f ollowing order: Close Call ® Priority - CC checks for Close Call hits ev ery 2 seconds while monitoring other frequencies.
25 KEY PURPOSE WX Pr ess this key to activate the Weather frequencies (7 NOAA/3 C anada Marine). No other channels are scanned while the WX bank is activated. CB Pr ess this key to monitor 40 prog rammed CB channels. SEARCH Pr ess the SEARCH key to search f or ac tive frequencies within a selected band range.
26 KEY PURPOSE PROG Pr ess this key to initiate and c omplete programming a channel or fr equency (further detail is provided in a later section). Note: If you pr ess a non- programmable bank k ey (WX, or CB), ”Error” will be displayed; pr ess a programmable bank k ey .
27 ITEM PURPOSE L CD The Liquid Crystal Display (L CD) shows the current channel or its frequency . I t also displays mode , status, and bank indicat ors. It utilizes a 7-segment L CD pattern for character display . (Go to “Screens” on page 36 for more details .
28 ITEM PURPOSE EXT SP External Speakers. Inser t optional external speaker plug here. DC 13.8V P ower C onnection. Connect the specied AC Adapter or DC pow er cord here. U S I N G Y O U R B C355 C S C AN N E R SE T U P Adjusting Squelch T o Adjust Squelch - T urn SQ completely counter clockwise.
29 T o Adjust Squelch - T urn SQ clock wise slowly until the sound disappears. This is the threshold point at which the incoming signal is just slightly stronger than the noise will open the squelch. 2. Adjust the volume t o a comfortable listening level.
30 The Bank label/icon f or the scanned frequency ashes while that bank is scanned. When an active frequency is found, the scanner stops on that frequency and the Bank label/icon remains steady . When transmission ends, the scanner pauses 2 sec onds for a new transmission.
31 SPECIAL NO TES FOR SCANNING PD/FD/EMG AND AIR/MRN BANKS T wo keys are home to multiple banks . The PD/FD/EMG key manages the P olice and F ire/Emergency Ser vices banks and the AIR/MRN key manages the Air and Marine banks.
32 NO TE: The AIR and MRN banks share 100 PRIV A TE channels. These user-programmed channels are scanned after preprogr ammed channels. 33 If Y ou W ant to do This - Here ’ s Ho w - Stop scanning Pr ess HOLD . The scanner stays on the displayed channel until scanning is resumed. The bank’ s screen label remains steady and does not ash.
34 If Y ou W ant to do This - Here ’ s Ho w - Resume scanning (Con t.) Any bank key - If you press a di erent bank key , you will star t scanning in that new bank and the bank label will resume ashing.
35 Searching Band Tips If Y ou W ant to Do This - Here ’ s Ho w - Begin searching Pr ess the BAND key . The screen displays the last known searched band and then begins searching f or an active frequency in that band.

38 Privat e Bank Pr ogram F requencies into Pr ogrammable Banks. Pr ogram L ock L OCK OUT CHANNELS / FREQUENCIES Sometimes the scanner may stop on a particular channel or frequency because of noise or other unwanted transmissions . T his featur e lets you lock out channels and frequencies y ou don ’t want to scan.
39 Permanent L ock Out Pr essing L/O twice permanently locks out the current frequency or channel. The scanner displays “ L/O ” for that frequency or channel and continues scanning . “ L/O ” frequencies/channels can be manually restor ed; the procedur e is provides in this section.
40 in one of these banks, pressing that bank key will make the scanner emit an error tone and the scanner will not scan. Note: Y ou cannot lock out any frequencies in the WX bank. 42 If Y ou W ant to Do This - Here ’ s Ho w - Restoring a Single Locked-Out Channel or F requency (Example: Channel 12 of the Privat e bank is locked out.) Pr ess the appropriate bank key ( PRIV A TE, PD/FD/EMG or AIR/ MRN) to start scanning the bank that has the channel or frequency you want to unlock.
43 If Y ou W ant to Do This - Here ’ s Ho w - Restoring a Single Locked-Out Channel (Con t.) “ L/O ” disappears to indicate that Channel 12 is now unlocked and restor ed for scanning . Note: F or the fac tor y preprogrammed channels , the earliest channel will be unlocked when y ou lock out more than 100 channels.
44 If Y ou W ant to Do This - Here ’ s Ho w - Restoring All P ermanently Locked Out Channels/ F requencies (C ont.) Pr ess and hold L/O for more than 2.5 seconds until you hear two beeps. All locked out channels/ frequencies in that bank are now unlocked and restor ed for scanning.
45 Close Call O Pr essing and holding the key acativates Close Call Only mode. Close Call Priority Repeatedly press until the Close Call P riority icon displays . The scanner checks every 2 second for a nearby transmission. Y ou may hear a slight break in audio during this time .

51 W eather frequencies broadcast continuously , and the scanner will not change to other frequencies. Programming Frequencies and Channels Up to 100 frequencies (1 fr equency per channel) can be prog.
52 Progr amming a Channel The follo wing steps detail how to pr ogram a fr equency into a channel for a specic bank when the frequency was found while scanning or searching . In this example, the frequency was found while scanning the P olice bank.

58 TROUBLESHOO TING GUIDE PROBLEM SOL UTION Scanner won ’t work T r y one of these options: Check the connections at both ends of the AC adapter . T urn on the wall switch of your room. Y ou c ould be using an outlet controlled by the wall switch. Mov e the AC adapter to another wall outlet.
59 PROBLEM SOL UTION Improper Reception T r y one of these options: Check the antenna and its connection. Move the scanner . Y ou ma y be in a fringe area. This may requir e an optional multi-band antenna. Check with your dealer or local electronics store.
60 PROBLEM SOL UTION Scan won ’t stop Try one of these options: Check and adjust Squelch Check the antenna connection. Check to see if all channels are locked out. It is possible that none of the programmed fr equencies are active at the time. T r y the band search.
