4 EN Maintenance CLEANING THE UNIT Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use solutions containing alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasives . CLEANING DISCS If a disc becomes dir ty , clean it with a cleaning cloth. Wipe the disc from the centre out.

7 EN Features The follo wing features are a vailab le with this unit. Recording This unit allows you to record on the HDD , a D VD- RW/+R W (rewritable) and a D VD-R/+R (one-time write). Also , this unit allows you to record to a videotape. Y ou can choose either one for y our conv enience.
8 EN Quick searc h: [ E Pages 82 - 83] Y ou can easily find the par t you want to w atch using the Index or Time search functions. An inde x mark will be assigned at the beginning of each recording you make . For Time search function, y ou can go to a specific point on a tape by entering the exact amount of time you want to skip .

15 EN Switching HDD / DVD / VCR mode Because this unit is a combination of HDD , D VD and VCR recorder , you must select which component you want to operate first. Press [HDD] on the remote control or the front panel. (V er ify that the HDD indicator is lit in blue.
16 EN Press [DISPLA Y] while the On-Screen Display is display ed to display the f ollowing inf orm ation. 1 Indicates the resolution of the HDMI output im age. 2 Indicates the HDMI video format. 3 Indicates the HDMI audio format. • “- - -” will be display ed, when it does not have an y information.
17 EN 7 CD Playbac k Mode: T o set up the CD pla yback setting. • “CD Playbac k Mode” is av ailable only when an audio CD , a video CD , a C D-R W/-R with MP3 / JPEG / DivX ® files is inser ted into the unit. 1 Playbac k: T o set up the unit to pla y discs as you prefer .

19 EN Connections Connecting to a TV Connect the unit to a TV after considering the capabilities of your e xisting equipment. Before installation, unplug your TV and this unit. 1 Connect the a ntenna or cab le to the ANTENNA IN jack of this unit. 2 Connect the ANTENNA OUT jac k of this unit to the Aerial ja ck of y our TV .
20 EN Connecting to a TV with an HDMI Compatible Port [HDMI CONNECTION] A simple 1-cable connection with a de vice having an HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) connector allows digital transf er of both digital video sign als and multi-channel audio signals.
21 EN Note • When you record a TV programme from a Satellite Box, y ou must connect a Scar t cable to A V2 (DECODER). (See page 37.) • When A V2 is connected, the signal from the A V 2 will be output automatically . If you want to monitor the signal from other input, you must press [DISPLA Y] first.
22 EN Initial Setting When you turn on this unit for the first time, y ou need to follo w these steps. 1 Press [ B ON ST ANDBY]. 2 T urn the TV on. Select the input to which the unit is connected. “Initial Setting” will automatically appear . 3 Select y our desired language fo r the OSD using [ U D ].
23 EN 3 Select “Manual T uning” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER]. 4 Select “Position” using [ U D ], then press [ P ]. 5 Select the position n umber you wan t to use using [the Number buttons] or [ U D ], then press [ L ]. • Y ou can select position number 01 to 99.
24 EN TV View Operation The follo wing operations are av ailable while vie wing TV channels through this unit’ s tuner . Selecting the TV Aspect Ratio Y ou can select the TV aspect ratio to match the format of the programme y ou are playing bac k with the unit and that of your TV screen (4:3 standard or 16:9 wide screen TV).
25 EN Setting the Clock Auto Clock Setting This unit receives time signals from the channels, and sets the clock automatically . Set the channel tuning before setting A uto Clock. 1 In stop mode, press [SETUP]. Select “General Setting” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER].
26 EN Information on DVD Recording Ty p e o f D i s c s This unit can record on D VD-R W/-R discs and D V D+RW/ +R discs . D VD-R/+R discs allo w you to record programmes only once, and the recorded contents can be erased although the space left on the disc does not change.
27 EN • Discs recorded in Video mode on this unit cannot record additional information using other D VD recorders. • Since recording is performed using the V ariable Bit Rate (VBR) method, the actual remaining time for recording may be a little shorter than the remaining time display ed on the OSD , depending on the picture you are recording.
28 EN Formatting a Disc Choosing the Record ing Format of a Blank DVD-RW Disc When inser ting a brand-new D VD-RW/+R W disc, the unit automatically star ts to initialise the disc.
29 EN Setting Aspect Ratio for V ideo Mode Recording Y ou can set aspect ratio for video mode recording. 1 In stop mode, press [SETUP]. Select “General Setting” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER]. 2 Select “Recor ding” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER].
30 EN Reformatting a Disc Manually If you are using a D VD-RW/+ R W disc, you can f or mat the disc by perf orming “Format”. Y ou can format D VD-R W disc f or either Video mode recordin g or VR mode recording. D VD+R W disc can be formatted in order to erase all content of the disc.
31 EN Setting Bilingual Recording Audio Y ou can select either “Main” or “Sub” audio to record a bilingual broadcast in Video mode or +VR mode. This setting is only for recording analogue channel. 1 In stop mode, press [SETUP]. Select “General Setting” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER].
32 EN Basic Recording F ollow the steps below to record a TV programme. (See page 81 for VCR recording.) 1 Press [ B ON ST ANDBY] to turn on the unit. T ur n on the TV and be sure to select the input to which the unit is connected. If you are record ing to th e HDD , press [HDD], then proceed to step 5 .
33 EN One-touch T imer Recording (OTR) This is a simple wa y to set the recording time in bloc ks of 30 minutes. Check that the disc y ou are recording onto has enough space remainin g f or the time you set. (See page 82 for VCR recording.) 1 Follo w steps 1 to 6 in “Basic Record ing” on page 32.
34 EN 5 Select the channel number to record using [ U D ], then pres s [ P ]. T o record fr om the e xter nal input, select “A V 1”, “A V2”, or “A V3”. 6 Select the reco r ding media ( “HDD” or “D VD”) using [ U D ], then press [ P ].
35 EN Skip the Periodical Timer Recording Y ou can deactivate the periodical (Daily, Mon-F ri or W eekly) timer recording temporarily . 1 In stop mode, press [TIM ER PR OG.]. 2 Select the periodical timer recor ding progra mme you want to skip using [ U D ], then press [ENTER].
36 EN Hints for the Timer Recording • If there is a power f ailure or the unit is unplugged f or more than 30 seconds, the clock setting and all timer settings will be lost. • If a disc is not inser ted or if an inser ted disc is not recordable (finalised D VD- R W/-R, finalised D VD+R, a fully recorded disc, etc.
37 EN Satellite Link Y ou can set the unit to star t recording whenev er it detects the video scar t control from the e xter nal tuner . Preparing for the Satellite Link Timer Recording: [Preparation of th e external tuner] • The external tuner should be equipped with some kind of timer function.
38 EN Settings for External Equipment Vi deo Colour System When you record from e xter nal equipment or cop y a videotape to a HDD/D VD disc , you can set the f ormat Auto, P AL or SECAM. 1 In stop mode, press [SETUP]. Select “General Setting” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER].
39 EN Information on DV Dubbing This function helps you to dub the contents in the D VC (digital video camcorder) to HDD, D VD or VCR easily . (See page 82 for “D VC to VCR Dubbing”.) Y ou can control basic operations of the D VC from the remote control of this unit if the D VC is in video mode.
40 EN DVC to HDD / DVD Dubbing Before recording from D VC, see page 21 f or connection instructions. (See page 82 for D VC to VCR Dubbing.) If you are dubbing to the HDD, press [HDD] first. If you are dubbing to a disc, press [DVD] fir st. 1 Select “D V” channel using [INPUT SELECT F ] or [PR OG.
41 EN Information on Dubbing Y ou can copy an HDD / D VD disc to a videota pe or copy a videotape to an HDD / D VD disc. This function will be possible only if the D VD or the videotape is not copy protected. Before dubbing, prepare f or the reco rding on the D VD- RW / -R disc, D VD+R W / +R disc or th e videotape.
42 EN Before Starting Dubbing Y ou can copy the contents between HDD and D VD . Limitation (DVD to HDD): • If a copy control signal is detected during dubbing, the dubbing will be stopped. Preparing for dubbing (HDD to DVD): • Inser t a recordable D VD .
43 EN One T ouch Dubbing fr om VCR to D VD If you are dubbing a title in the videotape, press [VCR] first. 1 Press [PLA Y B ] to star t the playback of the videot ape you want to dub. 2 Press [ST OP C ] or [P A USE F ] where y ou want to start dubbing.
44 EN 5 Select a desired title using [ U D L P ], then press [ENTER]. e.g.) HDD The title is now registered in the dubbing list. • For HDD and VR mode D V D-R W disc, press [DISC MENU] to switch between “Original” and “Playlist”. 6 Repeat steps 4 to 5 until y ou register all the titles to be dubbed.
45 EN 3 VCR A HDD Select “VCR A HDD” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER]. VCR A DV D Select “VCR A D VD” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER]. e.g. ) VC R A HDD 4 Select a desired recor ding mode using [ U D ], then press [EN TER]. e.g. ) VC R A HDD Confirmation message will appear .
46 EN 6 Repeat steps 4 to 5 until y ou register all the titles to be dubbed. e.g.) HDD A VCR T o delete a title: 1 Go to the dubbing list, then select a title using [ U D ] . Then press [ENTER] . 2 Select “Delete” using [ U D ] , then press [ENTER] .
47 EN Finalising Discs Y ou will need to finalise discs to play them back in other units. Finalising may tak e between sev eral minutes and an hour . A shor ter recording period on the disc will require a longer time period for finalisation. Do not unplug the mains cable during finalisation.
48 EN Basic Playback Hint for HDD / DVD Playback The contents of an HDD / D VD are generally divided into titles. Titles are some times further subdivided into chapters. Playing Back an HDD / DVD-RW / DVD-R / DVD+RW / DVD+R Disc 1 Press [ B ON ST ANDBY] to turn on the unit.
49 EN Playing Back an Audio CD, MP3 or JPEG 1 Follo w steps 1 to 4 in “Playing Back an HDD / DVD-R W / D VD-R / D VD+R W / D VD+R Disc” on pa ge 48. The “File List” will appear. T o exit the File List, press [TO P MENU] or press [ST OP C ] . T o resume the File List, press [T OP MENU] .
50 EN DivX ® Subtitle The subtitle created by the user can be display ed during DivX ® playback. 1 After the DivX ® file is selected, “Subtitle List” will appear . 2 Select the e xtension you want to displa y using [ U D ], then p ress [ENTER].
51 EN It is recommended that files t o be play ed back in this unit are recorded under the following specifications: [DivX ® ] • Official DivX ® Cer tified product Hint for the purchased or rental.
52 EN • If you insert a CD- R W/-R with DivX ® files that are mix ed with MP3 and JPEG files, the Pla yback Media Selection screen will be display ed. Please select “Video” and proceed to next step . •P r e s s [DISC MENU] to call up the Playbac k Media Selection screen in stop mode.
53 EN Playing Back a Disc Using the Title Menu Some D VDs ha ve a Title menu, which lists the titles av ailable on the D VD . Y ou can star t playing back such discs at a specific title. On this unit, if you fina lise video mode or +VR mode discs, a Title Menu will be created automatically .
54 EN Cancelling and Re calling the PBC Function Insert a Video CD. 1 In stop mode, press [SETUP]. 2 Select “CD Playback Mode” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER]. 3 Select “PBC (Vide o CD only)” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER]. 4 Select “OFF” using [ U D ], th en press [ENT ER].
55 EN Fast Forward / Fast Reverse 1 During playba ck, press [FWD D ] or [REV E ]. Each time you press [FWD D ] or [REV E ] , the approx imate speed will change as follo ws. F ast f orward or f ast rev erse play back across titles (for D VDs) or tracks / files (for Video CD / MP3 / DivX ® ) is not possible.
56 EN Step by Step Playback 1 During playba ck, press [P A USE F ]. 2 Press [SKIP H G ] repeated ly . Each time you press [SKIP G ] , pla yback will go forw ard one frame (or step) at a time with the sound muted. T o g o bac kward one frame (or step), press [SKIP H ] .
57 EN Marker Setup Y ou can assign a specific poi nt on a disc to retur n later . 1 During playba ck, press [DISPLA Y]. 2 Select the icon using [ L P ], then press [ENT ER] within 1 second, or wait f or 1 second to displa y the marker li st. e.g.) Marker setup men u for D VD-V ideo 3 Select the desired marker number using [ U D ].
58 EN Note • [TIME SLIP] is not a vailab le duri ng D VD record ings. • If you press [TIME SLI P] when the unit is in D VD mode, the output mode will automatically be switched to HDD , and the unit will sta rt chasing playbac k of the title being recorded.
59 EN T rack Search Using [SKIP H G ] butt ons 1 During pla yback, press [SKIP G ] to skip the c urrent trac k and mo ve to the next . The unit moves to the ne xt trac k one after another . T o g o bac k to the previous trac k, press [SKIP H ] twice in quick succession.
60 EN Repeat / Random / Programme Playback / Slide Show Repeat Playback F or audio CD or MP3, skip to step 2 . 1 During playba ck, press [DISPLA Y]. 2 Select the ic on using [ L P ], then press [ENT ER] within 1 second, or wait f or 1 second to displa y the selection men u.
61 EN 3 Select the desi red track using [ U D ], then press [ENTER] or [ P ]. 4 Press [PLA Y B ] to start programme playbac k. Hint • T o erase trac ks you selected, press [CLEAR] . • Y ou can make up to 50 track settings . • T o cancel programme pla yback, press [ST OP C ] twice during programme play back.
62 EN 2 Select the ic on using [ L P ], then press [ENT ER] within 1 second, or wait f or 1 second to displa y the selection men u. 3 Select a desired audio soundtr ack or audio channel u sing [ U D ], then press [ENT ER]. With a D VD-Video , VR mode D VD-R W , or DivX ® files: Audio soundtr ack will s witch.
63 EN Guide to a Title List Title list allows you to chec k the titles recorded on the disc easily . Y ou can choose a title to play bac k from this list and easily edit t he titles as you pref er . Press [HDD] o r [D VD], then pres s [T OP MENU]. 1 Title name.
64 EN Playlist: Playlist is the cop y of the Original. Y ou can edit the titles in the Playlist as y ou like without aff ecting the original data in the Original. It leav es the or iginal to act as a backup . Deleting a Playlist does not delete the corresponding Original.
65 EN Deleting Selected T itles Y ou can delete titles which you do not need anymore . Please be advised that the titles once deleted cannot be brought back. 1 Press [HDD], then press [T OP MENU]. 2 Select the title you want to dele te using [ U D L P ], then press [ENTER].
66 EN 5 T o enter the title name, refer to “Guide to Editing Title Names” on this page . When you finish entering the title name, press [ENTER] . 6 Select “Y es” using [ U D ], then press [ENT ER]. The name you edited becomes the title. 7 Press [RETURN] and then [RETURN] or [ST OP C ] to e xit.
67 EN 6 Press [RETURN]. 7 Press [RETURN] again and then [RETURN] or [ST OP C ] to exit. F or D VD , the data will be written onto the disc momentarily .
68 EN 4 Select “Hidden” us ing [ U D ], then press [ENT ER]. 5 Press [RETURN]. 6 Press [RETURN] again and then [RETURN] or [ST OP C ] to exit. Writing onto the disc star ts. It may tak e awhile to write the data on a disc. If you want hidden chapters to be “Visible”, select the chapter to be shown.
69 EN e.g.) VR mode D VD-RW disc Playlist The title is divided into two new titles with the same title names. 5 Press [RETURN] or [ST OP C ] to exit. F or D VD , writing onto the disc star ts.
70 EN Deleting All Playlists All Playlists can be delet ed if they are no longer needed. 1 Press [SETUP]. 2 Select “D VD Menu” (for D VD) or “HDD Menu” (f or HDD) using [ U D ], then press [ENTER]. 3 Select “Dele te All Playlists” using [ U D ], then press [ENTER].
71 EN The cursor will move to “Pre view”. The bar at the bottom of the screen indicates t he total and the elapsed time of the title, and the area selected for deletion is indicated in red. Y ou can check the pre view by pressing [ENTER ] . • Before and after 5 seconds of the deleted point will be playback f or pre view .

75 EN Set to “ON” to make the dynamic range narro wer . Select a setting using [ U D ], then press [ENT ER]. Y our setting is activated. “Dynamic Range Control” function is effectiv e only with analogue audio connection. Note • “Dynamic Range Control” fu nction is availab le only on discs recorded in the Dolby Digital f ormat.
76 EN 5. Subtitle Language (Default: OFF) (DVD only) Set “Subtitle Language”. Select a setting using [ U D ], then press [ENT ER]. Y our setting is activated. If “Other” is selecte d, enter the appro priate 4-digit code using [the Number b uttons].

80 EN 3. RGB Range (Default: Normal) Y ou can adjust the RGB range to make the dark areas of the HDMI images brighter. Select a setting using [ U D ], then press [ENT ER]. • Select “Enhanced” if the black-white contrast is not clear . • This setting is effectiv e only for HDMI RGB output.
81 EN Playback 1 Press [ B ON ST ANDBY] to turn on the unit. T o play back a tape, turn on the TV and be sure to select the input to which the unit is connected. 2 Press [VCR]. 3 Insert a pre-recor ded tape, then press [PLA Y B ] to begin pla ybac k.
82 EN Accidental e rasure prevention T o prev ent accidental recording on a recorded cassette, remov e its record tab. T o record on it later, cov er the hole with cellop hane tape. One-touch Timer Recording This feature allo ws you to set the recording length simply by pressing [REC I ] .
83 EN Time Search This feature allo ws you to go to a specific point on a tape by entering the exact amount of time y ou want to skip in order to reach the point. 1 Press [VCR]. 2 Press [SEARCH] repeat edly until the time sear ch menu ap pears. 3 Enter y our desired time to skip using [the Number b uttons] within 30 seconds.
84 EN T roubleshooting Before requesting service for this unit, chec k the tabl e below f or a possible cause of the problem you are ex per iencing. Some simple checks or a minor adjust ment on y our par t may eliminate the prob lem and restore proper operation.
85 EN Symptom Remedy CHANNEL TV channels cannot be change d. • Check if the connections are made securely and correctly . • Check if the cab les are damaged. • T r y “Chan nel” setting by f ollowing the steps on pages 22-23. Only specific channels do no t appear .
86 EN P LA YBAC K HDD/D VD Pla yback does not start from the beginning. • Resume func tion may be activ ated. Ref er to page 54 to cancel the resume point. HDD HDD playback suddenly stops. • When D VD recording finishes during HDD pla yback, the un it will stop the HDD playba ck, and start wr iting data to the D VD .
87 EN Error message Cause Solution Disc Error — Please eject the disc. — Pla yback f eature may not be av ailable on this disc. • An unpla yab le disc is inserted in the unit. • The disc is upside down. • Insert a standard disc. (See pages 9-10.
88 EN * If you are still having trouble with the unit after checki ng all the T roubleshooting points, write down the error code and the error descr iption and consult your dealer or an authorised ser vice centre. Recording Error The disc has no recording compatibility .
