Introduction 7 Structure of disc contents Normally , D VD video discs are divided into titles, and the titles are sub-divided into chapters. Video CDs and Audio CDs are divided into tracks.
8 Introduction DIGITAL VIDEO Playable discs This unit can play the following discs. •Y ou cannot pla y discs other than those listed above. •Y ou cannot pla y discs of D VD-RAM, D VD-ROM, Photo CD, etc., or non standardized discs even if they may be labeled as above.

12 Introduction 12 3 • Aim the remote control at the remote sensor and press control buttons to operate. • Operate the remote control within 30 ° angle on either side of the remote sensor , up to a distance of appro x. 5 meters. Replace the compartment cov er .

14 Connections For basic cable service not requiring a converter/descrambler box, connect the cable TV 75 ohm coaxial cable directly to the Antenna jack on the back of the unit.
15 Connections Press the INPUT to select the “LINE” (external input) to use the TV as a monitor. Operate your VCR as usual. To playback from the camcorder, connect the camcorder to the unit as shown. You can enjoy playing a TV game on the screen by adjusting to suitable brightness for your eyes.

17 Connections MPEG2 sound Y ou can enjo y motion picture and live concer t D VD video discs encoded via the MPEG2 recording system with dynamic realistic sound by connecting an amplifier equipped with an MPEG2 audio decoder or MPEG2 audio processor .
18 Starting setup The STARTING SETUP function makes installing your unit easily. It leads you the Language selection, TV/CABLE selection and auto channel memory automatically. IMPORTANT: Make sure that the antenna or cable TV system connection is made! Starting setup Press or to select “TV” or “CABLE”, then press ENTER.
19 Notes: • If the unit does not operate properl y , or No key operation (by the unit and/or the remote contr ol): Static electricity , etc., may aff ect the play er's operation. Disconnect the AC power cord once, then connect it again. • The TV section has its own menu and also D VD section has its own menu .
20 TV operation TV operation Adjust the volume level by pressing VOL + or –. The volume level will be indicated on the screen by green bars. As the volume level increases, so do the number of bars. If the volume decreases, the number of green bars also decreases.
21 TV operation ■ CHANNEL UP/DOWN Press and release CH or . The channel automati- cally stops at the next channel set into memory . For proper operation, before selecting channels, they should be set into the memor y . See page 23 “T o memorize channels”.
22 TV operation Closed captions Captions: This closed caption mode will display te xt on the screen in English or another language (depending on the setting of the closed captions CH 1/2). Generally , closed captions in English are transmitted on captions channel 1 and closed captions in other languages are transmitted on captions channel 2.

27 TV operation Stereo and Second A udio Program (SAP) The unit is equipped with a feature known as multi-channel TV sound or MTS. MTS broadcasts greatly enhance TV viewing by bringing you programs with high fidelity stereo sound.
28 Basic playback Press OPEN/CLOSE or PLA Y . The disc tra y closes automatically . On the TV -screen, “ ” changes to “Reading” and then playbac k commences. Press ST OP to end playbac k. 3 Resuming facility • The unit records the stopped point, depending on the disc.
29 Basic playback To pause playback (still mode) Press PA USE during playbac k. To resume nor mal playbac k, press PLA Y . • The sound is muted during still mode. To stop playback Press ST OP . To remove the disc Press OPEN/CLOSE . Remove the disc after the disc tray opens completely .
30 Basic playback Playing frame by frame Playing in fast reverse or fast forward directions Press REV or FF during playbac k. REV :F ast rev erse playbac k FF :F ast f orward playbac k Each time you press REV or FF , the playback speed changes. To resume normal playback Press PLA Y .
31 Advanced playback Press / / / to view a different part of the frame. You may move the frame from the center position to UP, DOWN, LEFT or RIGHT direction. In the zoom mode press ZOOM repeatedly to return to a 1:1 view ( Off). Press JUMP during playback or stop mode.
32 Adv anced playback Marking the scenes Returning to the scenes 1 Press MARKER during playback or stop mode. 2 1 3 Marking desired scenes The unit stores the points that you want to watch again up to 3 points. You can resume playback from each scene.
33 Advanced playback [Audio CD, Video CD] Press D D D D D to select “Repeat”. Press B B B B B / A A A A A to select “Track” or “All”. The unit automatically starts repeat playback after finishing the current track. • If you set the repeat mode during stop mode, press PLA Y to star t Repeat pla yback.
34 Advanced playback Program playback/Random playbac k You can arrange the playback order of tracks on the disc. And also the unit selects tracks at random and playback them. These feature works for Audio CD and Video CD. ENTER ▲ / ▼ / / PLA Y MODE 0–9 CANCEL Program playback VCD CD Press PLAY MODE in the stop mode.
35 Advanced playback Changing angles ANGLE ENTER ▲ / ▼ / / T OP MENU PLA Y DVD MENU Title selection DVD menu Press ANGLE during playback. The current angle will appear. When playing back a disc recorded with multi-angle facility, you can change the angle that you are viewing the scene from.
36 Advanced playback 1 2 Press AUDIO SELECT during playback. The current soundtrack language will appear. Press A UDIO SELECT repeatedly until the desired language is selected. • The on screen display will disappear after a few seconds. Changing soundtrack language/ Subtitles You can select the language when you play a multilin- gual disc.
37 Advanced playback Disc status/T o turn off the PBC 1 DISPLA Y ENTER With each press of DISPLA Y , the status of the disc will appear on the screen and change as follows. DVD To make status display disappear , press DISPLA Y again. Video CD When you playback the CD disc, the status display will appear on the screen and continue displaying.
38 Function setup Setting procedure Press SETUP during stop mode. The following on-screen display appears. 1 2 3 To make SETUP screen disappear , press SETUP or RETURN. 5 Customizing the function settings You can change the default settings to customize performance to your preference.
39 Function setup Details To select the language of “Men u”, “Subtitle” and “Audio” if more than one language are recorded on the disc. To select a preferred language for on screen display. To select a picture size according to the aspect r atio of your TV .
40 Function setup Menu, Subtitle, Audio You can select the language of “Menu”, “Subtitle” and “Audio” if more than one languages are recorded onto the disc. English, Francais, Espanol: The selected language will be heard or seen. Other: Other language can be selected (see the “Language code list” on page 44).
41 Function setup Picture Mode There are two types of source content in pictures re- corded in DVD video discs: film content (pictures re- corded from films at 24 frames per second) and video content (video signals recorded at 30 frames per sec- ond).
42 Function setup Parental control setting Some discs are specified not suitable for children. Such discs can be limited not to play back with the unit. 1) Press C or D to select “Parental”, then press B or A until the le vel you require appears. • Le vel Off: The parental control setting does not function.
43 Function setup Load a DVD disc and press PLAY or OPEN/ CLOSE on the unit 28 . If the DVD disc has been designed to temporarily cancel the Rating level, the screen which follows the “Reading” screen will change, depending on which disc is played.

45 Others SYMPTOMS POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS • Make sure the power cord is plugged in. • Try another AC outlet. • Power is off, check fuse or circuit breaker. • Unplug unit, then plug it back in. Poor reception on some channels. Horizontal or diagonal bars on screen.
46 Others Pla yback does not star t when the title is selected. • Check the Parental setup. A udio soundtrack and/or subtitle language is not changed when you play back a DVD. • Multilingual language is not recorded on the DVD disc. No subtitle. • Some discs have no subtitles.
47 Others Most types of television interference can be remedied by adjusting the height and position of the VHF/UHF antenna. Outdoor antennas are recommended for best results.
